1.
I'm just curious but in what way did it impact on the 2nd hand market?
It just pushed the prices up overnight to match the increase. A MIM Fender was going for almost £100 less 2nd hand and suddenly people were selling them for the retail price they'd paid 5yrs earlier. I guess it is just what happens, after all most old Fenders cost new a fraction of what they now go for.
2.
Chopped up and folded old style mouse mat, or a dishwasher sponge are popular options.
Ha! Beat me to it whilst I was typing. I got stuck trying to spell scourer!
3. It depends on how much of an effect you want and what height your bridge is at. I've used the foam backs from kitchen scourers and my main bass has a tiny section of computer mouse mat which works perfectly. Just playing around with household stuff usually finds something.
4. I think stuff sells, it just takes longer. The last couple of things I sold I was in absolutely no hurry, stuck to my guns and didn't bump very often and both went for the price I wanted. The crime for me was that Fender et al really hiked the prices as the recession kicked in which in turn impacted on the 2nd hand market. Thankfully this was at the end of my GAS phase so it didn't impact as much as it would have 2yrs earlier.
5. Sounds awesome, love the Windmill too but I'm still hungover from last night's jaunt
6. Hi Ben - Loz mentioned my old rig (just sold it recently after 4yrs solid gigging with it) and I had flightcased it. The lid came off and I'd take it out the tray and stick it on top of the flightcase shell. It was *never* a problem. I only sold it as I wanted the more period correct look of the Ampeg and the Orange stuff was worth more so I could get some money back. If I didn't have the flightcase you could always put it on an amp stand, a crate or a table. Job done
7. I'm a VIP member because I bought a case!?! I must admit the savings are huge and highly tempting but I just don't get the urge to buy like I used to.
8. As said bass is easier to get started on but once you start trying things like upright slap bass you realise it isn't a walk in the park. I have long stopped getting offended by the "easy guitar" comments. And let's face it, sometimes it is great fun to play a really simple line that is totally effective.
9. With any pickup replacement you need to ask yourself 1) what you are looking for and 2) what is it that the stock pickups are not doing for you? The CV stuff sounds good to me but there are plenty of improvements out there. If you want a more traditional sound you would be looking at anything 50s or 60s reissue but if you want a bit more high output then something different would be on the cards. Cost is also a factor. Personally I like the Seymour Duncan range (Antiquity especially) but then if I was playing something else I'd probably go for a different pickup from their range.
10. There are pictures of him playing upright bass too on some of the rockabilly groups on Facebook. I'm sure he could play a bit but I don't suppose he gave Billy Sheenan a run for his money
11. Either you had a dog or mine is a great one. I actually attempted my 1st review of mine here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230129-cabronita-precision-bass-a-review/page__p__2372375__hl__squier%20cabronita__fromsearch__1#entry2372375
12.
Was a bit surprised that it seems to be the only Fender amp that Roqsolid don't offer a cover for but I guess I can get one made.
I've had this a couple of times & if you give them the dimensions they'll not only do one for you but also start to list the model as one they do.
13. I started on a 4/4 bass which I didn't realise until I really got into it. I sold it on and moved to a 3/4 which has been a bit easier when it comes to sharing / borrowing basses. I'd stay in my comfort zone from now on in.
14. My band with the indie deal has a webpage that cost a few hundred and my knockabout band has a free site where we paid a few quidd for the domain name. I think the expensive site looks good but is a real battle to upload new information (designed by a computer programmer who forgets we're all simple musicians). The other band literally has all of 2 pages and serves a purpose. I agree that in an age of Twitter and Facebook they are less essential but both direct people to see us on the various social networking sites, can sell merch and have the capacity to capture those who don't tweet etc. I think they are a good idea. Googling cheap easy band sites or similar should get you started.
15.
Really? I don't remember it being all that much better than BGM is now. It too had its share of editorial bloopers and smelling pistakes, and fixations with certain manufacturers.
It just caught my imagination at the time and it was pre-online days so I remember sending off for ashtray covers etc that were advertised in the back. I'm sure I view it through rose tinted spectacles like a few others here.
16. These threads never get too far before someone mentions the early 90s when Bassist magazine broke off from Guitarist.... so I will, what a great magazine! I stopped my BGM subscription and the very next issue they had Lee Rocker on the cover and I kept forgetting to pick a copy up. That aside I really don't miss it. One article in over a year doesn't really justify it for me.
17.
Ronan Keating I'll get me coat...
Robbie Williams if we can continue this exercise in barrel scraping!?!
18. I don't know about "even more" famous but the Brian Setzer Orchestra did pretty well after the Stray Cats.
19. I don't think there is a definitive one but I like the old school looks of a bassman, an Ampeg or an Orange rig myself.
20. That feedback is very sneaky though, 100% in the last 12 months but a fair few red ones for so few transactions. I suspect he won't be happy unless this gets to a decent amount.
21. From my experience the good bands that I've been in, as a rule, naturally find the music shifts direction rather than suddenly deciding they aren't one thing and are now another. Personally I'd talk it through with them but it does rather sound like the writing is on the wall.
22.
where how?
I use Google Chrome and the ad blocker programme is free although they ask for a donation. It is good. I have to say I don't think it is *that* embarrassing - it is 2014 and people use online dating. And the other thing is this only predicts trends so you often get offered things you aren't remotely interested in.
23.
I think you'll find that these ads are served at you based on your previous browsing history on other sites. . .
They are. You can get ad blocker programmes incidentally.
