  1. Twenty years TODAY since my last ever cigarette. A real milestone. The 90s always saw me onstage with a cigarette, smoking in the studio or in rehearsal. 100% willpower and positive mental attitude.

Great achievement, well done.  I quit in December 2008 :)

Well done Cat Burrito - it really is an achievement.... don't forget that
      Keep it going matey :) :) :)

Congrats - it's 6 years since I quit alcohol completely. Still do the fags I'm afraid. We survived the 80s and 90s but personally I don't understand how. I mean Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Ginger Baker etc etc... how???

  2. Personally I love gigging. I was getting a little jaded around 1999 / 2000 so I stopped, took a 4 year break and came back to it with a vengeance. I love it now more than ever before.
  3. I love my ebony one...only niggle is it is much heavier than my Gibson but as Lozz says, worth it for that chrome.
  4. For some reason I still have the original pickup and pickguard from my first bass, a 1989 Fender Precision '57 reissue. All my basses are fairly modern now but I did own a few from the 70s and I believe late 60s that all went when times got a little tighter a few years back.
  5. I wish Fender would do a 1951 reissue Precision again. I've owned 3 and it's the only bass I regret selling. Don't know how well they sell but it's long overdue a reissue.
  6. Only of the last few months I started using an AKG WMS40 which got great reviews on Amazon. None of us could detect any latency issues, although I have had a couple of issues with battery life if I don't watch it like a hawk i.e. fresh battery at the start of every big gig. I love the freedom of it, especially as we're an energetic band.
  7. My current band is energetic. I'm the youngest at 46 and we're leaping around, jumping off drum risers etc. I work out every day and usually hit around 15000 steps a day according to my Fitbit. I remember my first show with them; my Fitbit sent me a notification during the gig to say "it appears you are having a workout!"
  8. I've seen a fair few people on YouTube and not had a massive problem with any of them. If I don't like their style, I simply move on. The great thing about this thread is 1) I hadn't come across any of these guys and 2) I avoided clicking the links! I don't know what I am doing right but hopefully I will keep on doing it.
  9. I played Norway last weekend and have played there before. Great country, great crowds. My thoughts would be; The airlines will fleece you if you don't do your homework. I'm talking about flying with instruments but Ryanair charged us £150 for a misspelling of the drummer's name! It was cheaper for my bass to have it's own seat last week. Alcohol is expensive so get it on the rider if you want a few drinks. We got meals and accommodation included in every show which made life easier. With last week's festival we even got a driver to pick us up and ferry us around. Have fun. I can't wait to go back.
  10. I relate mostly to 11 but it's probably only about 60% of the picture. I agree that it reads like lazy clickbait journalism but it gave me something to do for about 90 seconds.
  11. Moderation Notice: Topics merged from earlier duplicate thread.
  12. Me too... although I probably shouldn't and couldn't really afford it.
  13. Funny thing is Adam Clayton would be a bigger draw.
  14. Showing up on time and learning the songs is the benchmark for me. Being able to get along with everyone would be the other part of that trilogy. Next up, look the part and buy the occasional drink. The finesse part is the helping pack away bit. Anything else is either a bonus or a miracle!
  15. She's worth a google. She wrote a book about training your musical ear. She's quite a big name on the subject of bass theory.
  16. Wow! The design team have really ripped up the rule book with these new models!
  17. I used to rehearse there too circa 2004 / 2005 😻 Sadly my holidays are less exotic.
  18. See now I just assumed it was and thought he must have eaten all of Axl's puppy fat that he's spent the last 30yrs piling on!
  19. Worse still, as per the original post, I'm not even overweight! I think I need to learn a different instrument.
  20. Does the same apply to the rule that bass players also always wear a shirt and tie but absolutely nothing below the waist?
  21. Better than I was. I have an upright bass in the corner of the living room, along with a couple of bass guitars and there is also a bass guitar in the bedroom. The rest are in cases and I do rotate them a bit. I usually take a bass on breaks with me too. My coffee table even has the Geddy Lee book and most of my bookshelves are full of bass books. I'm sure I'm far from the worst offender / winner of this thread but I am certainly up there.
  22. At a festival that I played at recently I was drinking at the bar and a guy came up and asked if he could chat. Of course. He liked the band and ended the conversation with "I think it's really cool that you hang out with us like you are just normal"... er?!? I've been recognised on holiday (impressed my now wife, no end!) and been asked a number of times if I have a day job too. People are funny.
  23. I still remember Victoria Beckham on TFI Friday back in the 90s, without a hint of irony, describing herself as a singer songwriter. Nobody in the audience laughed.
  24. I love this thread. I went back on Amazon and bought it for £20. It's amazing. It has to be the heaviest book I own and the pictures are beautiful. The book to end all books on bass!
  25. And there are thieves who operate in Poundland! 😂
