Well i am looking to upgrade to a 5 string as there is a bunch of songs that need that low B that i would like to play. I tried a Fender Jazz 5 and the neck felt pretty wide (i dont have the biggest of hands so it felt a bit weird ) which i wasnt expecting, i thought it would be a nice thin and perfect (to me) neck similar to the usual jazz neck. I have been looking at getting a Warmoth Gecko 5 and they only come in 1 7/8" nut widths (same as the jazz 5) and now that i have tried the jazz not so sure if it would be very comfortable for me. So can anyone suggest any other 5 string basses as i would like to try as many as i can before i make my mind up. Cheers for any help.

Seen WWRY you edinburgh with my girlfriend (whos a HUUUGE Queen fan) and loved it. I like queen myself, some bloody good songs. Good luck with it.

I hate to say it... but no pic, no bass. PS: just would be interested in seeing it even though it is a smaller DB to scale.

Seen the brand name Spear in a local music shop and looked them up on the net and found this Anyone heard/seen one before? Definetly a unique instrument.

And The Award For Best Bass Goes To
Metalmoore replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
Gotta love jazzes, But to be perfectly honest i have never had any real time with a P bass as i fell into love with the jazz sound. Might just try one out next time im in a music shop. -
Anyone have any experience of them? Not just the warmoth bodies. Just wondering how the sound would be changed. Would it be similar to an acoustic bass?

I really have no idea but my geuss would be to wire it up the same as a PJ? Not 100% how a piezo wires up though...
I'm in and would be vaguely willing to help. Somewhere like Perth or Dundee is a good bet as they are equally inconvenient for everybody Some local knowledge is useful for venues etc. We could probably get my village hall but no one would find it
How Glasgow'ish are you? lol

Maybe now that we do have people that would come we can think about it more serious. Maybe start doing something about it once everyone is finished uni/school/college? I got uni til the end of may so would have to be after that anyway.

Well iv'e manned up and now tryin to build up some more strength in my pinky. Not as good as i usually am (im not that good anyway ) but starting to feel a little more natural.
-
Falkirk and stirling are good too, as long as i could get a train there without too many train changes (or none )
-
Its not the actual cut im having problems with, its the pressure of the string pushing back making the finger hurt
-
If there was one in moffat then "oops i missed it" but i was thinking more central scotland, Glasgow or edinburgh maybe where its easy to get to via train or bus.
-
All this speak of bass bashes has got me wondering, will we ever see one in sunny scotland? I myself cant set it up unfortunately but i am aware there is some scots on the forum and i would go if one did go on. Just really throwing it out here to maybe get the ball moving.
Well, I was once slicing some carrots up and the Grim Reaper suddenly appeared and started helping me with his scythe. I thought to myself "blimey, I'm dicing with death here"
i lol'd Might have to steal that one from you
Would Ric5 happen to be Jeff Rath? If so, he gave me the inspiration to mod a tired Rick bolt on copy into a 5 string with GB7 tuners and an EMG DC35 pickup His stuff is legendary
Yeah, seen his ricks and other 425 string conversion and was like this: How did you do it? Got any advice for me? Since you have done the conversion.

Well i cut myself yesterday cooking, sliced the tip of my index finger off (not as much as this may imply but it was sore ), plenty of blood but it only seems to be the top layer of the skin and already looks as if its healing. BUT the pressure of holding a string down is killing me, so gotta put the bass down until its healed. Plasters dont help either Anyone got any similar stories so i cen read them while it heals up?

If you have the money go for the squier VMJ, when i tried it out i was half way through my custom jazz build but if i had tried it before i had started to buy the parts i woulda bought it, plays and feels great (only had it for about 20 mins). Ask around here and im sure youl get some feedback on the VMJ or even a quick search will bring up plenty of info.

Always check and research into the item and the listing too. Gotta love jazz necks

Yorkshire Bass Bash 2010: Prize Draw Raffle

Where can i get 3 tickets? -
I have a cheap eBay 24 fret PJ bass (looks similar to a ibanez PJ i have seen) which im about to mod and the P is backwards but the DG is 135mm away from the 20th fret and the EA is 165mm away from the 20th fret. I also measured the DG 727mm from the nut and the EA 757mm from the nut. Could i get some measurements from the nut from anyone else? NOTE: thought i would add this to this thread instead of making my own as it may also help Ou7shined

TBH i have no experience with a router and dont have one (yet!). I'm not worried with how it will go as i was planning to make a P-MM bass and was going to buy a P body and jazz neck but realized i could just use this old bass and if something goes wrong on this cheap body i wont feel as if i have lost much money as its so old. So if i really do muck it up i will be buying a P body and a jazz neck, use the old body as a practice with the router and would be using the exact same parts.

Ok, So i will give a little history first, i bought this bass off of eBay for about 60 quid about 3 or 4 christmases ago after trying to get the same package for months (came with an amp, strap, soft case). Its a "Spider" PJ bass which looks very much like an ibanez that is getting modded over at talkbass but in black. It arrived with the jack inside it, so i had for fix that and solder some of the wires back onto the jack. It was amazing, sounded great, felt great so i learned on it until the nut broke while putting on some heavy gauge strings about march '09 so i tried to replace it and failed and in the end built my custom jazz but always went back to this cheap PJ bass with a 3 string nut when i wanted a heavier sound for some metal and tried replacing it with other nuts but could never get the right one. So lately i have been wanting to do another project, i got halfway through my fenderbird project until all i needed was the body and electronics and if you check out the thread you will see why its not complete and i have now decided that i want to breath some new life into this old cheap bass. Here it is after i took everything out of it: Spec will be: Neck: Cheap 24 fret neck Body: Cheap Ibanez look-a-like body Finish: Glossy black Machineheads: Black Y shaped hipshot ultralites Pickups: Wizard P and Wizard MM Bridge: Black Schaller 3d-4 Strap locks: Black Schaller Electronics: 1 vol and tone per pickup So my plan so far is to: 1. Strip the body to bare wood 2. Fill all the small holes in it left from screws (using the toothpick method probably) 3. Fill and redrill the neck pocket screw holes (squint and all different sizes) 4. Fill and redrill the control knob holes (also squint and had some trouble changing the bottom right knob since the one above was a little too close) 5. Fill the pickup routes (also squint and all different sizes and will be using epoxy since i will be rerouting in the same way as the bassgod76 from talkbass filled his) 6. Sand the front and back so its all level 7. Make a new nut 8. Work out where the new bridge will be 9. Work out exactly where the P pickup should be and route it (think i may keep it the reverse P as it would be easier and when the P was solo'ed i liked the bassier D&G) 10. Work out where to put the MM pickup and route it (unsure where it will go at the moment) This is as far as i can go with out spending much cash as i am still in between jobs at the moment but once this is all done its as easy as just buying all the hardware and throwing it in. As usual ANY advice would be great. I will be painting it in nitromors tomorrow so will see what kind of wood i have and hopefully it goes well.

Well due to the fact i cant get a hold of shinhoman (not been able to for a few months now) it seems it wont be getting made until i can get someone else to make the body for me. But it WILL happen...
