  1. Pulled the trigger on a set of 45-100. Just put them on my JB and I am suitably impressed. Somewhat brighter than the Fenders I usually use, and I really don't feel like they're any stiffer than I'm used to either, so all good. Just need to gig them to get a real opinion of them. Thanks for the input you lot. Marvellous. x
  2. I love jazzes and have owned 5 (deluxe USA Fender 5, Fender Mex, Sire V7, Squier Affinity, G&L tribute JB1) and have always played with both pickups on full with the tone either full or at 50%. It really is the best passive set up, and they cut through without sounding thin or brittle. I also love P basses but the versatility you get from a jazz is the deal breaker. 😊
  3. Hi all, I’ve recently gone back to flats on my Squier jazz bass, using Fenders which I really like. I want to try D’Addario Chromes on my G&L JB1, so can you lot tell me why I should (or shouldn’t) use Chromes? I know a lot of you swear by them, but what makes them stand out for you particularly, and what makes them worth £20 (at least) more than other brands? 😊
  4. Really not much at all. 2 pieces 50x50mm max should do it. 😊
  5. NOW SOLD Gallien Krueger MB210-II bass cabinet for sale, 2 x 10 speakers with switchable HF tweeter. I have used this a fair bit over the past 10 years and does show some signs of wear - I don’t know what material GK used to coat this with (it isn’t tolex) but it has a tendency to chip if knocked hard, and it shows white underneath the black finish. I have used black acrylic paint to touch up the various chips, but the cabinet is sound, no cracks or other major damage, all corners intact, just cosmetic. Anyway, these cabs sound really tight and punchy, and as anyone who has had the pleasure (!) of hearing me play through my rig will tell you, this coupled with my GK 2x10 combo sounds pretty monstrous, despite its light weight (a shade under 15kg). Selling because I've now got to a point where if I'm in a band where I need to use this cab to be heard, then that band is too loud and I need to preserve what's left of my hearing...! Compatible with any properly rated amplifier head. I’m looking for £250, here's the tricky bit - I'm located on the Isle of Wight and I really don't want to ship this for fairly obvious reasons, I can meet buyers at any of the ferry ports (Portsmouth/Southampton/Lymington/Southsea) if that's any good, at no extra cost to you.
  6. Hi all, Can anyone point me in the direction of a place where I can source a small sheet of black tolex? I need to re-cover a couple of corner patches on my GK combo but I don’t need it in the quantities most vendors sell it in. An A5 sized sheet would be more than enough. Cheers all. 😊
  7. Does anyone know what brand of strings Ibanez put on their SR305's? Only asking so I don't make the mistake of buying any - played for an hour on Sunday and now totally dead.

Are you saying that these strings were on the bass from new? It's worth noting that in this case, they may have been on the bass for months before arriving at your own paws :)

Try a set of XT coated strings from D'Addario :)

@Dood do you use them? If so what’s the lifespan like? I’m assuming you’re usually a busy man… 😁

Ive had Elixirs in the past, impressed with those.

Funnily, I've been using them on my teaching basses (thus no sweaty evenings lol) but I've recently put a set on a gigging bass rather than my usual Pro Steels. I have a gig tonight that might be a hot one, so I'll have some ideas over the weekend!
Obviously with all the cold weather = no sweaty mits, strings have been lasting ages, but, I do have hands that kill strings quickly after long drenching 2 hour gig sets, so I'd expect a hit on string life generally.

I've been using D'addario for many years and there's certainly other brands I have used that have died significantly faster.

Elixir are good strings, a good choice too.

  8. That actually makes a lot of sense, as I recently screwed the pickups down a bit more as they were a little high. Thanks man! 😊
  9. Afternoon folks, Some help/advice required here please... My BBG5A has developed a slight crackling noise whenever a note is played. Its almost like you can hear it in the background, but it is noticeable. Does anyone know if these basses have issues with the pre-amp or the pickups that might cause this? I've used contact cleaner on everything and replaced the battery, I've also tried two different amps and a handful of cables, but the problem persists. Any advice would be gratefully received. Cheers.
  10. Hi Greek, As you've had experience with these basses, maybe you could solve an issue for me. Mine has developed a slight crackling noise whenever a note is played. Its almost like you can hear it in the background, but it is noticable. Do these basses have issues with the pre-amp or the pickups that might cause this? I've used contact cleaner on everything and replaced the battery, I've also tried two different amps and a handful of cables, but the problem persists. Any advice would be gratefully received. Cheers.
  11. Got this last month from fellow BC’er 6feet7 - BBG5A. Not sure of the year, but possibly ‘97-‘98. Great condition for its age, bar a few small dents in the clear coat. My first 5er for 15 years or so. Sounds great through my GK rig. 😊
  12. I had a 300, mint green job. Loved it but for some reason decided to move it on (probably had my head turned by something else...). One that got away...
  13. That looks like a great modding platform. Stick me down for a blue one 'n all...
  14. Apologies for the wait guys, my PC has gone kaput. Currently trying to salvage important files from it, including artwork…. Will keep you posted.
  15. Nice list! Looks like that's the next project sorted then! 😁
  16. It’s a difficult one. Part of the remit I set for myself was that each bass had to be distinctive from the rest in terms of colour/wood combinations etc. I didn’t include JJ Burnel’s black and maple P for this reason because visually it looks the same as the Roger Waters one. The only deviation from this rule is the three sunburst/maple precisions (Duck Dunn/Sting/NWR), and I included those because even though they share the same colour combination, they are distinctive enough from each other that visually they don’t clash. I do love the idea of an all-female bass print similar to this and my last effort, so I think that will be my next project. 😊
  17. Hi all, Right - all those that expressed an interest in acquiring one of these prints please raise your hands. I’d almost forgotten about this until @mowf messaged me last week asking if he’s missed a print run. Life has (as it so often does) gotten in the way, but things have evened out somewhat, so again, if there is enough interest, I’ll get a run printed. Haven’t worked out a price yet (as I need a quote from the printers) but as soon as I get a final number I can PM each of you with details. 😊
  18. Having done a recent deal with 6feet7, I can say he is a pleasure to do business with, buy with confidence! GLWTS John.
  19. Just two… USA Fender Jazz deluxe 5er, 50th anniversary with the Suhr pickups, in crimson burst, sold it on BC to some chap from Littlehampton (I think) Ibanez ATK 300 in surf green, absolute beast of a bass, did the Stingray thing brilliantly. Thinking of moving my G&L Tribute jazz on, but I know that I’ll probably regret it at some point… EDIT: managed to find some photos. The jazz isn't a photo of my actual bass, but identical to the one I had.
  20. Me and wifey often go out to see live music. One of the local venues had a board outside with “Friday - free jukebox” written on it. Mrs thought Free Jukebox was a new band, and we should check them out…
  21. Wight Hot Pipes (coz we is from the Isle Of Wight and have a bagpiper in our ranks). I only joined back in October and the band has been around for a while, so the name was obviously already established. DuneBuggy is a covers band playing absolutely anything we bloody well like. Lots of names were suggested, DuneBuggy came from a POTUSA song. The name doesn’t refer to anything in particular, and is as random as our set list. 😊
  22. It is tempting! Just a shame I’m on the IOW…
  23. Do you have any photos other than the ones from Bass Direct's website at all please?
