7string (Mark) is a great guy, he'll do a great setup at a low price and he is a damn friendly bloke.
Yeah i just gave him a PM a second ago. Thanks for all the quick responses. Hopefully i will have a reply from him when i wake up. -
I found Jimmy Egypt to be a: unhelpful and b: an arsehole, although he's got a generally good rep. I've used Strung Out Guitars a couple of times, but I've always done most of my own work. I believe our own 7string offers setups now as well, maybe shoot him a PM? What is it that needs done- is it just bridge/truss rod adjustments, or do the frets need looked at?
Well tbh i just want someone more experienced to take a look over it and make sure it's all good since it was just built from various new pieces, i dont think it needs anything drastic done to it but i would be happier to know that everything is fine. Just I have heard that a bass thats not been setup right can hurt your technique and sh*t like that, since i still see myself as a beginner i guess thats what worrys me but i know it needs some pup height, bridge and truss rod adjustments ASAP and thats really at the top of my list. I think i will drop 7string a PM see if he could help me. -
Well as the title says i am looking for a place in glasgow to get my newly built bass a full professional setup (as i cant be bothered and would be much happier if i knew it was in safe hands) and wondering if anyone knows where i could get one and how much it would be. I was also thinking maybe we should have a sticky with names of places that do good setups with other info that people commonly look for ie tutors, luthiers, repairs so that its all very easy to find all with maybe a rating or a review so we who is best. Cheers

After 6 months of on and off work and a week of powering through it (was up til 2am this morning sorting out all the electronics and making sure everything was the way it should be inc. a slight setup) its done now and i gotta say im very happy with it. Finish might not be perfect with some primer showing at some bits on the side, the string retainer might not be perfectly horizontal, the pickguard is also not in the prime location but all these things i can live with. Well i have got all my wet and dry sandpaper (a bit too much if i must admit : 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500 and 2000 grade all at least 4 A4 sheets) and just waiting for my Autoglym and some copper tape and the body should be ready to pop everything in. Got through the 600 and 800 today and will get the rest done tomorrow morning and hopefully the Royal mail bring me my tape and Autoglym so i can get this thing finished by friday. Only one problem... the finish is not perfect, i think i may have taken bits of the gloss off and at one bit a tiny bit of primer can be seem. At this moment i dont care as i have ran out of paint and money to redo it. But instead if it annoys me in 6 months time after uni i will redo the finish and make sure i get it perfect. Apart from this everything is great. Thing that annoys me the most about this project is i started it way back in the middle of may...

I will be using a pair of Wizard "Gems" from Andy and it says on his site that when i order them i am to call or email and discuss what sound i would like out of them and I am unsure on the exact sound at the moment but will be using a Audere preamp with it. It was suggested for it to be maple/ash/maple but i would prefer full ash as i prefer the lightness of a ash body and the finish will be a stain or dye or translucent blueburst and will look its best with an ash grain and in the end i want it to be ash unless someone can give me a good enough reason otherwise. I have looked around here and talkbass and cant seem to find a solid answer to what wood would be best as i will be playing all genres of music but plenty of metal too as thats when a low B comes real handy.

I LOVE the squier jazz VM. If i wasnt already building my jazz i would have bought it straight away as it was everything i want near enough. Good luck and im sure with that Audere it will sound amazing.
-
Yeah i got the ultralites. My main concern is how the wood choices will make the bass sound since the wood descriptions on the warmoth website say maple gives a very very bright sound and that ash also gives a bright sound and i would like to get that thunderbird bassy tone.
-
I am getting a thunderbird body made for me and the centre portion of the body will be ash and the wings will be maple. I think this will probably fix most of or elimanate the neck dive. Does anyone know how this will effect the tone or anything else you can think of for this bass? As you can guess i dont really know much about wood for the body and the neck is a 1 peice P bass mighty mite maple neck. Thanks in advance.

Well this is my second project so far and i thought i might as well make a thread for it now even though its been making some progress for the last few months. Its going to be very similar to this made by Ric5 over at talkbass in the sense that its a fenderbird with a 4 string neck converted into a 5 string so i have asked him for some advice. The body is being made by our own shinhoman using Ric5's fenderbird from above as a template with a ash centre and maple wings with a mighty mite maple P bass neck which will be turned into a 5 string neck with a custom nut with hipshot ultralite tuners and hipshot string tree retainer. I will be using a Schaller 3D-5 bridge, Schaller strap locks, a pair of Wizard Gems pickups with an Audere preamp most likely the vol, bal, bass, mid, tre combo. ALL hardware will be black. The finish is most likely going to be a blueburst using manchester guitar techs clear blue nitro cans. I got a guy over in talkbass to make a photoshop of it Only things i got left to buy is the PUPS, Preamp, strap locks, the custom nut and paint. Only problem is the body cant be finished until i finish my jazz bass i am making as i need to work out what string spacing i am comfortable with as the 3D-5 has 16mm spacing but can move left/right 3mm and i am using the 4 string version for the jazz bass and want to make sure with andy at wizard pickups that the GEMS will have proper coverage with the string spacing and until then i cant tell shinhoman what the PUP dimensions will be for him to route into the body. Oh and i have no money to buy the £140 PUPS and $170 for the preamp just yet.

I am getting a custom thunderbird body made similar to this and was wondering if anyone knows the thickness for the wings and centre peice for a gibson thunderbird as i need both as the guy making it doesnt have the measurements on hand. Thanks

THIS Schaller 3D-5 bridge, Hipshot ultralite black tuners, maple Modded 4 string precision maple neck (like Ric5 from talkbass), Custom Wizard HB's, Audere 3EQ w/ Vol,Bal,Tre,Mid,Bass knobs, Ash body. Got it all planned tbh, just waiting for shinhoman to start the body and already got the neck, tuners and bridge. Some small things to work out like money and string spacing before it can be finished.

This is why i started playing bass....3

I lol'd at this. Maybe drop the bass and become an artist? -
Never owned a bass solo album. Not interested in them at all. As a bassist obviously I have massive respect for these guys, but I jsut find the sort of stuff they do on bass albums (Jaco especially) boring.
I agree fully here, always nice to see some mad skillz on a bass but i will always prefer a bassist that can throw in a little solo rather make the song all about the bass.

I think the money should only be taken once the item is ready to leave. Also if there is going to be any forseen delay i would like to know straight away. I bought a Traben off of GAK and although they never took my money they did change the shipping date every week to the next week. I would have much prefered "We dont have it but we WILL have it on xx/xx/xx" I wouldnt mind being told it will take 2 months as long as i knew from the start. In the end i emailed them about it and they told me they didnt know when it would get to them so i cancelled it.

At the moment i have some spare time and was wondering if there is any really good books out there to teach yourself bass. I have Bass for dummies but not really went through it yet. I just wanna learn how to do it all properly from scratch including theory. I already play of course but wanna set a better foundation. Just cant afford a teacher. Thanks

Come on. Someone must know how to make a mirror shine and what product to use.

I think the picture's are the same as real life. On steve's (manchester guitar tech) website iirc there is an example.
