  1. I clicked on this thread thinking "with my username this'll be the thread for me" and now I am worried that people will look at that bass and think of my username! 😸
  2. I never liked any of the classic Grunge or Thrash albums. I guess I was never that much of a heavy rocker. Equally there were a fair few indie bands that got raved about that just weren't for me. For an avid consumer of music, there seems to be a lot that passed me by. With the internet it's easier to avoid the things you don't like. Growing up, there was no escaping the bands I didn't care for as they'd be all over the music press and TV shows like The Chart Show and Raw Power.
  3. Yep. It's amazing how many celebrities follow a plant based diet. Certainly with older professional musicians it seems increasingly popular. Interesting that the perception of veganism is typically the reactionary student who thinks everyone is entitled to their opinion when the reality I have seen is the vast majority just getting on with it and not being particularly in anyone's face about it. I guess this is why all the fast food companies that were traditionally the enemy of veganism are now having a vegan line.
  4. Um, Meat Loaf announces he no longer eats meat and is going vegan for Veganuary (inews.co.uk) Sorry links don't seem to work on this computer but feel free to google it.
  5. I'm okay with this. A bit like a religious band wanting you to be religious. It's niche but I suspect they know that.
  6. I had an Orange 2x10 for a number of years and did some punk shows on it. I now have the same cab but 2x12 for pub / small club shows. I appreciate that some will say you need to have this, that and the other for certain things but at the risk of making all bass forums redundant, ultimately you can play most styles on most kit. Worst case scenario you wind up adding a second cab or looking at pedals but generally I always got favourable comments from the small rig. Kit has come a LONG way in recent years but people are still using the same arguments from decades ago.
  7. Best not hold your breathe.... he's vegan! 😸
  8. 32yrs ago was my debut live show. Time flies!

      Time flies indeed.

It's 41 years ago, that I played my first live gig, at my school's 'Rock Nite'.

I remember it because it was the day of John Lennon's death.

      Was that with Andy, Tim?

      Nah @Lozz196, I wasn't to meet Andy until 5yrs later in 1994.

  9. I've noticed that since the first lockdown more venues seem to be doing this, or variations on this. I'm still waiting payment from August for one show. Generally people pay up but it's a major faff.
  10. Out; I think just one cab but I have been mega lazy not listing a couple of things. In; A bouzouki A 70s Ozark 4 string banjo A pedal board with 5 Electro Harmonix pedals on it A Sterling musicman bass in black / maple a Steinberger style bass
  11. I'm the other way around, I had a Jazz bass with a P neck for years which I loved. I thought the 70s RI P-basses had slimmer necks. I know the 57RI ones tend to be wider and the 51RI tend to be chunkier.
  12. In pro studios I just use the Sansamp VT bass pedal which I thought was the answer to everything studio-wise. I've gotten better results from that pedal than countless different amp / cab setups with various mic placements. However, I recently got asked to play on a friend's album and was set up with a laptop and Reaper. It's the first time I engineered myself and I wound up just plugging a p-bass in direct to a cheap DI box. Having practiced like mad throughout lockdown, I feel my technique has improved massively and I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I really do think that regular practice coupled with knowing the piece you are recorded really is 95% of the battle.
  13. I think generally just everything has gotten so much better these days. Growing up in an era of rubbish budget instruments and cheap practice amps, I am constantly amazed by how good most entry level stuff is these days. Maybe we understand a good setup better these days but I think it's hard to buy out and out rubbish now. Apps have been mentioned but you look at the online lessons and availability of tabs (okay, I'm sure someone will point out they are often wrong) but generally it's all a lot easier now. And making music should be accessible.
  14. I have a uke bass but there are plenty of better lightweight options, if that were to be a problem for you. I guess the issue is more lugging an amp too? The Hofner Beatle bass is very light, short scale and easy to play. The amp side of things could be offset with a amp simulator pedal... unless you are set on the keyboard route. Best of luck resolving this.
  15. For Xmas 2019 and my birthday in early March 2020 (pre-first lockdown), my wife bought me tickets for concerts. Neither of those shows have taken place yet. We toured in November 2021 and we had a definite hit on ticket sales but I would say at least 90% of those who bought tickets came.
  16. I can only echo the comments made about generally sounding like me. To prove a point a few years back, I downgraded my rig and went back to owning just 2 Squiers. I toured and recorded with those basses - they played the O2 in London with me and were on the BBC. Then I decided that it's nice to have nice things. I now own 4 American basses and a lot of kit again now. Why? Simply because life is too short. Does it make me sound better? No, not really. The 1hr a day practice I have been doing since the pandemic started does though. We make our own choices, finances allowing.
  17. I went from Ampeg to Orange and have never looked back. I have the back breaking AD200B head but also an Orange Terror head for smaller gigs. The Mk2 doesn't suffer the early breakup of the originals and I absolutely love the tone. Not for everyone but what it does do, it does very well indeed.
  18. just got tickets for The Cure at Wembley 2022! Get in!

  19. Old school gear? Check! That no one wants? Don't know... never considered selling it!
  20. I'm another "embrace the space" fan. It amplifies mistakes so you need to be as rehearsed as you can be (there are less places to hide). I used to fear it but now I welcome it. Pedals are nice but the fix doesn't have to have a financial answer. Look at building confidence in your playing and just have fun with it.
  21. My 80s alternative / Goth duo played the local open mic. Set 1 is us doing Cure / Sisters of Mercy etc on folk instruments (mandolin, bouzouki, mandocello) and then onto the electric set with our drum machine / keyboard programming. We wound up doing a third set completely acoustically in the bar afterwards. Busy day at work and when the night ends with the landlord wavering drink charges, I am reminded that I am not 22 these days!
  22. The voice of experience speaks? Yes, it is indeed. @Paul S, just a very cool night called What's Cookin'. I have played it a few times over the years and it is always great fun. @KK Jale, I saw a Laney combo on the side but I'd brought my smaller Orange rig. If whoever speaks with Steve queries it, I am sure if it works he'd be cool for you to use it. Everyone else will need their own backline. The band can move the cones and park right outside for free.
  23. Just to confirm, @Reggaebass is correct about sales threads needing approval when initially being posted. We usually approve them almost straight away, just so long as there is a mod online or spots it.
  24. Could have been deleted. I saw you commented on a thread that we pulled recently for rule breaches. No issue with your post but the thread was reported and quite rightly pulled. That'll almost certainly be the issue, rather than your iPad.
