1. Welcome to Basschat
2. Welcome to Basschat. Hondo Precisions, I remember them!
3. You'll find a fair selection at Tin Pan Alley in London (a street full of music shops) BUT I wouldn't buy from them - too expensive and rude service. Dawsons in Reading has a reasonable selection - it depends how many you want to try. If you are new to bass I'd always advise playing what you buy as opposed to buying online.
4. One ding is a disaster, two dings annoying, once you get past three - it's mojo!
5. My Ampeg SVT 115E cab is ex-Wurzels, I was reliably informed.
6. I have 5 Precisions which I'm only now stating to think is a bit much. If you like them & play them it's no problem
7. I got a tuition DVD on EBay to help me, nust called something like Double Bass for Beginners.
8. Grammer aside, jolly decent to "throw in a stand and a strap to compliant it". That would really compliant it?!
9. WOW!!!!! Totally up my street. Good effort
10. I still miss Bassist
11. Welcome to Basschat. Owning an instrument is always a personal thing so ultimately you'll know when you play the right bass for you. The current Fender range is great & would certainly suit your genre / budget but ultimately you won't know until you plug in. Happy hunting
12. Quite an introduction! Welcome to Basschat
13. I've sold a few bass things at really reasonable prices and lately I've been amazed at how many people who will undercut the price to about 40% and email to say I'll give you £50 for an item listed at £130. Years ago stuff used to just go but about half my stuff is now a relist. It sells still though and at my price I originally specified. I don't mind people trying to knock a couple of quid off the price (I say no 99% of the time) but some people just take liberties
14. At a standard gig it's just a Precision but at the bigger gigs I'll take my upright too. Or if it's acoustic just the upright
15. He's great on the Lou Reed video when he explains why he double tracked his bass (to get two fees). So unassuming. He always comes across as a top bloke
16.
So do i have to get stock japanese tuners or are there replecement, gotoh/grover/wilkinson etc?
I've got 70s Fender USA tuners in my 1989 MIJ Precision neck if that helps? It all seems pretty standard & it sounds like you got a bargain
17. It's whatever you want to pay for it. There are sellers that break these things up on EBay and sell them for £200 plus - if you are happy with that then fine. I've picked up Fender necks for £100 before but you have to really search EBay and strike early. What's the figure you've been quoted? In terms of fakes, pretty much what Steve said really. If it's a nice neck, it'll feel good. If you have any doubts and are not sure, just walk away.
18. Always the Bridesmaid
19. Respect, innit!
20. It looks great. I stripped a P-bass earlier this summer & that was a fair old job... I can only imagine what this was like!
21. Arrived today (Tuesday). Very pleased with it. Cool layout & well researched. Thumbs up from me
22. Bear in mind you've been listening to professional players with a bigger budget than you, it's still easily done though. I played rock in a band years ago with a Peavey combo & a Fender. The Sansamp Bass Driver would be good & heavier strings do thicken up the low end. It's also a question of listening to what other players do - it doesn't have to just be 16ths & you can create light and dark by not playing
put Rotosound roundwound heavies (50 - 100) on it
Is this a typo? That's a standard gauge at the heavy end... I'm playing alt.folk based stuff with 55-110!
23. Welcome to Basschat Jamie
24.
Class! According to wikipedia: "Shearer provides voices for Mr. Burns, Waylon Smithers, Ned Flanders, Reverend Timothy Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Dr. Julius Hibbert, Lenny Leonard, Principal Skinner, Otto Mann, Rainier Wolfcastle, Dr. Marvin Monroe and many others"
Beat me to it Rich! I was struggling to remember the name A Mighty Wind whilst you posted so didn't see you chip in there
25. He's Mr. Burns not Homer btw. I'm no expert but he appears more confident with it than he did in the Folk film A Mighty Wind
