It's a 4 pot pre amp but does have a mid selector switch as mentioned in the OP so unless you just leave the mid switch in the control cavity or un-wire it completely so it bypasses the switch and leaves the actual mids to be controlled by the mid pot only (which is easy to do as I looked in to it). And anyway, bump!

My vintage modified jazz bass. As circle of fifths pointed out, the pickguard was the only thing that needed slightly modifying on the bit that joins up with the control plate. Mine is the VM '77 jazz which came with pearl blocks and white binding on the neck so I swapped the neck over with Dave (Nibody) on here for his one from his VM which has the black blocks and binding as I'm a huge Geddy Lee fan (but I prefer my blue pickguard) Then I added the official Fender pickup and bridge covers and they work a treat. I'm a "metal" bass player but I like using my Jazz bass for softer / less rock things that I play. Other things I changed were the neck plate as I fitted an official Fender "F" stamped one, Schaller strap locks, Graphtech PT1214 black tusq top nut, copper shielding on all cavities and skirted jazz bass knobs instead of the strat style ones it came with and a black plastic thumb rest. Currently strung with D'Addario chrome flatwounds 45-100 gauge. So here she is: Bass: £275 from Music Center, Bedford Schaller strap locks: Freebie thrown in as I always buy stuff from there Pickguard: £3 off ebay Pickup and bridge covers: £15 altogether from 2 users on here Neck: swapped with Nibody Fender neck plate (F stamped official one): £5 from ebay Copper shielding for all cavities: £3 for the whole roll, enough to do 4/5 basses with Skirted jazz knobs: £6 off ebay Black thumb rest: £4 off ebay D'Addario chrome flatwounds: Free off here (thanks guys!) Graphtech PT1214 black tusq top nut: £7 from strings and things Total: £318 and it's my go to bass for everything at the moment. By the way, yours is an absolute stunner CoF! I love the tort pickguard on it. Contrasts really well on the natural body.

[s]Hey guys I'm after an Aguilar OBP-3 pre amp for my Tobias so I'm taking out the Dave McKeen pre amp that's in it and selling it. The lay out for the pre amp is Bass/Treble stacked pot, mid pot with mid selector 3 way switch, blend and volume. It has a lot of bottom end and a lot of mids to it but the top end seems to lack a little bit for what I like. It's a beautiful slap tone on it and you can get a really deep finger style tone out of it. It does suit the bass really nicely but it doesn't suit me if you know what I mean? haha. The mid selector switch on it works really well and you can definitely notice a big difference when you change which section of the mids you want to boost or roll off. Basically, my understanding of it is that when the mids pot is in the center, it's flat so that when you roll it back or forward, it boosts or cuts the mids. Same with the treble and bass stacked knob. I'll be sending the pre amp with all the pots attached and the barrel jack connected. It's up to you what ones you do use and what ones you don't. I've had no issues from it since I got it. Oh, I'll also be supplying a wiring diagram with it (either digital or hard copy, your choice). It's pretty much just a case that I've always known what I wanted in my bass but couldn't afford it before and didn't have the time to wait for one to arrive from America (i needed a pre amp quickly as the old one in my Tobias gave up the will to live and i had a gig coming up that I needed to use that bass for as it was my only gigging bass at the time) so yeah, now I can afford what I want, I am going to get it. Simple as that. So yeah, the price I'm looking for is £50 plus £3 postage. Absolute bargain for this I think especially as all the pots are brand new and it comes with a proper barrel jack input. If pictures are needed, i'll upload some. Cheers Stevie[/s] SOOOOOOLD! STOP LOOKING, GO AWAY! THIS IS NO MORE!

What strings do you use on your P-Bass
StevieD_FenderP2009 replied to JayPH's topic in Accessories and Misc
Rotosound Swing Bass RS66LE 50-110 on my Squier P-Bass D'Addario Flatwound Chrome 50-105 on my Fender Steve Harris P-Bass and Fender 1987 checkerboard P-Bass Best way to do it for me. Especially when the flatwounds are broken in and mellowed out, they still have such a variety of tone to them -

