I think there is a wider issue with our interest around celebrity death. When I heard about Eddie Van Halen, I went on Basschat and a notification came up on the 2020 deaths thread, as I had posted before. When I went on it there must have been 20-30 users viewing that thread. I'm not personally a fan of Van Halen but my social media would suggest all my friends were, not that I remember many of them mentioning it. I guess it us acknowledges a part of our childhoods that has now gone. Personally I have no issue with people posting playing tributes. if I am not interested, I won't click. I thought for years that these public displays started with Diana but Lennon & Elvis show that the public response is generally, um, public.

I try not to be intimidated by the musicianship of others, as said earlier by @chris_b. It's an opportunity to develop and learn, plus I would hope I bring something to every band I have been in. The closest I come to this predictament is the guitarist in my current main band is generally regarded as the best musician for miles and he started as a bass player. He has an incredible musical ear and has worked full time as a musician for over 35yrs. However I find his bass playing just a little bit too full on ALL THE TIME. He knows how to play but maybe not how NOT to play. Musically far superior to me but the singer / songwriter said to me just recently during a mix, "you tell him, he seems to respect you the most". In my humble opinion, the best musicians are those that can find value in even the most novice of players. Music isn't competitive! It's best when we are able to bring out the best in each other.

I like the simplicity of the vintage white which I can liven up with a funky pickguard.

My double bass has gone through many a set of PA speakers with no issues. Obviously it helps if the sound guy knows what they are doing. I had one amp head fail around 2010 where I had the same predicament with a bass guitar. A good DI box is usually the answer and will certainly get your tone sounding closer to where you want it.

I have two Eastwood basses and they are both decent quality - the EEB-1 (a fretted version of the Rick Danko model) and a Flying V bass. No issues with either. When you consider it wasn't just Hofner who did violin basses and there were some interesting variations by companies like Vox and Eko, I have no issue with this interpretation. I came close to buying the Eko version on a few occasions because I like the old 60s band The Grass Roots.

I own the blonde one and the grain looks amazing coming through the finish. The old butterscotch ones were very cool too.

Personally I have always liked LP records. I never really connected with CD in the same way and I find CD was only ever really good for the car. Vinyl has of course become fashionable now but I'm just old! I have about 800 of my LPs in the living room and love my Hi-Fi set up which is a Richer Sounds purchase from around 12 years ago. I'd always planned to upgrade but the stuff I have is so much better than any other system I have owned it doesn't seem worth doing.

My first decent band back in the early 90s did a live EP that got single of the week in RAW magazine. The screaming crowd were taken (stolen) directly from a Prince concert. One of my bands now is in the process of putting the finishing touches to a live album (thank you Covid-19). This one is completely live so just a really good desk tape. The listener can enjoy slightly frantic versions of the songs where the ride cymbal is way too loud in the mix!

Orange, hands down. Not lightweight but really well made & British at that. The 8x10 at Bannermans in Edinburgh is a joy to play but I love my 4x10.

My only thought is you'd get a decent quality gig bag that isn't Fender for a fraction of the price if you search out padded gig bags at most music shops / Amazon / EBay. Great thread! Love reading the replies. My parents records certainly shaped my interest in music - mostly Mum - 60s Stax Soul, early rock 'n' roll and some country. My Dad was a pro drummer in the 60s but gave it up to train as a teacher. The second I mentioned drums, I got sticks, brushes, a snare, bongos... but never really clicked with it. I was too young & you can't learn from your Dad (or I couldn't). Then at 15 in 1988 I started saving as my friends and I were going to buy instruments to form a band. I'd never saved for anything in my life but my parents matched my money and at Christmas I bought a Squier. Dad's best friend in music was a bass player and he'd show me drum brushes on bass strings and showed me the 12 bar blues structure. Occasionally he'd recommend something to listen to. He came to pick me up from rehearsal and would always moan about my singers. Then in November 1994, both my parents came to one of my gigs. Mum loved it (not the music so much, but the atmosphere) and Dad took photos. I still have a framed pic of me from that show in my living room. Sadly Mum started developing Alzheimer's around 2009 but they came to a second show in 2014. It was a much bigger show and I guest listed them. I don't think Mum fully kept up with what was going on and Dad was stressed from looking after Mum but she enjoyed it and met some of the band. I haven't played them a recording since 2011. In the early days of Mum's dementia I was playing them an EP and bless her, half way through she said "what is this crap?" The last thing I played her had a song when the band stops and there is a bass run. Mum said "that's my favourite bit" and it seemed a fitting last comment for her to make on my music.

The strap button was moved at least six years ago & people still regularly mention neck dive - it was fixed! I'm assuming people are either going from memory or playing older models. I love a T-bird but I would point out the Embassy was an Epiphone in it's own right, unlike the T-bird which was originally Gibson. Both current Epiphone models are very decent mid range basses.

I have a couple of Eastwood basses & like them a lot. My favourite bass player / influence Sami Yaffa was playing the Orange Eastwood for a while. I wouldn't normally be affording the Gretsch but it was second hand & I had that payout. 😻

Having had repeated warnings from Mark at Classic & Cool Guitars about the unreliability of post during Covid, it actually touched down safely inside of 24hrs of sending payment. Immaculate, light, and cool as. Strung with quality flatwounds (unsure of brand but they feel great) it has that classic woody thump when played finger style and with a pick it reminded me of that 60s tone on Scott Walker records. The head won't be with me until next week but this was a sure fire hit!
