1. In 28 years of playing, well over 20 have been with a Precision so I'd say that BUT all have their place.
2.
The squier VM Telecaster bass and the Modern player Tele bass (with two pickups) both seem to have bitten the dust very early.
It's strange but 50s style kit never seems to stick around too long. People rave about things like the 51RI bass but they just don't sell.
Those early single coil pickups are prone to damage. I had a paisley pink one and the E string got caught under the rim of the pup and snapped it in half.
I'd never heard this and it's certainly not my experience. I don't doubt it happens but maybe not *that* common?
3.
Two versions - one with a single coil, quite agressive. Has a certain charm. The later version with the heeeeowge Seth Lover-designed humbucker can, IME, only be heard by moles and earthworms.
And to be clear I only use the single coil versions for that reason. I roll back the tone which I can't imagine Roger would like
4. Effectively a prototype to the P. I use them as my main bass and have done for years. The pickup has it's own charm. Maybe like marmite but they work for me in any band I'm in.
5. This is an absolute bug bear of mine and the only time I really properly speak up! It's particularly frustrating on the occasions that the massive area of stage is allocated to the shrinking violet of a guitarist who is more fixated on chord charts than the audience!
6. My 50s style tele partscaster and my 50 strat in Daphne Blue, pictured with my modified Fender Blues Jr
7. I had one around 2004. It looked the biz but the pickups were so lacklustre it was pathetic. The choice was either upgrade the pups or sell it on. I opted for the later. A shame because it looked great. That was during my massive Epiphone GAS phase and I was a fan on most of the range. A disappointment. Try before you buy. Hopefully they've got better since then.
8. I can't help with modern (90s onwards) country but the P-bass with flats / foam is what I would favour. Or an upright.
9. Mickey Mouse Christmas Club. Some kids music I don't mind but the sheer repetition in which it gets played in my house makes for hard work at the best of times. The worst time was on a New Year's Day hangover.
10. Les Claypool's bass has that headstock that is associated with the 60s EKOs. They always remind me of the Grass Roots; https://www.youtube....h?v=5nZnqtDdsws I really wanted one of these a few years back and they were reissued. Nice basses, and a quirky alternative on the Hofner.
11. I had one and used it as my main bass for years. Some find the neck profile (wider and flatter) a little unusual but it is a subtle difference that you don't notice if you play a lot. I thought it was one of the best instruments I'd ever owned (& I've owned a few!)
12. I use the same set up and I've never had a rattle. Before you discard it as faulty I'd triple check you've attached the head correctly and also look to see if the rattle is coming from the head or cab. I like the tone personally and didn't feel there was a problem with the mids. Good luck trying to resolve it.
13.
The next poster had apparently not read and understood when I said that medium length strings were too short. Otherwise why would he recommend them.
I misread. My memory was telling me that I went one down from regular (I thought) but looking at the string guide I must have had rotosound long scale flats.
14. I did a show 10 days after cancer surgery and did a bunch of shows a few weeks after chemo on the upright bass. Everyone is different and ultimately only you will know. Best of luck for a speedy recovery.
15. I had one, it's medium scale that are best suited because of the bridge.
16. Andy - please check the terms and conditions of the site. You can only bump posts after 36hrs. There is a link in my signature strip if you need further clarification.
17. I am pretty much in the same boat as the OP (although don't get the reference to being able to visualise chord shapes - surely it's a listening thing?) I'd always played bass, then had a stab at guitar for a couple of years a few years back, returned to bass and then revisited guitar in the last year again. It has helped massively. I also think playing drums / piano or any other instrument won't hurt. My only gripe with Basschat is the anti-guitar comments that often come up from some members. It's all music and I don't like guitarists sniping at bassists either.
18.
Is this part of the Swindon Vintage and Retro weekend or just coincidence? Some stiff competition tonight! Vintage Festival
Tell me about it! We're on our own tonight but the singer & I play the festival tomorrow.
19. Tonight!
20. I guess I'd respond with; "Not yours. Not now. Not anymore. It suits me. I have my moments. Oh yes" At least they don't want transport!?
21. We played the O2 in London which I kept quiet but a neat little scoop for a band with just a small record label & a couple of records out. Needless to say we didn't headline but what a day
22. Forgive my covert SWAT team like tactics, I came in, saw Lee Rocker, met him & left. Excuse my manners, I don't believe I bumped into any of you... lovely day though.
23. I have tickets for JD McPherson's set when he comes back for his one off UK date this year. I'm also quite excited about seeing Lee Rocker at the Bass Show this Saturday.
24. As seen on US television too http://youtu.be/fjeeb-dQ-E8?t=3m16s (should start at the 3min 18 sec bit and it's stage right). I owned it from new & it never let me down. Great rig, good luck with the sale.
25. My 50s Squier Precision - all cosmetic with picjguard, covers and thumbrest. I actually like the pickup.
