1. I haven't gotten nervous in 25years. I usually just go for a pee these days #menofacertainage
2. I've always loved this, both in terms of vintage tone perfection and performance. I'm guessing it's a session player but does anyone know who it is? Also what the bass might be? It sounds very of the era.
3. Great story and he's right about that bass - sometimes I feel that the internet has turned us all into a bunch of whingers! A wider strap stopped that problem on one of my basses.
4. People always buy used flats on here so it is surprising just how often this question pops up. The Fender ones (mentioned already) are both inexpensive and good.
5. I like the Portaflex stuff personally https://www.absolutemusic.co.uk/ampeg-portaflex-pf-210he-2-x-10-bass-cabinet.html?source=shopping&sku=apgpf210he&gclid=CND_7fv80M4CFQcq0wodqiUNLQ just under budget.
6. I've been admiring the Memphis Kat for a while now. I saw it on YouTube.
7. I have a bracelet made from bits of lava from Mount Vesuvius that I bought on honeymoon this summer. It works better on jewellery, trust me. I hadn't been thinking "this would look good on a bass".
8. Once onstage back in the 90s. I was more of a pick player back then (with a bad right hand technique) and it was the E. Never done it since.
9. I had this on an old Jag bass. Ebay normally does decals from a few sellers... like this one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Awesome-Custom-Racing-Stripe-Decal-Sticker-for-Guitar-Bodies-10-colour-options-/182065724234?var=&hash=item2a63f67b4a:m:mZfT8S28F0Sl57N0x5pM73g
10. It's essential that a balance is struck. We have a set agreed number in a fairly small house so if something comes in, something goes out. It's nice to do things at together too rather than stockpile unplayed instruments and it took me a previous marriage to get that! My last two basses were purchases actively encouraged by my current wife. It was worth the upgrade... and I'm not just talking about the basses!
11. I took 2 basses on tour recently (6 dates going right up into the Highlands so I thought better safe than sorry) but since the 90s I have just taken the one bass out. I have spare strings etc so if I broke a string or similar I could rectify it in the time it takes to do an acoustic song.
12. It depends on the band and the circumstances. Normally split equally but if someone cancels for good reason we cover it. Also band members who travel further sometimes pay less (1 band I play in lives 2hrs plus apart). If someone is just late off work then they'd be expected to cover it.
13. I saw a completely amp-less band the other week. 4 piece - vox, gtr, bass, drums, with multi effects through the PA. A competent but uninspiring function band. The drums and bass sounded "okay", the vocals were a little lost and the guitar sounded especially weak. I appreciate it's one example but I didn't like the set up.
14. I've taken to playing Kiss' Torpedo Girl at soundcheck recently. No idea why, other than it's a fun bass part.
15. I like the look of these uke basses but if you go all acoustic, anything other than an upright gets lost in the mix. Just from a space saving point of view I'd pitch for the uke, assuming you'll always be plugged in.
16. Having come off tour, we played well every night. So here's 6 entries in one; Leicester - Great stage, great sound and as near perfect as any show I've done. Edinburgh - Hot, sweaty. Great support band. My debut in Scotland. Inverness - Acoustic double bass show. Once we got the loud drunk guy to quieten down, superb. Stornaway - Rivaling Leicester for stage and sound. Did well selling merch. Tartan Hear Festival - Great crowd dancing in the rain. Retford - Played a real church. Amazing sound and stage.
17. Many of us operate in more than one band. It's fine as long as you are straight with bandmates. I, like many, operate a first come first served policy where whoever books me first has me. People always worry about gigs clashing but I don't think I've ever really had that happen. Maybe just once or twice over all the years I've juggled bands. Learning songs is easy if you practice regularly (I found it harder in the old days where I spent more time GASing on GAK or yapping on forums!) Songs aside, assuming this isn't paying your wages I would go with where the fun is if picking between the two. Or write down the strengths and weaknesses of both bands and then weigh up the pros and cons from there.
18. Last night I played (for the 3rd or 4th time) the venue with the worst reputation in town. It just doesn't dawn on me to take cheaper kit because nowhere is *that* bad that if I'm sensible it would get stolen or trashed.
19. I'll start the ball rolling with Teisco but I'm not 100%
20. I had a guitar gig with The 58 Shakes. My playing time recently has all been bass so looking at 2 sets of rock 'n' roll where I play 85% of the lead was daunting. We haven't had the whole band in the same room for 6 weeks and all of us were saying they were rusty. The first set went well which usually is an omen BUT incredibly the second set was better. And our album is back from pressing. Result!
21. Online and specialist shops. I pretty much wear my stage gear all the time. At 22 I looked like a rock 'n' roll star. At 43 I look like a mid life crisis.
22. We played the Convent in Stroud which must be a contendor for the most beautiful, friendly and professional music venue ever. They even stream the show live with a 5 camera production team. I'm still speechless.
23.
Stornoway? You're touring the Outer Hebrides? Respect!
We even made the local paper! 24. I too think it's still early days. It was the first gig. Practice and vary your practice - it takes a few gigs to settle in.
25. So last night was a triple whammy of new things - 1) I was back on the Hofner with my long scale version of my old "bass that got away", 2) I debuted my Ampeg head and it sounded *sweet* and 3) against all common sense I flightcased the amp so had fun and games getting it in and out of the car! I've been really back into playing so practiced like crazy ahead of the show and consequently I don't recall making a mistake all night.Who knew, practice does help One minor niggle was we'd given up our backline as headliners and one band who I won't name were so up themselves the bassist just assumed, didn't thank me and didn't treat my kit with any respect. If I play with them again he can go through the PA. Needless to say they disappeared the second they finished playing. Thankfully the other band were very cool.
