1.
Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled his feet. Bought on the basis that I could actually sing along with the songs in the key they are written in, but full of quirky and fun songs with some nice basslines too
Nothing wrong with that album. Great production by one of the Talking Heads, bass sat in the middle of the mix nicely. Nineties classic. ๐Ÿ˜Š
 2.
Bryan Adams' 'Summer of '69' -- the last line of vocal before the outro guitar bit is "me and my baby in a 69". All the lyrics sites will tell you it's "...in '69", but the 'a' is definitely there.
My band play this. I do backing vocals on it. During the outro bit which goes "it was the summer of 69", I occasionally change the lyrics to "and then I gave her a 69" and "my favourite number is 69" (same amount of syllables see?). No-one has noticed (I don't think). Don't tell anyone...
 3. "Well you're only 15, but you look good. I'll take you under my wing, somebody should..." "A Question of Time" by Depeche Mode. Dodgy as fcuk... But still one of my favourite bands ever.
 4.
You need to get along to that support group "Jazz Funkaholics Anonymous" My names Grassie, and I'm a Funkaholic.........
Ha! Sounds like an idea for a new thread. I'd like 7 Jamiroquai albums to be taken into consideration too...๐Ÿ˜
 5. I've had a similar problem with one of my bandmates. He's been asked on many occasions to turn it down, which he does, then turns it back up again. Lovely guy, he really is. Not a ego maniac or anything like that, can play well, his "sound" is not the best (to my ears anyway). But he has certain habits which make him one of the most selfish musicians I've ever played with. I feel your pain.
 6.
It is academic who is too loud. If your ears are ringing after playing you should be wearing ear plugs.
Ok, thanks Dad. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜Š
 7. Saw them at Bestival last month, they were very impressive I thought...๐Ÿ˜Š
 8. Our drummer has to hit harder than he's been used to in the past since he joined our band because of one of the guitarists fondness for playing loudly. It is the reason I bought an extension cab for my GK combo. It is also one of the reasons the next 6 gigs will be my last with this band. We play pubs and social clubs and every gig we get asked to turn it down, we have also said to the offending guitarist that he is too loud and everything else is being turned up to compensate. He's too loud therefore we're too loud. Just because we play rock music (a general term covering everything from The Beatles to Queen)I personally don't think it has to be loud to be good. A good mix out front and from the backline will always be more appealing to me than having everything turned up to 11. Looking forward to not having my ears hurt during a gig, and ringing like church bells for days afterwards.
 9. For me, tab has it's place as a tool for learning, but the demands for it in the comments section on YT videos are second only to the cretins who say "you shouldn't be playing with a pick".
 10. Played a 5er for, ooh, 8 years. Sold my US Jazz deluxe 5 to fund a new amp and went back to a four string. Have been back on a 4 for 6 years now and really miss having that extra string. Going for another 5er soon I think. Spector Legends look good, decent scale length, essential for a tight B.
 11.
No, I have none of the issues you have described. I am a working bass player , I do this for a living. The things your describing sound like things that use to happen in High School bands. I advise all those that only want to play music they like to forget about bands, at least working bands. I don't play music I like, but I'm gigging constantly. I play in a band with good musicians that are smart knowledgeable trustworthy people and have a solid book of good paying business. To be honest, it's sounds like you would be happier doing the bedroom home recording thing. Blue
Well, I'm not a working musician (unfortunately), it has always been a hobby for me, but one that brings in a little extra cash that comes in handy for holidays and things like that. If it was a full time job, well, I'd be taking whatever came my way and enjoying a lot more because doing something you love for a living is the ultimate aim isn't it? My attitude to my current situation is one of not having to put up with certain elements that go hand in hand with playing in a weekend pub band (I won't go into the gory details, but I'm sure you can use your imagination). I certainly wouldn't be so churlish to bite the hand that feeds, especially in the company of professional musicians on a public internet forum if I was a professional musician myself. As it's my free time I'm giving up every weekend I feel I have a right to make that free time as enjoyable as possible, as I'm sure you'd agree. ๐Ÿ˜Š
 12.
