I was at another gig back around '93 and this guy in the audience was showing off a massive Twisted Sister tattoo he'd just had done. At the time I thought it was a little silly but periodically over the last 21yrs I've often thought back to him & wondered how he feels about it now.

I was going to say I used to take my ex-wife along but I guess that is a bit obvious. I too have capos, guitar strings and plectrums because they go in the kit bag and other players seem to struggle with that concept.

I can only agree with everything in Roland's original post. Between kit shares and house backlines it too works out about 40% but I love my rig. I guess every band is different.

Worth remembering that Leo Fender's original idea was that parts like necks etc would be easy to replace as and when they wore out. I changed a neck on a 57RI as I wanted to get a 62RI and it changed the feel of that bass. The original bass had a lot of sentimental value so it seemed easier to do that than sell it and buy a 62 or trade on here.

Great article although I assume the pictures are on Photobucket as they are blocked at work. I did a similar thing with a late 70s bass although being born a year before you I missed a trick... and I think the trick was haggling as I tended to pay asking price for everything. I'll check this thread at home to admire the pictures

A shame they don't have an option for tele basses but good fun all the same.

I've been playing mandolin since around 2005 and the one I've had since 2007 is stunning. It is made my Rally who are an Eastern budget make. It's all solid which helps rather than Fender's cheap plywood efforts. That said you can pick a plywood jobbie up cheap enough and sell it on if you want it to take off. The Ozark stuff is great but you pay more for the name (my Rally one was made in the same factory but doesn't have the name). Something solid top is definitely going to sound sweeter and consider a built in pickup if you fancy taking it around the open mic nights to busk along with some folk or bluegrass.

[/quote] This pretty much sums me up too. A decent well setup Squier is almost as good as a decent Fender but for a fraction of the cost. I loved my GAS phase but boy I don't miss it now

Careful how you pack things. The drummer slammed the door of our hired splitter van with my bass closest to the door. It snapped the G string but luckily didn't damage the bridge. This was prior to a gig in Sheffield but luckily I had my bass guitar. I think a bog standard gig bag is ok so long as nobody in the band is a fool

My parents had a mix of old rock n roll, country and soul. That means more to me as I turn 41 then any of the awkward choices I made growing up myself.

Happy. I think people can get too carried away with the search for tone. I find whatever amp I plug my bass into I usually get my sound.

I had a 50w one and it was great but I think there are cheaper amps that are just as good. I now use the Vox 15 Pathfinder which is better and cost a fraction. The resale on Orange Crush is poor so grab a second hand bargain if you can.

This was the most populated thread though so I thought I'd add my comments of James fandom by saying I bought his Ampeg Portaflex cab today. I knew he'd be reliable as I've known him personally since 2008 but it was good to see the Basschat sale live up to the worthy hype

Facebook & Twitter for both bands - the bigger band has everything else from Instagram to YouTube as well. I think for any band starting out it is a good idea.

I agree re Basschat that it wouldn't hurt to list the 74 Jazz in the Items Wanted - you never know. I've done the whole 70s Fender search and owned some real gems. Good luck and have fun.

I have the serious signed to an indie / records albums band and the knock about band. Neither manages to tread on the other ones toes and interestingly the knock about band rehearses much, much more regularly. I too believe in first come first served which is a pain if you get a better gig offer but you have to be strict or you'll wind up messing people around. I think most older musicians play in a couple of bands as a lot of bands struggle to get that full a diary. I fought it for years but it seems to be the done thing.
