1. Bump for tonight - I'll be staying sober as I'm on the upright!
2. A lot of this comes down to rock showmanship compromising your playing though, right? I wouldn't know Pete Wentz if he passed me in the street & couldn't name one of his songs but bands like his are often about an image (& I don't necessarily just mean how they look). I wouldn't expect him to release a tuition DVD called "Advanced Harmonics on Unusual Frets". Fair play to him. He has his own sig bass too (nobody mention Avril!) A few challenges to some of the bassists under fire here. I worked with a bass playing producer back in the 90s who raved about the U2 bassist. I'm not a fan of the band personally but would they have been as popular with a different player? He does what he does & it works. Gene Simmons (& that YouTube video seriously undermines my argument but then I've never tried soloing in S&M gear with a dead cat on my head) is actually responsible for some very tasteful playing on a few tracks on the early 70s records - closet Kiss fan so I know they were ones he played on. Also Bill Wyman, please see the U2 argument. Oh & Paul Simomon may have been learning on the first record but boy did he get there? His influence answers so many critics. Sid Vicious, see the Pete Wentz argument. If you want awful bass playing, come & watch me on my upright after the 3 pint mark!
3. Reminds me of Jack white in the recent guitar film
4.
I still don't understand why bass strings are so expensive though, I can't imagine the extra metal and time used to create them equates to the massive price differences from normal guitar strings.
It's also because bass players change strings far less frequently (I aim for never!) compared to some lead players that change for every gig
5. Well they sent an automated acknowledgment to my email & unlike previous times haven't responded. They have however, as of today, delierved a damn fine flight case. I'll cut my losses - good product, poor service.
6. I can't help but feel this thread may end in tears I admire most people that get up & play live. Or even with other people.
7. Plenty show up on EBay, I recently got a black 70s USA Fender P body for just shy of £200. I hasten to add I stripped it with nitro mors but there are bargains to be had
8. I have a cheapy upright & to contradict what I am sure would be the sensible advice on this forum, I reckon it'd suit getting you started. Mine was about £500 & it sounds great but the finish is terrible so the slightest knock will show - & does! I'd go for it, you can always sell it on
9. Looks great, although I do think the Fender RI is one of the finer examples of their range - rumoured to be discontinued though so the timing could be perfect.
10. A lot of the parts you want regularly crop up on EBay. Occasionally a bit overpriced but you should find everything you need there. There are also unfinished bodies which you could buy & take to somewhere like SIMS to get finished in shell pink. Good luck with it
11. I think the one thing I've learn't on BC is we all, quite rightly, have very different tastes. Granted all those things have had rave reviews from different members but so have a fair few other bits of kit. In reality the ultimate BC Bass would be like Doctor Who & change into something else periodically to allow for a typical members GAS!
12. This thread is interesting & certainly reveals my unschooled technique. I use my third finger supported by the first two a bit & have been having a few issues around intonation. Admittedly more when I let my practice slip but I will try adapting what has been said here. Cheers
13. Ah, ok - it was the 90s when I first remember hearing of them as they got raved about in Bassist magazine. You learn something everyday.
14. Purely out of interest did it fit the original Badass bridges in the 90s?
15. I'm stunned (but in a good way) by these amounts. I did one NYE gig back in the mid 90s & I don't recall getting much of anything. We're not really a party band though
16. There are brands of bass that aren't to my tastes but I prefer to not comment rather than point out that I'm not a fan of certain gear. It's just negative. For the record I think Fender's gear just looks classic & timeless
17. I was playing in 3 bands last year & now I'm down to one. I've had the reverse & have an anti GAS - I've settled into my kit & have been steadily getting rid of stuff, happily so. There are one or two things I'm vaguely interested in but I'm in no hurry & these will be trades if I do acquire them. I'm much happier now focussing on what I've got. I think GAS is a phase a lot of us go through. It's fun but nice when it passes
18. I have string through on 3 of my 5. I prefer it but the difference is minimal & I'm certainly not put off it a bass doesn't have it
19. Chris - I'm happy to give them benefit of the doubt re the email, it's no doubt an automated system & accidents happen. The price hike was cheeky. None of it is terrible but when you put it all together it doesn't paint a good picture. Nobody seems to answer the phones but I have queried the £10 via email so watch this space. Either they sort this out today or I'll go for a refund... in which case Phil, I'll be in touch.
20. I played with him last year & he was a nice guy too. He's come up a few times on these pages
21. Anyone used the Flight Case Company? http://www.theflightcasecompany.com/ I contacted them late last month about getting a case for my Fender Bassman head. They had one on offer & they replied immediately to say they would be holding their prices for the next 10 days. So I paid via Paypal & ordered on 31st, well within the ten days. Listed as in stock, ready for despatch. Not in a massive hurry although obviously it's nice to get things fairly swiftly. Thursday evening I logged into my account to discover my order was "awaiting payment". I wasn't too impressed with that so I contacted them quoting my paypal transaction number and querying the order. They'd left it for 5 days. To their credit the status was quickly amended to "awaiting forfillment" and I had a reply to say they never got the standard email from Paypal (a bit suspicious about that one but at least it's been amended). I was told I'd probably be looking at the first half of next week. I see today my status remains unchanged and I have also noticed they had actually put the price up by £10 - I thought it didn't look right - which went against what I was promised. Very sneaky. It's not been 2wks yet but for a custom order that was in stock and ready to go I have to say they are not impressing me too much so far. Any thoughts or experiences? Should I query the £10 price hike. That does seem a bit naughty.
