  1. My standard is annoying my singer. I usually say down the mic to the soundman "you know this is the main one, right?" At our first really decent gig he asked for more bass in his monitor and I replied down the mic "it's always nice to meet a fan". Nine and a 1/2 years later he's still scarred by that one!
  2. I finally watched it last night. Yes, they were slightly set up. Yes, they are a couple of twits. I also found them to be quite likeable twits. And Luke Goss is actually a better drummer than the 14yr old me would have ever acknowledged.
  3. I don't think many new bands have gotten me too excited since at least the 90s but just recently there's been a crop of bands who remind me of my Glam / Punk roots and they've shaken the middle age out of me.
  4. Apparently not, it would seem. At least I'm wearing the right threads though! 😺
  5. Personally I try not to play too long as we try and be quick, especially for multi band bills. I may bust out that funky little bass riff in the Kiss song Torpedo Girl but usually it's just a half a verse of a song from our set to ensure my rig sounds good.
  6. Everyone has recommended it to me (& no I wasn't a Bros fan back in the day!). Reading this thread I am crying with laughter so I HAVE to watch this!
  7. I took a little longer to be any good at this and three tips that I'd give (i.e. where I went wrong years ago) are 1) make sure you are always in tune, 2) make sure your bass is going through an amp so it's audible and 3) don't even attempt to do it listening through laptop speakers (or presumably a phone these days!) - you need a decent stereo so you can pick out the bass. Personally I plug the laptop / MP3 player into the practice amp and play along. Or if it is a record, I just turn the record player up and play along.
  8. We all did that! What everyone must remember is that you've all agreed in the T&Cs when you signed up that none of you can sue us! It's like the law or something.
  9. Personally I like to mix it up and have a variety of different basses but I will say a P-bass works in everything from reggae to blues to Iron Maiden. Showing up for a Hard Rock gig with a Hofner (okay one or two exceptions) or a Folk gig with a Thunderbird might raise an eyebrow or two. Ultimately you should be able to play anything on any bass but image has rightly or wrongly always been a part of modern music.
  10. HMV was definitely part of my childhood, a bit like Our Price etc. Coincidentally I ordered a couple of David Bowie things from them just this week, having not placed an order with them in ages. Thankfully they showed up today. End of an era though.
  11. Some very, ahem, brave looking basses here! 😎 Of course a lot of guys actually just played fairly conventional basses like Thunderbirds and Precisions too but it's nice to see a bit of variety.
  12. Just a gentle reminder to, ahem, keep it country, on this thread. No formal warnings but please make sure you adhere to Basschat rules about being respectful and also BC rules about not commenting on prices of things for sale here. I've hidden a couple of posts but no further action at this stage.
  13. I don't think Rickenbacker has ever been overrated or even just rated on these pages. A shame as I love mine.
  14. The tour hasn't officially been announced *yet* and as it isn't my gig, I am a bit reluctant to go too public right now but when it does I will probably do a thread. I will say we start in Edinburgh on Feb 13th and run through London and a few Midlands / Northern dates before going onto to Italy. I'm hoping I can be a bit more public when I rehearse next month as I am really excited about it.
  15. I should probably add, in relation to the original post, that it means I am working on picking songs out from the record as there are no guides, scores or tabs. I'm loving it at the moment and I've not even done a rehearsal (just an audition).
  16. I have a dep gig for February / March, touring the UK, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. It's all simple rock basslines (original songs) but a lot to learn.
  17. I think it depends on location. I'm very in demand where I live but I've had phases where drummers are hard to come by (probably the most common) and probably every role has been in demand.
  18. The only two that spring to my mind were a Burns Bison (it just sounded really *thin* in the mix) and an Epiphone Flying V, which again sounded weak. I've since bought a Flying V that sounds good but that's an Eastwood so better quality. Hate could probably be substituted for disappointment when describing those two.
  19. Two from me... Firstly the Manic Street Preachers. I loved the first 3 albums but when everyone was raving about Everything Must Go, I couldn't help feel that it wasn't as good. I simply haven't kept up with the band since. And secondly The Black Crowes. I loved the debut and was really into the follow up but they then started doing jams that lasted a week and a half, appearing on the cover of High Times and I remember thinking "the drugs DON'T work!"
  20. It certainly delivered... just maybe get a roadie too!?
  21. I was varying between the PF115, the PF410 or both, with the theory that I had a good ten years before I needed to go more lightweight. My osteopath didn't share my optimism though so I now have an Aguilar DB112 that actually sounds really cool. The 2 cab Ampeg rig did look amazing though! 😎
  22. My main head has been the PF50-t since it came out (2015, I believe?). Hands down it is my favourite amp head for my needs. Loud enough but not too loud, substantive but not too heavy and personally I love the look. I've owned everything from a 1978 all tube Fender bassman to several Class D heads and this one just sounds right across all my bands / projects. The vintage stuff is great but if you are playing live a lot, modern stuff is going to require less maintenance and be less hard work. Recording wise you can record through just the PF50-t but I find running a Tech21 Sansamp VT gives me the best studio sound I have ever had.
  23. I don't know this for certain but I'm going to say Steps. Simply because I can't imagine they were any worse!
  24. Welcome to the Ric owners club. There's not a lot of Ric-love on these pages but I love my 4003s ruby red bass. I keep meaning to modify the pickup cover but it just seems such a faff. One day...
  25. The best and worst purchase for me was this extension of my mid-life crisis that I started back in '88!
