1. Welcome to Basschat
2. Thanks for the replies - Gareth, how did you rate the MXR pedal you just sold?
3.
Where did you get your Eastwood from? It's pretty much what I want...don't suppose you would like to sell that to a poor student, gv'nor?
I can't answer that obviously but this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Eastwood-Classic...99000?pt=Guitar plus import tax still looks like a good deal. I'm put off by the 30.5" scale personally or I'd snap this up
4. I'm fairly new to upright & we occasionally play acoustic gigs where I get to use it. I play country / bluegrass type stuff. At the bigger Art Centre gigs & the local acoustic night I have no problems sound wise but last night I again faced the inexperienced soundman's look of blind panic. I have a shadow pickup in the bridge & usually go through the PA. It sounds great. However with a less confident soundman I can get feedback & struggle to hear myself. My guitarist suggested I get myself a D.I. box and this seems a good idea. Would this be good idea & if so I wonder what the more experienced upright players would recommend? Also what tips can I give an inexperienced soundman to help get a good sound?
5. Played an acoustic gig (so upright bass) in Reading last night. Usual rock venue so the soundman initially struggled with the less conventional instruments & the onstage sound was at best shocking BUT we went for it & watching friends videos after we were surprisingly good.
6. I quite like the song too  I'm not proud
7. As a very small boy I remember wearing out my parents old vinyl records - 60s rock, country & soul. When I hit my teens I was into Glam & punk but as I started to get bored of the newer bands coming through I began to trace the influences of the bands I'd discovered... guess what? I wound up going full circle!
8.
Thanks all. Maybe we'll bump into one another Burrito, have played in the Reading/Berks area a bit myself.
We play all over but it's always good to meet a fellow basschatter So you never know......
9. My friend runs the local music shop & he swears by Crafter. He's actually their 3rd biggest stockist in the UK. I've played most of his stock & they are great. Sounds like you got a good deal
10. I have a fairly high action but tend to play around the bottom end. A good set up makes a world of difference & I found Powerball really helped my stamina
11.
i bought a bridge with the adjusters on ebay from China for £21
My bridge was a similar EBay deal. I must be very naive, I really thought that was standard
12. Very nice
13. I used to own a bass identical to that in the mid 90s - the pickups were rubbish and I had different volumes on different strings. A small part of me wonders if it's my old bass but "fixed". That would be spooky.
14.
Has anyone seen Andy Lewis who has been playing with Paul Weller for the past couple of years. I had seen Weller in the past with Damon Minchella who was fantastic. Lately I've seen him twice with Andy Lewis and came away disappointed both times. I really dont enjoy his style and I just dont think he has any feel or groove. And to top it off his tone was shocking! So he gets my vote as an awful bassist.
Purely as a point of interest, I used to know him when I lived in Watford and he produced a session my band did about 10yrs ago. It's funny seeing him play the basses on TV that I used on the session at the time (I used his gear). He also made me play with a pick whereas I use my fingers normally. He's a good musician actually, maybe just not to your tastes as you say. Minchella is a very tasteful player
15. A bit steep on the p&p mind
16. Welcome to Basschat Andy
17. Welcome to Basschat
18.
It was very much like that. But with a bit more swearing.
You gotta play it live now!
19. Bump for tonight - I'll be staying sober as I'm on the upright!
20. The fluffy one is a bit, um, fluffy!?
21. A lot of this comes down to rock showmanship compromising your playing though, right? I wouldn't know Pete Wentz if he passed me in the street & couldn't name one of his songs but bands like his are often about an image (& I don't necessarily just mean how they look). I wouldn't expect him to release a tuition DVD called "Advanced Harmonics on Unusual Frets". Fair play to him. He has his own sig bass too (nobody mention Avril!) A few challenges to some of the bassists under fire here. I worked with a bass playing producer back in the 90s who raved about the U2 bassist. I'm not a fan of the band personally but would they have been as popular with a different player? He does what he does & it works. Gene Simmons (& that YouTube video seriously undermines my argument but then I've never tried soloing in S&M gear with a dead cat on my head) is actually responsible for some very tasteful playing on a few tracks on the early 70s records - closet Kiss fan so I know they were ones he played on. Also Bill Wyman, please see the U2 argument. Oh & Paul Simomon may have been learning on the first record but boy did he get there? His influence answers so many critics. Sid Vicious, see the Pete Wentz argument. If you want awful bass playing, come & watch me on my upright after the 3 pint mark!
22. Reminds me of Jack white in the recent guitar film
23.
I still don't understand why bass strings are so expensive though, I can't imagine the extra metal and time used to create them equates to the massive price differences from normal guitar strings.
It's also because bass players change strings far less frequently (I aim for never!) compared to some lead players that change for every gig
24. Well they sent an automated acknowledgment to my email & unlike previous times haven't responded. They have however, as of today, delierved a damn fine flight case. I'll cut my losses - good product, poor service.
