1.
Don't know about the law where you live, but here in Norway, the customer is legally bound to be a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem (though admittedly, some customers "don't know" that law). This thread taught me to trust in dealing with the doc - not with you.
Well, we have a saying here in the UK - "the customer is always right" and also "the customer comes first." As I've stated before, it was the total lack of communication from Howard that was the problem - nothing else. I'm certainly not the only forum member on here that thinks the same way. As for your last statement... FWIW, it's totally irrelevant (to me anyway).
2. Quick update - I received my pickguard this morning, just as I wanted it, fits perfectly, Hope that's OK with everyone.
3.
Several weeks ago I offered to pass on Howard's number to concerned Basschatters. In that time only two people have asked. It would seem that some people would rather diss him on here, even though he won't read it himself. Not impressed. The guy offers excellent work at mates-rates prices. He has hundreds of satisfied customers but as soon as he experiences a few logistical problems people start sticking the knife in. Unbelievable.
I got his number from someone else on BC, so I followed that contact up with an offer of my phone number so that Howard could give me a call (seeing as I'm the one waiting for my goods, I didn't think I was being unreasonable). As I waited and heard nothing, at the start of this week I called him and had a pleasant enough conversation with him. It turns out that during the building work he was having done to his workshop, my address details got seperated from my order, so he didn't know whose pickguard went with whose address. He then told me he would get to work on it straight away (this was Monday). As far as I'm concerned, all I need to do now is wait for my pickguard to arrive. Conan, I understand from your somewhat aggravated post that you are actually friends with the guy, and I also understand that friends stick up for each other. However, you need to understand that I (and pretty much everyone else who has had problems with orders over the past five or so months) have never met him, let alone regard him as a friend. We have all paid (mates rates or not) for goods that we have not received, with absolutely f**k all contact, correspondence, phone calls, PM's whatsoever. So forgive us if we feel a little narked, but none of us have been "sticking the knife in", as you put it. If you feel pissed off on his behalf, fine, get on with it, not my problem. My problem is paying for something nearly four months ago and hearing nothing. Get over yourself.
4. I have a 2x10 combo which weighs 16kg. That in one hand, bass in the other, out the car, in the venue, plug in, tune up and Robert's your mother's brother! Gives me time to have a drink and watch the others setting up for the next half hour...
5. I was a disciple of the Jazz bass for years, and the thing that put me off P basses was the frankly terrible sound that a lot of indie bands seemed to get out of them - treble full up, no bottom end, just very flat sounding. I thought that's how they all sounded. Then I for some unknown reason, I started to get a hankering for one, completely out of the blue, so I bought an SX from my local shop. Once I'd got the action down to a playable level, I plugged it in as was blown away by the amount of bottom end and downright creaminess that I could coax from a bass that cost me £160. So I sold my jazz and bought a Squier VM precision and I'm done! I have two basses that sound as good as anything I've had before (including the USA deluxe jazz 5'er) that are so easy to play, sound great and are beautiful in their simplicity.
6. +1's for Flea and Chad, and Michael Anthony and Alex Van Halen Also: Mark King/Phil Gould Gary Beers/Jon Farriss Billy Gould/Mike Bordin Mani/Reni Robert DeLeo/Eric Kretz Stuart Zender/Derrick McKenzie/Sola Akingbola
7. Status S2... err... Classic. Nothing else looks like 'em, been around for 30 years. I think it qualifies.
8. Did Christmas get cancelled? I used to have one of those Jazzes (1996), lovely basses. Good blow-out sir!
9.
it was great to see him back on national TV, him doing a few of his well known tunes and a new one too, and still showing that 'ridicule is nothing to be scared of'..
This. After all the crap he's been through in recent years I'm chuffed for him. Roland Gift was good too.
10. This may need to be moved, so if any mods read this, feel free. I have a brand new set of Rotosound RB45's to swap. I got these as a freebie with my BGM subscription, but the gauge is too heavy for me - these are 45-105. I prefer 40-100. They are the nickel on steel roundwounds wrapped on a hexagon core. If anyone has a set of 40-100 steel roundwounds they'd like to swap for these (they don't have to be Rotos) let me know. Cheers and happy new year!
11. I got a year's subscription to BGM starting with the Glenn Hughes / Andy Fraser issue (including free bass strings), plus John Taylor's autobiography. Maybe the '63 Jazz bass will be next year...
12.
I spoke to him last Sunday on the phone.
What did he have to say?
13. I kind of know him a little. I've sent him a message, hopefully he'll pick it up.
14. If it was Avian Monkey Jazz Steampunk Funk, I'd be interested.
15. I like this thread... Reni (Stone Roses) - Drums Boon Gould (Level 42) - Guitar Jarle Bernhoft - Vocals Roddy Bottum (Faith No More) - Keys Now that's a band I'd love to be in...
16. I do like a bit of slap (MK, SZ, Flea), but I am a bit rubbish at it to be honest. I've never had to play in a slap stylee in any of the bands I've been in, but I do think it is a valid technique and not something that should be swept under the carpet and be ashamed of. The thing that makes me laugh is when you go on YouTube, and see all these berks with their LED's blazing away, with the same amp settings, FX settings and even the same string gauge as MK, just imitating him. I mean, good effort and all that, but really...
17. I started off with the drums (had lessons for a couple of years) and was inspired by the mighty Phil Gould (Level 42), as well as his more famous colleague Mark King. As I gradually fell out of love with the drums, I became more and more drawn toward the bass guitar and big fat bass grooves in general. I put off buying a bass for a number of years though, because when I was a toddler, I badly burned 3 of my fingers on my left hand, and the resulting skin grafts left me with restricted "span", so I thought I'd never be able to master the bass. It wasn't until I turned 18 and left home for college, (in glamourous Basingstoke) hooked up with a couple of musical dudes, one of whom had a P-bass. I tried it out and realised that not only could I play the thing, I blimmin loved it too, and promptly went out to the local music emporium and purchased a Sunn Mustang package deal. I then spent the next 2 years glued to this plank, my studies suffered and I've never looked back. Never fancied the guitar though, too much gurning involved...
18. Lost for words. As is the seller, obviously...
19. Are we being ignored? Feels like it...
20.
I would probably walk but take the vocalist and drummer with me, the guitarists are the easiest to replace anyway
This. Nothing else, just this.
