I really miss the Fender Bassman head and 2x15 cab that i had.
What make is the resonator ? i could do with something like that.
Nobody has ever owned up to making that Resonator! It has a blank headstock. It was shipped from Houston, TX but I don't suppose it is USA made. Could be I suppose but I've always assumed it's from the Bluegrass Republic of China. They do pop up on EBay but not as common as they should be. It's a great bass and for the money it was an absolute steal
Vintage & Rare Guitars in Bath blew it for me a few years ago when I was asking about 51 P-basses and the guy was really snooty saying they didn't exist. I've seen some good stock since but that left a bad taste in my mouth. They are not the cheapest but they do have a good reputation. Equally not cheap but prone to 100% genuine stuff is http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/basses.htm - but not a "shop" as such. You can go and try stuff if you are serious though. All by appointment. I've bought from him a couple of times
I think most musicians go through similar. I had a phase in my late teens where there were a couple of dry spells. At the time it felt like it went on forever but actually the longest break was about 9 months. Stay positive and something will come along.
I don't listen to a lot of music with bass as a lead instrument but I do like to hear it occasionally. The one that stands out for me is the warts and all production job on The Byrds Live at the Royal Albert Hall 1971 CD that came out a year or two ago with SKip Battin soloing on Eight Miles High
As a personal view I think there is more choice now then ever & you can't go too far wrong with many of the practice amps out there these days. This certainly wasn't the case when I started
I remember seeing these about at the time. I think the MIMs initially tried to up their game by offering funky colours. More recently the modifications have been to improve playability but I remember these being good fun
I can almost hear it! I love those Rotosound strings too - have them on my USA 60th Anniversary P-bass. My wife and I did briefly discuss me buying this but, and I quote her, "no, no, no, no, no!" which was more a comment on me then your bass!
That is lovely! I can't see it hanging around long. I'm half tempted myself but must resist! Is that strung with black nylons or are they just the original strings?
After bass I went on to mandolin. Small but it does chuck the sound out a bit. Not louder than an acoustic guitar though. And the 8 strings are strung like an upside down 8 string bass (or a violin!) so it comes a bit easier than uke which is strung like a madman!
The biggest change I ever had was swapping a plectrum played P-bass for fingerstyle on a Jazz back in the 90s. Without touching the dials on the amp it made one hell of a difference. I also moved my hand further up the strings so I got much more bass. I've since changed again a few times over but that was the most extreme
In recent months we've had talk of Rick Danko, Randy Meisner (courtesy of me that one) and a few other legends of 70s country rock.
I'd like to throw Mr. Skip Battin into the equation. Forget the classic line up of the Byrds (& I love Chris Hillman), I think the band was really cooking during their "Hairy Byrds" era with Clarence White. Floating ladies aside here they are in action
I've just picked up the Sierra Records release of his unreleased 1973 forgotten classic "Topanga Skyline" which is awesome enough for my wife to come running downstairs demanding to know who it was so she could burn a copy onto her Ipod! Interestingly he has Chris Etheridge playing bass on the album and doing a damn fine job as I've come to expect.
Excuse my ignorance here but I connect my amp head to the cab via 2 jack to jack cables. Both are great quality as I don't like to skimp on cables. My backup head is solid state and has a single speakon cable socket as an alternative to the 2 jacks. Is this just a different option or are speakon regarded as a better signal? I'd be interested to know. Cheers
I used to be master of the scissor kick & I have desk tapes which prove I could do so without dropping a beat (admittedly the basslines back then weren't exactly rocket science). I'm just shy of 6'3" and the audience always used to take bets on whether I'd knock myself out on the ceilings (I never did)
These days I'm a bit calmer so no cool tricks for me
