1. This link just cropped up in the right hand ad column of my Facebook page. No idea what the company is like but I liked a couple of the designs and they do seem to have all the bases (ahem!) covered when it comes to, um, basses. 2.
You lot are always getting angry at the telly. Just don't watch the telly!
I don't think anyone is getting angry and there isn't a post on this thread to suggest this is the case. I would agree that there are far better things to do in life than watch TV but a little bit of TV never hurt anyone. I discovered some of my favourite bands through TV and it was TV that made me want to play in the first place, watching music shows (records got me into music, TV made me want to play it). And remember we're all reading this online - starring at a different kind of screen!
3. I like it although I'd prefer it to be less busy with the pickup configuration. I'm sure that bass would fit in with many genres, being an occasional country player myself it's a very small part of the genre that is that showy.
4.
Cheers man, should really sort out my photography though. Any knobs yet?
Nope, 'fraid not. As said I got myself sorted out but it's still annoying that it became one of the increasingly common packages that Royal Mail didn't fancy delivering
5.
Once again it needs to be said playing a musical instrument is not a competition. There is no best...
Superbly put. Stewart Copeland was making some good points. I'd always champion Charlie Watts over Keith Moon but I think generally the public like flash and showmanship over steadiness and solidness. It all comes down to taste. I remember kids at school debating for hours over whether Clapton, Hendrix or Knopfler was the best guitarist and the reality was most of the kids at school didn't know what a chord was. Ultimately it all comes to taste... but there is nothing really wrong with that, debating is the fun part.
6. Looking good Wayne
7.
Oh no!! Not the Flea thread again
It was / is meant to be an "Oh no!! Not the Bass Players neglected by the BBC thread again" actually but I guess it can go that way too
I missed the program - who were the others shortlisted?
That was kind of my point. They never said so you had to go online
I switched on and someone was trying to argue that Slash was the best guitarist. I switched off again.
8. ....Flea, but the bass vote was only given airtime for the end result. Business as usual then! And no surprises
9. I had a Peavey combo from the 80s through to 2005/6. I bought it secondhand for £50, did hundreds of gigs with it & eventually sold it for £120. You can't argue with that... the bloke I sold it to got an electric shock off it too!
10.
... and Leo shows how it's done ...
Great photo
11. Hi Marty, welcome to Basschat
12.
The tug bar isn't the technique, it's the "thumb rest" that's under the strings instead of above them.
D'oh! I did know that - must be having a slow day!!!
13. I haven't played rock stuff in years but Rotosound regular gauge strings worked fine for me at the time.
14. I'm not sure where I've been hiding but I haven't heard that technique called the tugbar before. I have used it myself & occasionally it works really well. Great clip too btw
15. Voted! I went for blessed double bass
16. Welcome to Basschat
17. Carl bought my MXR Super comp pedal from me, great comms & prompt payment (& he even gifted the payment which meant a small fee for him too) - very cool to deal with
18. Very common when they don't have both front of house and onstage sound, i.e. the pub venues etc. The obvious thing to do is to communicate with the soundman and turn down your amp. I agree with casapete on empty room soundchecks. Line checks are fine but musicians need to be adaptable to the changes and adjust volumes (up or down) accordingly or move angles of cabs.
19. If anyone on a budget wants a Jag bass & can't wait, these keep popping up on EBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tuscany-Jag-bass-gui...=item23079cd2d8 No idea what they are like though
20.
Know what you mean - In the eighties, I used a Laney Linebacker 65watt combo, in a punk band with drummer, and 2 guitarists, one of whom had a Marshall JCM800 50watt 2x12 combo (loud, loud, loud) and I used to keep up (I think)
I think Laney Linebacker's were issued to all 80s punk bands! Speaking from experience.
21. I was impressed when I first saw them and the weight really appeals. However I am happy with my current set up and don't want to wind up with a house full of cabs (again!).
22. Welcome to Basschat Sprocket
23. Welcome to Basschat Andy
24. I've worn trilby hats onstage & I don't care that I'm 37. I think wearing a hat is about having confidence. If you feel awkward you will look silly. My singer has taken to wearing a trilby so I don't bother now. I also wore a Derby Bowler for years which was a great look... the band wore suits and I looked like a rock n roll version of Mr. Benn!
25.
Oh I f***ing hate The Rascal Flatts
I always thought Rascal Flats (sic) would be a great username on Basschat! Don't care for the band too much either, although I'm surprised when people in the UK have heard of them
