Do you take good gear to rough venues?
Cat Burrito replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
A quick tot up of my gigging rig puts me at £1500. £4K seems an awful lot of money to me.
I was gigging two Squiers and a second hand rig for a while but I now own a couple of £1500+ basses (I only take one at a time) and a £1200 rig - factor in cases, pedals and part ownership of the PA and it is quite easy to get towards that figure.
If I was that worried about it I'd get it insured. I think last time I looked into it it was £50 a year.
Good advice. I have had insurance in the past although gave up when I went down to the Squiers. I think we'll be giving that venue a miss for future bookings but some of the bookings are a little on the less "fine dining" side of pubs. -
Ex-bands - your presence in promo and merch
Cat Burrito replied to NewDad's topic in General Discussion
Not really an issue at our level. Even with my bigger band, we're talking a few quid at most. I think websites look best if you are up to date but I have no problem with a few older videos / photos / recordings showing what the band once was. -
We played one of the roughest pubs in town last night and I worked out my kit was worth nearly £4k. It was a concern and at one point a drunk guy leaving managed to knock over our PA head (which nearly started a riot!). In the past I have known players buy cheaper Squiers, just to gig at the rougher shows. My take is that I have some nice basses and they are meant to be played, but we really did watch the kit like a hawk. The rest of the band have good gear too. Just wondered what the general feeling is on this.

Funny (but positive this time) Rickenbacker video
Cat Burrito replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
This is great as well
He's very cool, the triple necked acoustic bass quip is very funny. And I love that Dictator rig. -
After ranting Dave's video proved such a popular thread on here, I thought I'd share this as this guy made me laugh twice in this short video. I've not come across him before but he is certainly a character. I love the bass too.
Mr Health and Safety would like to discuss that plug socket though...
Ha! I thought about photoshopping that It looks worse than it actually is.
Also, Rick-o-sound or mono? I'd be all over that split signal myself!
Glorious Mono. I had the two inputs on my old bass and whilst it's nice, I found I didn't use it.
thread needs more Sneaky Pete
I couldn't agree more. He's a regular on my bass playing Instagram page.
Are you thinking of Stinky Pete from Toy Story?
Sneaky Pete was the pedal steel player from the Flying Burrito Brothers. After the music industry he worked on a few films (like Empire Strikes Back) and his playing can be heard on John Lennon's Mind Games. Sneaky Pete the cat has a less impressive legacy. Eastwood EEB-1 Sunburst bass WITHDRAWN

Okay, so technically this was a few weeks ago but I was playing it, not posting about it! Plus there was another wave of anti-Ric commenting on here so I laid low. I owned a Mapleglo Ric at the height of my GAS but sold it on as it wasn't getting played. Having a much smaller arsenal of kit now and having spent the last 15 months playing in a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band, the prospect of owning a Rickenbacker was becoming an option again. My good lady found them a bit flash but I notice the stylings of the special models (4003s) have dot inlays and no binding which looks more 60s-ish, to me at least. It needed a set up but sounds and plays great. Owning a Gibson Thunderbird, my two thru neck USA basses couldn't be more different and offer some nice variation. And for any Ric haters, mine's guarded by Sneaky Pete, the one eyed mad cat, so pick your battles carefully!

The low end is incredible and I actually (for the first time in 30yrs) turned up the treble on my amp to compensate. I've certainly not had any issues with my sound.

What's the signal chain for your core tone?
Cat Burrito replied to Painy's topic in General Discussion
I never used pedals for almost 30 years but last year added a Tech21 Samsamp VT which I love so much I leave it on all the time. I have a Boss Tuner pedal and I added a Corona Chorus pedal for a couple of slower tunes. I'm always plugged into an Ampeg rig and the bass is probably my Gibson T-bird but I'm equally happy with my Ric 4003, a Fender or my Hofner Verythin longscale. -
Earlier on this year we rehearsed in the next room to Chumbawumba. And I once bought an old Ampeg SVT cab that was reportedly ex-Wurzels. I'm quietly confident that I must be at least top 3 in the ranks for impressive name drops today!

Cool or confused: something from Japan for the Thunderbird crowd
Cat Burrito replied to kumimajava's topic in Bass Guitars
A bit too modern for my tastes. The Ovation style headstock mixed with the Fender P-J style pickups all look a bit wrong. I don't mind the colour or the fret markers though. -
"Dad, I want to play bass, who should I listen to?"
Cat Burrito replied to interpol52's topic in General Discussion
I find if I push my tastes too hard it backfires. I was delighted when Martha got into Elvis but I had to quit whilst I was ahead. Only yesterday I was showing her some Ramones songs and playing along to show that it would be easy to get her started and she replied with "I think I'd rather play guitar than bass!" My heart shattered, slightly -
Opinions/advice on our bands confederate flags please
Cat Burrito replied to Les's topic in General Discussion
However people stand on it, 5 pages of conversation plugging your band when the post is only a day old is good going! I'm of an age where I loved the General Lee and watching those Dukes of Hazzard on TV as a kid but the world has changed. I don't think it has any negative image in the North of England but it has become a contentious symbol in the US. So were you to keep it, just don't go to the US on tour! Personally having played on the Americana circuit for about 15yrs I always avoided it because it just seemed a bit too obvious but then plenty of bands of all genres rely on popular images that work for the genre. -

I had this on pre-order from Amazon but saw it on EBay a lot cheaper. If anyone is thinking of getting it, it's good. My early assessment is that it is crammed full of loads of great colour images and lots of info. I'm sure that there are some on here who know more about Rics than me but I thought it was £15 very well spent. I never saw the first edition and this being a second edition, I'm afraid I can't comment on what is new.

Instagram reveals the most self indulgent bass rig ever
Cat Burrito replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Thanks SICbass - I found some more pics here https://www.talkbass...ge-rig.1120617/ It seem to be a fairly old story. -
I'm another former Photobucket user who, upon advice on Basschat, defected to Imgur. I prefer it massively, although I don't host many photographs.

Should I cancel gig I am going to for my bands gig?
Cat Burrito replied to markdavid's topic in General Discussion
I depends on the gig / situation but if you said and want to go, I'd remind them of this. If you are not that bothered, it is less of a deal (I've let tickets go for gigs before) but if they are going to regularly be silly like this, best you find out now. -
A very cool share, cheers.

This kept coming up on my Amazon recommendations. The lengthy wait put me off but perhaps one for the Xmas list.
