1. Cat Burrito

Hi

Welcome to Basschat
2. Bump for Thursday & Friday's gigs. Bristol is 2 sets and we are the only band. Maidenhead is support slot time so get there early to catch us As always it would be good to see any Basschatters down there
3. I would hope there aren't too many on here who honestly believe their clever use of a pentatonic minor scale will stop the war in Afganistan... but you never know!? I guess 20yrs ago I'd hoped amongst other things that I'd get to make a living from music without compromising my tastes. I didn't want to be famous but to work at a cult level would have been nice. Still, no regrets. Ultimately goals change though. I've set myself a few realistic goals 1) done sessions, 2) played on TV, 3) played the Marquee, 4) released a vinyl record, 5) toured. The only one I am yet to do is play abroad. We have some dates booked for Southern Ireland in October and interest from a promoter in the US so hopefully that'll change. Ultimately though my ambition has always been to enjoy playing the music I play and I've achieved that throughout. I'll never be rich, I've seriously compromised my career and a few relationships but it's been fun along the way.
4. I too had a CIJ 75 RI & again no problems. I owned it for nearly 10yrs. It is generally acknowledged with vintage instruments that you should proceed with a bit more caution around 3 bolt. They don't need to be completely avoided but *can* be more problematic
5. I'm happier now with my tone than I've ever been. In the studio I used an old Fender solid state combo blended in with a DI tone & it sounded amazing. Live wise I play Precisions through Ampeg cabs & either a Bassman or Ampeg head. A big part of my sound was sorting out my strings & my fingers though and this should not be underestimated.
6. I put flatwounds on mine (a bit different), don't tend to strum chord shapes & play mainly with my fingers. There are a lot of tones on the Rickenbackers & my 4003 sounds more traditional then that.
7.
Hitchy, every one will say what they like... but what sort of tone are you looking for?? vintage, modern,? do you want silent pups, single coils.. unless we know, we cant help..
You beat me to it! It's a buyers market these days & the world is your lobster. There are a lot of good brands nowadays
8. Since my post on page 1 in December 09, four have become five ...I need to colour coordinate my outfit, y'see (l-r) My Fender Precisions are 1989 MIJ, 2008 CIJ, 1978 USA, bitsa (mainly 70s USA), 2006 USA
9.
I have one knocking around here somewhere - I'll dig it out if I remember and measure. Wouldn't want to use it on a bass with too much weight to it though... AHA! Amazed myself and found it. It adjusts from 56" to 44". Mine's not got the contrasting stitching, but I've had it for a while so maybe they've changed them a bit. They're suede lined on the shoulder side, and - asd the website says - padded. Mine's currently sat doing nowt, if you're interested?
Thanks Richard but being 6'3" I need at least 58" & ideally 60" to be at my ideal playing height.
10. The new ones on sale measure 160cm as I asked an EBay seller & are now padded to take the weight of a P-bass more easily Needless to say that seller got a sale!
11. http://www.fender.com/uk/products/search.p...rtno=0990689000 They look great edited to give answer - 142cm - should anyone want to know & search this thread
12. I thought it might have been a Jazz bass
13. I'm a massive Fender fan but the quality control can be a bit shocking on occasions. I agree with walbassist here. You could complain but it's probably going to be ok to be fair.
14. I like The Beatles but they are not my favourites. Paul McCartney is a great bassist & I have always said this. I reckon most members of the public think he plays guitar though.
15. Could it be a refinished 62 RI Precision bass? That'd be my first thought. Got any more pics?
16. I see myself as a bassist but it is a bass *guitar* I'm afraid. I too play a bit of upright, now that isn't a guitar. However I have to admit I'm much more of a bass guitarist. To use an earlier quote, who cares? It doesn't really matter
17. Welcome to Basschat... your english is certainly better than my French - I can just about manage Je joue la basse dans un groupe de Americana & I bet that's wrong!
18. I have both maple & rosewood P-basses (yeah, I know you said J - I've owned both types too) and I have to say the difference is minimal. I prefer rosewood on a bass & do like maple on telecasters but there are great examples of the opposite on both. You are more likely to get obvious tonal differences by changing pickups, trying different strings or playing different ways (ie pick vs fingers) then frpm what your fretboard is made of. There is a difference but it really is slight
19. It does look a bit like a Hagstrom although I've only ever seen them in that cherry red finish. The configuartion of volume / tone knobs is wrong though. Hagstrom did a Fender type headstock on the 604 though - see below Can I have half marks for spotting the guitarists were using a Gibson les Paul and a Fender Telecaster? edited for laughing symbol in case anyone thought I was being serious!
20. Thanks Jon - Absolutely zero interest at this stage so bumping it back up there
21. Now on EBay - although I seem to have put the price up by £4.50 since last October?! edited for the link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Squier-Teleca...=item1e5d2c3369
22. Last weekend was fairly sedate with people reading The Independant and we had fresh fruit in the van... rewind 15yrs & I remember our roadie urinating out the back of the van as we drove down the motorway! I must be getting old, I prefer life now
23. Considering the huge amount of time I spend on here I can't believe I missed the excitement... must have been reading up on string trees!?
24. I own a Mapleglo 4003 too & it's an awesome bass. Somebody will get a great deal here by the looks of things
