1. I must learn it too some day. I picked up on the 3 basses at the time as I first saw it when I first started playing
2. I mentioned this in a few other threads but I've owned my 57RI Fender P-bass (MIJ) since I started playing seriously. It's a 1989 model and saw REALLY heavy use around 1994/5. Being young, drunk and dumb I kicked it about and mistreated it. In recent years I've discovered GAS but this is the one bass I'd never get rid of. Together it's been on TV with me, it's played the Marquee with me, it's toured most of England with me and I can account for every battle scar. When I half heartedly tried trashing it one night in Bristol I was told by my local shop at the time I'd permanently bent the neck but he'd straightened it out "best I could". However I've since been told this was not true. Recently I thought the neck was finally bowing so decided to get a new neck. I swapped the pickguard and added the ashtrays about 12yrs ago (oh, and the thumbrest). I've also recently become more of a rosewood convert so decided to give it a 62RI vibe. I acquired a 62RI neck and it's gotten a new lease of life. I hope you enjoy the pics. and in it's original incarnation (the model has aged less well by the way!)
3. Pretty much every MIM Classic series I've played has been stunning and I've played a lot of them. I'm certainly not disputing a couple of the above comments as you always get duff models but I'd lean towards these bass owners being unlucky. I've played literally dozens (including the 70s RI Jazz) and they have all been great instruments.
4.
somethings telling me that a set of Seymour Duncan SPB-1's could be making their way into it if I buy one haha
I have the SPB-1 in mine
5. the 51RI neck is much chunkier than the 57RI neck. Superb bass, especially if you like the retro vibe. My first bass was / is a 50s RI but from back when they were MIJ. The new current crop are as good
6. Very nice
Unnecessary bits removed for playing...
Still, good for a pose though!
7. Perhaps Craig from Bros playing a P-bass had more of an influence on me than I realised?!
8. I remember all of this the first time around and didn't care for it too much then. Definitely born into the wrong era. I started playing in the 80s too
9.
Thanks for that mate it's all quite tongue in cheek but we have a great time. Our singer was actually originally the drummer and had never really sang before but stepped up to the plate to give singing a go when our original guy left, which took a bit of balls. He is improving all the time and is a great guy which is the most important thing, you can always get singing lessons but it's harder to fix a dodgy personality
Completely agree. For the record I'd come & see you if you were local. I've worked with weaker singers so hope that observation didn't come across as too picky.
10.
Nah, if you want ghetto straplocks the rubber bits from Grolsch bottles are the way to go.
Beat me to it!
11. I agree with the general conscenious expressed so far. I've always said that it doesn't take a lot to get a good sound but it takes a lot to get a great sound. A £300 amp sounds maybe 7.5 out of 10 but you spend perhaps 4 times that to only go up a couple of marks at best. Ultimately it comes down to the buy off, is it really worth it? To a lot of us it is but then I think this is why we've had a lot of good players on here raving about the new Squiers lately.
12. I had one of these & colour scheme aside (or should I say I acknowledge it's not to everybodies taste) it's great stock. The original neck especially! That said it's a fair price considering
13. A fair point on MySpace. Always nice to hear these instruments, good arrangements too. Personally I'm not massively a fan of your singer's voice but he's fine and the band sounds great. A bit of a Hayseed Dixie vibe and of course it's always good to hear Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms.
14. I have some Picato flats on my Dobro bass (granted this has to be the least "Rock" set up imaginable!) but I find them to be perfectly serviceable. I'd go with the deal personally & I've often wondered about endorsements myself.
15. Liking Sibob's 80s Squier too
16.
what about a set of flat wounds? Might be worth trying if you prefer a dull thud as opposed to a toppy ping.
Exactly what I was thinking.
17. Also available left handed.... some 80s silliness for those who remember
18. It is quite a good photo but the photographer should have moved that cup and his finger
19. I think you've improved the look. Not a Queen fan personally but the bass looks great and I admire the attention to detail. I think Fenders are made to be modded.
20. Thanks. If only we'd have all got together & booked some inbetween-y gigs for your band, you could keep the bass!
21. What a bargain for someone! Sorry to hear you didn't gel with this one Clarky, that pup (as you know) is in mine too & I have the ashtrays - both tasteful upgrades that keep in spirit with the vibe of the bass. This is an awesome bass and a great price for someone. Have a best of luck with the sale bump
22. In the local guitar shop today a lad comes in with his telecaster that he tunes down to C. He is complaining that the strings are too rattley. He then adds that he tends to mainly play halfway up the neck. D'oh!
23. I was after one but settled for a resonnator bass. I suspect it's all more of a pose than a truly great instrument or it would be more mainstream. That said I'd still love one! Might yet happen one day
24. Missing the buzz from live playing as we've been working on new stuff so the singer & I jumped on a train to Reading and did a couple of tunes at a local Open Mic night. I took the Resonator bass restrung with flats and it sounded good.
25. Now I remember these back in the day & they were Squier's budget range. £130 is a bit hopeful or am I missing something? http://www.josaka.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24895
