1. I had the same with my 20yr old P-bass. The bridge was actually rusty underneath from when I used to play with a pick in my punk days and rest my hand on the bridge. Some sweaty gigs and as a result the bridge was pretty knackered. Copper tape was the answer again. The bass wasn't earthed properly as it needed a clean up.
2. I just bought a Resonator Bass which is extremely good fun. Not like a double bass but it loosely fits that sort of look, although tonally very different. I think depending on what style of music you play, it may be worth considering a traditional bass guitar. I play acoustic-y music and if I don't use a double bass a P-bass is fine. Rarer than hen's teeth to stumble across but here's my resonator bass
3. Looks great! I love the attention to detail all over. The neckplate is a nice touch. I've got mine done but they are not as detailed as that
4.
sorry..... who's Matt Garrison? I take it hes good then
You mean to say you've not heard of Matt Garrison? No, me neither!
5. I think audiences respond well to stuff they know. So it's classic cheese. We do a bunch of Neil Diamond stuff that goes down great - I've never heard anyone else do this in pub gigs but the reaction is incredible.
6. Harley Benton are of course Thomann's own brand. My only experience of there's is a Harley Benton acoustic that was so warped and had an action of an almost an inch at the 12th fret that it was basically good for firewood. Kind of off putting.
7. But he's got 100% feedback from the one time he used EBay 12 months ago!
8. Someone on Talkbass talking rubbish? I find that very hard to swallow! In some circles (amongst 5 string players for example!?!) this may be the case but you have to ask yourself why is it whenever you go into a shop, flick through a tuition book or see a band on TV it's usually a 4 string bass / player.
9.
well we play hard rock/ metal, its just the rhythm in the solos does drop, it just missing the cut the our old guitarist gave it.
If your lead guitarist adapted his playing and used more double stops as opposed to single notes you'd be amazed how big the band can sound. I agree with the earlier post which says change what you play, pedals shouldn't be relied on too heavily. I think you'll find it'll wake the band up a bit (& I say that not having heard you).
10. I mic my amp up. One thing which amazes me about this site is that nobody ever mentions kit shares. I find with bass all too often there is a house backline or a kit share which prevents me from using my own gear. Granted, I could always take my own amp but as bass amps aren't the lightest I tend to go with that arrangement
11. I'd love to play the US! Sadly I can think of a million excuses why I can't drop everything and go on tour abroad. Still if they are genuine it's a great opportunity. I don't doubt I'll get to play a show in the US at some point in my life
12. On behalf of all Johnny Cash fans & country bass players, I'd just like to say listen to some bluegrass players. All the top Nashville bass players are actually serious virtuosos when you see them in soundchecks or just messing around! The PurpleBlob is right - deceptively simple sometimes!?
13. in which case it's one wrong photo that looks like it was uploaded in error. The other headstock photos appear correct
14. I assume this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-precision-bas...id=p3286.c0.m14
15.
Myself, i only play in bands playing original music... and only play music i love to play, however, it'd be nice to play in a function band to make some money on the side.
My Dad was a pro Jazz drummer in the 60s and he wound up playing on tons of stuff he HATED. I've never made it past semi pro but ALWAYS played stuff that reflects where my head is at. I've predominately played in originals bands but when I've played covers they are always songs I really like. I can only think of one jam gig I ever did (in over 20yrs) where I played stuff I didn't like. I'm as enthusiac about music now as when I was a kid. My Dad rarely listens to music now & hasn't owned a drum kit since the 60s. Go figure!
16.
Fender Precision Classic 50s Photos keep them coming...
Mine pre-dates the MIM Classic series and is a modified 20yr old MIJ version of the 50s P-bass but and I also own the early 50s classic series P-bass Both are excellent. Both modified with Seymour Duncan pickups, change of pickguards, ashtray covers and thumb rests.
17. I write my own. I've worked with songwriters in the past who try to dicate what I should do - in which case I try and base what I do on their idea but make it better. For me it's all part of the creative process. That said I don't knock people who do covers and pull off a good bassline exactly. It's all good fun
18. I've just had a cheapie bass imported - no issues. Sound advice on the warranty here. Mine was fine but when you start spending serious cash bear in mind you really do start getting hammered on the charges
19. I've met up with old bands and the ego of the singer (for example) suddenly doesn't matter. I think when it's longer term the old cracks start to appear but for one offs it usually winds up being a laugh. We did some reunion recording which was more fun then gigging. I don't think you'll ever recapture old glories as often singers haven't sung for years etc but it's worth it for having a laugh.
20. 3/4 seems to be the standard. What you are used to aside, you need to think of the practical aspects of transport etc. I have a 3/4 and it takes up a lot of room in the car (I have a medium sized car). Add your other kit and it becomes a factor. With the end pin out & set for the right height for me it's about 7' high (obviously smaller when not in use).
21.
Get some lemon oil on that fingerboard. There was a chap selling a bass banjo locally, could chase up, see where it went. Was made out of a drum.
Interested in the bass banjo if you can do some digging. PM me if there are any developments. These pics are straight out the box so the lemon oil will be happening - I've seen worse so I'm not too worried. It'll look cooler when the fretboard darkens up too!
22.
Very cool Is it louder than a regular acoustic bass guitar?
No, it's not. It's quite unique sounding as stated. It has some volume to it but isn't all that loud. Good enough though.
23. I've owned a few Epiphone basses in the past and must be one of the few people that didn't mind the neck dive. I've known of the old trick of replacing the strap button to the neckplate for some time but never bothered.
