I think there are loads of choice these days. I was firmly in the big Ampeg stack camp but after 30yrs of playing my Osteopath didn't share my optimism in having another 10yrs of heavy lifting. Everyone on these pages raves about Barefaced & I really like my Aguilar cab. I don't know who is best but certainly the choice is must wider now than it ever used to be.

What is it with BC and hostility??!
Cat Burrito replied to Bassislife16's topic in General Discussion
I think perspective is the key. The vast majority behave impeccably here with just one or two moments of silliness. -
Super cool. Probably going to take this on my European Tour next month. It just screamed rock 'n' roll to me. 😺

Growing up, I was pretty clued up about everything from David Bowie to the Rolling Stones. I think I had a pretty good musical education. I actively sought out stuff that was supposed to be classic so knew Led Zeppelin, a lot of punk and Motown etc. I never liked grunge so Nirvana's Nevermind was never part of my musical vocabulary and Jeff Buckley's Grace didn't do it for me. It wasn't until my mid 20s that I discovered Curtis Mayfield and my 30s that I got into The Band, both of whom I love.

2019 Gear Abstinence Challenge (Updated with 'rules')

I won't be able to afford anything else this year so perhaps if a yellow card could be put on my file, I can start afresh -

I'd missed this thread which probably explains why on the evening of January 1st I ordered an Ebony Thunderbird -
Am i finally out of touch? ..are you?
Cat Burrito replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I don't worry about it. Things move in cycles. I haven't kept up but this week everyone's talking about the Bros documentary so I feel back in the know! -
My standard is annoying my singer. I usually say down the mic to the soundman "you know this is the main one, right?" At our first really decent gig he asked for more bass in his monitor and I replied down the mic "it's always nice to meet a fan". Nine and a 1/2 years later he's still scarred by that one!

I finally watched it last night. Yes, they were slightly set up. Yes, they are a couple of twits. I also found them to be quite likeable twits. And Luke Goss is actually a better drummer than the 14yr old me would have ever acknowledged.

Bands you just discovered that made you go “Wow!”
Cat Burrito replied to TrevorR's topic in General Discussion
I don't think many new bands have gotten me too excited since at least the 90s but just recently there's been a crop of bands who remind me of my Glam / Punk roots and they've shaken the middle age out of me. -
Apparently not, it would seem. At least I'm wearing the right threads though! 😺

Personally I try not to play too long as we try and be quick, especially for multi band bills. I may bust out that funky little bass riff in the Kiss song Torpedo Girl but usually it's just a half a verse of a song from our set to ensure my rig sounds good.

Everyone has recommended it to me (& no I wasn't a Bros fan back in the day!). Reading this thread I am crying with laughter so I HAVE to watch this!

I took a little longer to be any good at this and three tips that I'd give (i.e. where I went wrong years ago) are 1) make sure you are always in tune, 2) make sure your bass is going through an amp so it's audible and 3) don't even attempt to do it listening through laptop speakers (or presumably a phone these days!) - you need a decent stereo so you can pick out the bass. Personally I plug the laptop / MP3 player into the practice amp and play along. Or if it is a record, I just turn the record player up and play along.
-
We all did that! What everyone must remember is that you've all agreed in the T&Cs when you signed up that none of you can sue us! It's like the law or something.
-
Personally I like to mix it up and have a variety of different basses but I will say a P-bass works in everything from reggae to blues to Iron Maiden. Showing up for a Hard Rock gig with a Hofner (okay one or two exceptions) or a Folk gig with a Thunderbird might raise an eyebrow or two. Ultimately you should be able to play anything on any bass but image has rightly or wrongly always been a part of modern music.

HMV was definitely part of my childhood, a bit like Our Price etc. Coincidentally I ordered a couple of David Bowie things from them just this week, having not placed an order with them in ages. Thankfully they showed up today. End of an era though.

Some very, ahem, brave looking basses here! 😎 Of course a lot of guys actually just played fairly conventional basses like Thunderbirds and Precisions too but it's nice to see a bit of variety.

Just a gentle reminder to, ahem, keep it country, on this thread. No formal warnings but please make sure you adhere to Basschat rules about being respectful and also BC rules about not commenting on prices of things for sale here. I've hidden a couple of posts but no further action at this stage.

I don't think Rickenbacker has ever been overrated or even just rated on these pages. A shame as I love mine.

What are you learning / working on right now?
Cat Burrito replied to Crawford13's topic in General Discussion
The tour hasn't officially been announced *yet* and as it isn't my gig, I am a bit reluctant to go too public right now but when it does I will probably do a thread. I will say we start in Edinburgh on Feb 13th and run through London and a few Midlands / Northern dates before going onto to Italy. I'm hoping I can be a bit more public when I rehearse next month as I am really excited about it. -

I should probably add, in relation to the original post, that it means I am working on picking songs out from the record as there are no guides, scores or tabs. I'm loving it at the moment and I've not even done a rehearsal (just an audition). -

I have a dep gig for February / March, touring the UK, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. It's all simple rock basslines (original songs) but a lot to learn. -
I think it depends on location. I'm very in demand where I live but I've had phases where drummers are hard to come by (probably the most common) and probably every role has been in demand.
