1. The low end is incredible and I actually (for the first time in 30yrs) turned up the treble on my amp to compensate. I've certainly not had any issues with my sound.
2. I never used pedals for almost 30 years but last year added a Tech21 Samsamp VT which I love so much I leave it on all the time. I have a Boss Tuner pedal and I added a Corona Chorus pedal for a couple of slower tunes. I'm always plugged into an Ampeg rig and the bass is probably my Gibson T-bird but I'm equally happy with my Ric 4003, a Fender or my Hofner Verythin longscale.
3. Earlier on this year we rehearsed in the next room to Chumbawumba. And I once bought an old Ampeg SVT cab that was reportedly ex-Wurzels. I'm quietly confident that I must be at least top 3 in the ranks for impressive name drops today!
4. A bit too modern for my tastes. The Ovation style headstock mixed with the Fender P-J style pickups all look a bit wrong. I don't mind the colour or the fret markers though.
5. I find if I push my tastes too hard it backfires. I was delighted when Martha got into Elvis but I had to quit whilst I was ahead. Only yesterday I was showing her some Ramones songs and playing along to show that it would be easy to get her started and she replied with "I think I'd rather play guitar than bass!" My heart shattered, slightly
6. However people stand on it, 5 pages of conversation plugging your band when the post is only a day old is good going! I'm of an age where I loved the General Lee and watching those Dukes of Hazzard on TV as a kid but the world has changed. I don't think it has any negative image in the North of England but it has become a contentious symbol in the US. So were you to keep it, just don't go to the US on tour! Personally having played on the Americana circuit for about 15yrs I always avoided it because it just seemed a bit too obvious but then plenty of bands of all genres rely on popular images that work for the genre.
7. Topics merged....
8. I had this on pre-order from Amazon but saw it on EBay a lot cheaper. If anyone is thinking of getting it, it's good. My early assessment is that it is crammed full of loads of great colour images and lots of info. I'm sure that there are some on here who know more about Rics than me but I thought it was £15 very well spent. I never saw the first edition and this being a second edition, I'm afraid I can't comment on what is new.
9. Thanks SICbass - I found some more pics here https://www.talkbass...ge-rig.1120617/ It seem to be a fairly old story.
10. Well I like it (as long as it comes with a road crew!)
11. I'm another former Photobucket user who, upon advice on Basschat, defected to Imgur. I prefer it massively, although I don't host many photographs.
12. I depends on the gig / situation but if you said and want to go, I'd remind them of this. If you are not that bothered, it is less of a deal (I've let tickets go for gigs before) but if they are going to regularly be silly like this, best you find out now.
13. A very cool share, cheers.
14. This kept coming up on my Amazon recommendations. The lengthy wait put me off but perhaps one for the Xmas list.
15. He's not a great advert for his stress bracelet, is he?
16. On the plus side, it's not the end of the world if you break a string
17. I don't remember these at all but if you google them, this thread comes top!
18.
Am I being a Victor Meldrew here?
Possibly a little bit, yes. I've spent 30 years playing in original bands (still do) and more recently over the last 10yrs have had covers side projects. It's really stretched my playing. I've seen plenty of originals bands that aren't very original at all & as stated a LOT of classic artists from the 50s / 60s regularly did covers - not just Beatles / Stones but look at the Stax / Motown acts or the early pioneers of rock 'n' roll music who all did each others songs. If the world is full of covers / tribute acts, start your own band and build it around what you want. If it is good, people will come to you. It's what I have done in the past and at times it has been hard work, but rewarding & it has meant 30yrs of always playing in the bands I want to be in at that time. I'm afraid that I've never understood the covers vs originals debate. Music is either music you like or don't.
19. I used to admire the TE rigs in the 80s and 90s (I thought they were still popular then, but not according to the OP). The ads were always in Bassist magazine. However the gold standard for me was always going to be Ampeg which is what I've used for the last few years. I'm sure there are better and certainly lighter rigs out there but I can't quite shake the teenage dream. TE was like the cool MkII Cortina but Ampeg was the American muscle car.
20. I'd hate to take my gear to him. Funny for a few minutes on YouTube but I bet in real life the novelty would wear off.
21. Price Reduction to £180 as I've gone from thinking I could sell this to actually needing to fund my last purchase!
22. Having been on that circuit for 15 years, play what you like! The classic is a flatwound strung P-bass (or an upright) but we gigged this year with a guy who had a Rickenbacker 4001 and I've taken to playing my Gibson Thunderbird.
23. I don't know about "better" but Facebook has groups that sell in Marketplace, and then there is Reverb, EBay and Gumtree. Those are the ones I look at.
24. Personally I adjust my playing technique to fit the song and try not to get too focused on kit.
25. Literally a stones throw from my old flat I had in the 90s. I'll check it out next time I'm in Bath.