Well, hopefully you'll feel a little less ignored now EDIT: not a sympathy purchase BTW - I enjoyed the tunes, they reminded me of my old ProTracker days, only more polished with better samples and effects.
Thank you mate, I wasn't fishing for a sale, honest! Currently working on new stuff, motivation permitting, watch this space. ๐Ÿ˜
 13.
Hey Grassie, I usually just enjoy everyones great stories and knowledge vicariously without uttering a word but I felt compelled to answer you due to the fact you just described myself from music taste to current band situation, I found it uncanny, we are the same age as well, bizarre, lol. I had no idea I had a twin brother in the Isle of Wight! and I was just watching a Level 42 documentary the other night. You have impeccable music taste of which I would like to add Duran Duran, +1 on the Jamiroquai big Zender and Paul Turner fan, and of course Tom Jenkinson who makes me weep with musical impotence, lol. I thought I was the only bassist that was heavy into music production for electronic music, very into warp, hyperdub, hessle audio and ninjatune artists. It would be great to visit the Isle of wight and jam out on bass, get crazy pedantic about gear, grab a pint and look at pretty girls, alas while I have lived in Germany for ten years I am currently in a backwards, illiterate, cultural black hole in the United States, oh well, dare to dream anyways Grassie my bass brother take care!
Hey, thank you! I keep meaning to check out some Squarepusher, you've got me on it! As for your current location - your "cultural black hole in the United States" - well, dig deep my friend. There's always something under all the ultra-corporate, MTV-endorsed, flimsy, unoriginal nonsense that seems to be omnipotent at the moment. Hoping for a musical revolution, but not holding my breath...
 14.
'Drinking My Own Sperm' By Alvaro The Chilean With The Singing Nose
This thread should have ended right here. The rest of you have nothing to add.
 15.
Well, I enjoyed it
Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜
 16.
Oh you had roads then. We would ride the half hour round one way, then the half hour back, and have the thrill and excitement of avoiding the motorcycle sized potholes!
We still have potholes! They are now the size of small family cars.
 17.
Its fine there, they don't really have any form of language.
Ahem...! http://h2g2.com/entr...914705/T7272057 Edit: Just noticed you're from Somerset... glass houses and all that...
 18.
I spent many days there. In the summer we tended to get the bikes, go across on the ferry and spend a long weekend there camped in a field getting stoned. Although, tbh, it could have been anywhere, but it wasn't like a real place where they had police and people, and any form of society, so it was ok.
Oh, we have police now... And roads.
 19.
I think for a lot of people it is a compromise, but like any compromise, you have to be getting something out of it. In the group I am in, there are some really dull songs that i go through the motions (or get carried away and add too much), but at the same time, there are songs I really enjoy doing that are a challenge and do get my blood pumping, so its worth it. If you couldn't persuade them to throw some stuff in you liked, then you made the right choice. I am sure someone in the isle of Wight wants some other music playing, I mean there is absolutely nothing else to do there, so there must be lots of groups!
There are loads of groups! Loads of rock groups and acoustic groups! And that's it... Bottom line is - I have handed my notice in with my band (end of the year is my cut-off point), and as great a bunch of chaps you're ever likely to meet, they are extremely unlikely to agree to putting "Black Cherry" in the setlist any time soon. I can't really see myself in another pub-rock band again.
 20.
I suppose one could say, 'Well done for quitting a band because you didn't like the music,' and then 'Now find a band that plays a varied and interesting set that corresponds more with your personal taste.' Is that too obvious? Edit: Missed the bit about you living on the Isle of Wight. How far would you travel for the right band?
I think it's going to be more a case of doing something on my own. That's not to say I wouldn't in the future, but as far as travelling off the island to do something with a band... well, have you seen the ferry prices? Seriously though, I have a full time job here involving shift work, I have a family and all that entails, so to be off spending ยฃ50+ a time with sh*telink or Shed Funnel is really not part of my very complicated musical equation.