Hey Gafbass, I've tried a Hartke VXL before but I didn't like it unfortunately. In fact, i have to use one in a 4x10 combo for most practises as it's what is supplied there and i can never get a tone I like from it. *edit* I thought the VXL was the VX series bass combos. I've just seen that the VXL is a pedal. Thanks for the recommendation though man. To the other guys, I haven't tried the Fusion yet but to be honest, I don't think I will. I'm just going to stick with trying out the Gallien 700RB-2. Sounds exactly like what I need to be honest. Well, everything apart from the effects loop. I wish it was switchable =/ Suppose that's fixable with a line selector pedal or something.
-
Thanks for the advise dude. I found out it's my cable. It had a split in it causing it to hiss. I tried 3 other cables and there was no hiss.
-
I'm pretty much sold on the GK 700 rb now. I don't want to sell my Trace Elliot as I do love it but it's not what I want right now so yeah, she shall be shipped off. What is the effects loop on the GK's like? Is it switchable as well? Also, I can't remember if I read that the pre amp is valve driven on it or not
-
Thanks for that Thom, I really appreciate you helping out with that info. As you can tell, I don't know much about GK's stuff. 2001rb, isn't that the 2000 watt version? if so, that's ridiculously powerful haha. Bet you can't even use it on 1 at home. If I am around derby, i'll be sure to give you a message. Thanks again dude!

Now the overwhelming choices here seem to be the Gallien Krueger 700/800RB-II and the sansamp to drive it. I'm not really thinking of changing my whole set up, i'm just considering changing the main core of it, the Trace Elliot (which is only a pre amp really. It's just lucky it has a power stage to it to power my cabs). If any one has a GK 700/800RB or Ashdown ABM500RC and they're willing to lend it to me in return for something, I'd appreciate it. Just so I could try one out and see if it's closer to what I want. I'd probably end up getting a Sansamp as well to go in my set up for some really gravelly tones. Especially as from what I recall, the Sansamp can be bypassed without any tone loss with a footswitch. Going over to what I said about Eddie Jackson of Queensryche, I looked in to his rig and the way he gets his tone is by aggressively finger picking his Spector/Fernandes basses which have been equipped with EMGs. He uses the typical hartke set up of the LH1000 and HyDrive 4x10/8x10 cabs with no effects. I would look in to getting a few pedals for it all but I'm trying (and losing the battle) to not go down the dark road of pedals. If I can get everything I want (apart from the Wah pedal) as a rack unit, I'll do it that way but that may change somewhere down the line haha. Especially the LoMenzo pedal, I do love the sound of that one. If I could afford an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro, I'd buy one without giving it a second thought as I love ampeg stuff but alas, £1400 is a bit out of my league.
Well going by your descriptions of sounds you like, Steve, and the type of music, I think we have a fair bit in common sound-wise. As a long time Marshall/Ampeg lover, I`ve recently transferred my affections to Gallien Krueger and coupled with a Precision, I think I`ve finally found "me". What I`ve found with Marshall/Ampeg is that I love the warmth of the tones, but once you add in any top end it seems to "ruin" the warmth, and just become too clicky/clanky. Whereas the GK has a different kind of depth to it that the top end just seems to sit so well with. You have the precision of the top end, but lose none of the thud downstairs. As such, the GK in my opinion has to be given a go.
From the looks of things, we are very similar in what we want tone-wise. I will say though, the speakers in my Marshall cabs (old school Celestion 12's for the 4x12 and Celestion 15's for the 2x15) don't seem to ever lose their top end but the 15's just pour out low end. Perfect mixture really. It's funny that you've gone from Ampeg to GK, normally you see people going the other way but that's enough of a recommendation for me anyway. Especially as all I use are Precision Basses at the moment (I do have plans to get a Spector Euro 4LX at some point) Sorry if I seem like I've ignored any one's replies on here, I can assure you I have read all replies and taken them in to account and I do appreciate the replies/opinions. I'll bear them all in mind too.

