1.
Coming over all Nikki Sixx on us eh, Tim?
I was thinking of Sami Yaffa in Hanoi Rocks, Nigel Mogg in The Quireboys or Kelly Nickels in LA Guns. Classic sunburst was always a bit too traditional for Motley, no? I guess him & Pete Way are the two people most would associate T-birds with though.
2. Interesting week the other week, I spotted a "Gibson" Thunderbird in a store (that I'll decline to name). I had a go and liked it but worked out it was priced incorrectly - they had it down as something it wasn't, having taken it in as a trade. I did some research on my phone and for the first time in my life haggled a price (in this case half price) and bought it. I liked it a lot, gigged it and decided to get an actual Gibson one, rather than the bolt on necked copy. Gibson are discontinuing the Thunderbird and they aren't as readily available as they were. I found one an hour away so got up early to get to Wembley Music this morning. I figured try before you buy when spending £1000+. The second I picked it up it was light and felt good. I plugged it in and bam, I knew they'd be selling it today. Growing up in the late 80s some of my favourite players played a T-bird and I really liked the idea of owning a proper one myself. So the new addition means I will be reigning in my spending for a while but totally worth it. A bit different after 30 years of mostly Fender but it now means all my basses quite literally cover all the basses when it comes to retro rock. And it certainly has a rock star cool about it.
3. Mine was a late 80s MIJ 50s Fender P-bass. Funnily enough my current bass is a newer version of that model but vintage white rather than two colour sunburst. From the original bass I do still own the pickup and the pickguard. I'm not really sure how or why they got kept and although I'm pleased I have them, I have no plans to ever use them.
4. They are a bit brighter new but do settle in with playing. If you still feel that way after a couple of sweaty gigs I'd investigate the fakes side of things but generally they settle down.
5. I had a Wix page and whilst I found populating the site remarkably easy I really struggled with our bandname dotcom being used. In the end we wound up with two sites and double the work for me. I think the problem stemmed from my limited knowledge and not buying the domain name from Wix. Good luck.
6.
Some other BC'er must have fitted flats on their Classic Vibe.... anyone done this?
Yes, done it and no issues. Obviously if you are changing gauge I'd get a set up but it shouldn't be an issue and if you look after your gear it certainly won't damage the bass.
7. At the height of Britpop we used to do Common People in the style of Pretty Vacant.
8.
oh dear, is this really the same bloke that made one of the best British Rock and Roll records (Move It) it's been downhill ever since, his voice is just too damned polite
100% agree with you.
9. I would assume most people listen to the song but with a keen ear on the bass.
10. Not at all but I do try to look after them & when selling on people always comment on how good the condition is. They're just tools of the trade though.
11. I started with a 2nd hand Peavey combo that stuck with me for years and years. I always dreamt of Ampeg because all the players I liked at the time advertised them in the magazines. I moved onto Ampeg a few years back as I was working so could afford it. I did downsize to an Orange micro rig for a while before returning to Ampeg with a vengeance because I missed it. I do wonder how long it'll last as it is a really heavy rig and I am not getting younger BUT it just sounds fantastic.
12. In the early days I tend to write chord progressions / keys / intros / things to note on a postcard but very quickly I don't reply on anything. I'm pretty comfortable across all the songs in my bands.
13. If I may just steer this topic back on track a little - There were a few rock stars who, for whatever reason, weren't subject to formal complaints around (or since) Op Yewtree despite high profile relationships with young girls. Whether your view is that of "predator" or "different era" I think as this is a bass forum the thread would be better suited as an opportunity to discuss his playing rather than anything else. Nobody wants potentially libelous comments. I say this knowing it is of course a potentially sensitive subject for some.
14. I've noticed online recently bass players seem to be the new drummers when it comes to jokes... as far as I can tell, if you don't value the roles of others in a band you don't fully appreciate music. I'd love to be a good drummer (it was my first start in music and despite a pro drummer Dad I was terrible!)
15. I think the vast majority will encounter issues with paid work clashing with bands. Even rehearsal can mean I spend a day thinking "I hope I don't get off late tonight!"
16. Walking with my Angel is my favourite - a great tune.
17. I saw him 5yrs ago and he was finally starting to look his age. I think he is criminally underrated by both bass players and his ex-band. The last thread on him was just teasing him (about 6 years back) and he's a very solid, understated player who can be very tasteful when allowed.
18. Reminds me of my attitude when I was in my late teens / early 20s. I thought it was going to be sillier. Good luck to them, although I suspect at least one of them will be a customer services manager inside of 10 years.
19. Rick Danko - The Band didn't hit the radar with me until my late 20s and that was despite The Black Crowes referencing them in my teens when they were my favourite band. A shocking oversight on my part. Also despite Mum's really cool record collection, Curtis Mayfield's bass player Joseph "Lucky" Scott was also someone who managed to avoid me until adulthood.
20. This is totally my dream band and it will happen one day. Pipeline. Red River Rock. Tequila. Let There Be Drums. To many to mention.
21. Too many "bits" that jump out from several songs rather than one piece in particular. And it would change every day too!
22. Basses do hold the tuning much better. It depends as well on string bending, vintage gear and heavy rhythm playing. So long as it is on mute I don't think it is a problem- obviously coupled with talking to the crowd whilst it happens so you don't lose them.
23. For me it's purely mood dependent, although I naturally default to a Precision - I've spent months and occasionally a couple of years on something else just because the mood has taken me.
24. A lot go through this (me too!) and it is a form of addiction. I'm 1,000,000 times better than I was but even now I do have to watch things. It's nice to get new things but it isn't the be all and end all. I did the same thing with a Rickenbacker and spent 3 years on a Squier to prove I had calmed down. Three mid range basses is plenty for me now but I do occasionally have a window shop.
