1. Completely agree, it's quite bizarre... although I hasten to add I think it's very much the instrument not the playerwith me! First time I took one down to the local Open Mic I suddenly had loads of people I'd seen month in month out suddenly come up and talk to me. I was inexplicably promoted to "one of those clever b**tards that can play anything" (my previous performances on other instruments hadn't warranted such an observation) and I suddenly find that despite playing similar lines the perception of the bass player goes from "crap guitarist" to "musician". FYI it also seems to work for mandolin, although in a slightly less dramatic way Around here everybody also seems to default to a Carry On Film status and remark on it's size too
2. I've always said those Jags will be future classics, like the JV series in a few years. Ultimately if it's not happening for you, it's not happening. But I do agree don't rush a decision.
3. Sometimes if the string is cut too short you can get a rattle. If you rewind between the nut & peg so there is more of an angle it can sound better. I had the same problem this week with my A string
4. 2x instrument cables 2x speaker cables 2x vintage guitar straps Kettle lead Folding Hercules Guitar stand Spare Capo (not for me, for the boys - there's always one!) Spare Strings (never use them) Electronic tuner Blank Postcards with chord patterns written on them Jim Beam bar towel
5. It does look good. Reminds me of 70s Glam
6. I'm still concerned some folk thought my avatar was John Peel!?! I can't say it bothers me massively what people use & the images mentioned aren't pornographic or offensive. An avatar is a personal choice & something that reflects you. If the thing you want to say with yours is "I like this girl", so be it. Perhaps it isn't the most inspired choice? I can try to intellectualise why I've used mine but ultimately it's just a picture of a bass playing hero / influence. It's your choice to go on a site when you should be working (I occasionally do it too so just an observation, not a criticism) so equally it should be a question of choice for which avatar an individual selects.
7. Bumping for Newbury's gig Saturday 18th at the Lock, Stock & Barrel
8. Welcome to Basschat
9. And now withdrawn. Sold elsewhere possibly?
10. Yes you can. It might be worth having a look at some other brands too but yes a Fender replacement will be fine
11. Welcome to Basschat Ed, looks like you joined a while back but held back on posting?
12. EBay always has a few. I picked up a black original 62RI Fender one recently
13. Our band use a lot of rods & brushes. Failing that you just bang them on the nose with a spoon. They soon get the idea
14. I think they are a great band in general. I didn't realise they were over
15. The band I'm in at the moment seem to pretty much hate covers. We jammed some great versions of a couple of tunes by The Eagles in rehearsal early on & I got dagger looks when I suggested we might do one live. It wasn't even Hotel California. As far as I am concerned anything is fair game, it just depends how it is done etc
16. This has come up before... I guess he won't be living that one down for a while yet
17. I'm pleased we've had some really common sense answers here. Ultimately it comes down to tastes and without being a visionary, who's to say what will be collectable in the future. The Japanese Fenders were panned in the early days and nowadays the JV Series are highly regarded. A lot of rubbish *can* be spoken about musical equipment (often by people who haven't actually played what they are slatting) and it's pleasing that this thread hasn't (yet) descended into the can of worms predicted.
18. I've done hundreds of gigs over 20yrs+ and definitely gone through a lot of the sentiment of the OP. However lately we're getting a lot of decent gigs so it keeps things really fresh. I agree take the rough with the smooth. Also we play a lot of different places so I like the fact I show up in anywhere from Reading to Manchester to London to Newport. It it stops being fun I would stop doing it. Simple as. I've probably enjoyed playing live more now as I'm older than I did when I was younger and that is quite something
19. I'm currently stripping a late 70s body (pic attached) & mods were very common back then. I'm mildly annoyed as the seller didn't mention this had been modded & I passed over a cheaper body because it had also been modded. I like the colour of yours but I think you'll struggle to put a year to it
20. I was never a fan of MIM standards but the 2009 ones I've played Fender appear to have seriously raised their game. I played a MIM Jazz next to a USA Jazz and whilst the USA was better, it wasn't £300 better in my opinion. Certainly if I was starting out now (assuming I had an income) I'd go for a MIM bass.
21. I've done hundreds of gigs since starting playing over 20yrs ago & I find it very easy onstage. I think performing is a craft like playing and it's something that gets easier with practice. It helps to play in bands you like & not worry about who looks cool or plays best. For many of us music is primarily about enjoyment
22. I wouldn't normally post this on here but as Beedster's Bruce Palmer 4 E strings thread was so popular I figured it may interest some of you http://www.rickrosas.com/Rick_Rosas/News/News.html I'd love to see it