Hey guys I've been giving it a lot of thought lately but I've decided to sell my much loved Trace Elliot GP12 AH250SMX bass head. The amp is absolutely fantastic and I bought it because it's the one Steve Harris used on a few Maiden albums but since then, I've grown to absolutely love the thing but lately I've been going through a funny phase where I've wanted a more "Geddy Lee/Eddie Jackson/Rex Brown" aggressive tone which has sent me leaning towards an Ashdown or Gallien Krueger head but I'm not even sure on that. I've owned the head for over a year now and it's been gigged quite a few times by me. In that time, I've had it professionally serviced, re-valved with another Mesa Boogie pre amp valve, 2 switches replaced (they felt a bit loose to me so they've been replaced) and it's lived in my rack case since I got it. The green lights behind all the dials, EQ sliders and switches just look MEAN, especially in a dark venue. It looks like a radioactive beast behind you. The versatility of the amp is incredible. I used it for a gig which I needed a really smooth, mellow tone for and it did that perfectly then I used it with my metal band and it gave me the clicky, Steve Harris-esque cutting through tone. It's just that it's a little too polite sounding for what I want/need right now. The amp is in pretty much perfect condition but there's one or two scratches on the casing here and there from the previous owner (who I believe had it since new) and there's a little bit of a paint chip from the rack ears. As I said, electronically it's been recently maintained and serviced because I didn't want to take it out to a gig and have it break down (not saying it's prone to it, I just prefer to be on the safe side). It comes with the original EQ and Pre Shape switching footswitch which is in nearly mint condition too (it currently sits in my rack drawer as I don't tend to use it during gigs). Apparently these are really rare and worth a bit by themselves. I'll also be including a spare pre-amp valve just in case you want or need to change it. As you probably know, the amp has a 12 band equaliser with a dial for selecting how much of the natural bass tone you want dialled in with the EQ (I personally run it on pure EQ), 2 band compressor (separate high and low dial), EQ balance dial (for biasing towards more bass or more treble, I just leave it in the centre), fully usable effects loop (send and recieve located on the back with a filter to select how much of the tone you want effected but the actual effect loop dial is located on the front to dial it all in), active/passive switch, solid state/valve bias dial, tuner output, 2 speaker outputs, earth lift switch, voltage selection and lastly, a mute switch so you can tune/wait for guitarists to stop being idiots/leave it on standby. Price wise I would be looking for around SOLD (give or take a few) for the head and footswitch, Delivery would cost around £20 I believe but collection is welcomed so you can come try it out too. I'm based just in the middle of Luton/Milton Keynes/Bedford off junction 13 (Toddington) of the M1. You're more than welcome to come and try the head out as well. As for trades, I'd only be interested in a Gallien Krueger 700RB-II, Ashdown ABM500 EVO III RC, Ashdown Spyder 500 (rackmount) or Sansamp RPM pre amp (with some cash my way on the sansamp) Here's a couple of pictures of it in my flight case
-
I've done a couple of gigs lately where I've had to use my full bass rig but to me, my bass tone has just been too "polite" lately. I'm currently using a Trace Elliot AH250 SMX head rack mounted with a couple of effects (Aphex Aural Exciter Type 103A for harmonic overdrive, Yamaha SPX 90 MK2 for chorus, Behringer T1952 compressor/gate) but the head it's self just seems to kind. I bought the Aphex because I heard it's what Steve Harris uses to "grit" up his bass tone but he also had a custom built Alectron head which is a carbon copy of the HiWatt 200 so that's going to provide some dirt anyway. Don't get me wrong, it's added some grit but just not quite enough. It also doesn't sound quite full enough. My other little qualm with the Trace is that the effects loop is quite noisy (but that might be one of my effects processors doing that). To put it in to context, I'm looking for the sort of grit the likes of Rex Brown (Pantera), James LoMenzo (Megadeth era), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Ryan Waste (Municipal Waste), Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver) and Eddie Jackson (Queensryche). It's a properly aggressive sort of tone that still really cuts through a pair of guitars but backs them up when they're both doing a harmony or whatever. So then, my conclusion. I'm thinking of swapping out the head and changing it. I can't afford Ampeg stuff so i'm not even going to consider looking in to them. My main requirements of the head is that it's rack mountable and that it has an effects loop (preferably switch-able but if not, then boo-hoo and i'll get on with it). After looking around and watching a few videos, there's a couple of heads i've taken a liking to. These being (and with the players I know use them next to it): 1: Ashdown 550 Spyder 2: Ashdown ABM500 RC evo III (James LoMenzo) 3: Hartke LH1000 (David Ellefson/Eddie Jackson) 4: Gallien Krueger 700-RB-II (Duff McKagan - yeah okay, he uses the 1000RB-II) Or my very last option would be one I was thinking of ages ago. Get a Sansamp RPM and get the 700w power amp I was looking to get to power my cabinets. The reason I was looking at the Sansamp is because I'm a huge Geddy Lee fan and I know that's the one he uses to get that amazing tone he has. Plus, you can get them sounding nice clean or really gravelly! Any opinions or what not? Cheers Stevie

I just sold my Spector 5 string to Matt. He's a real pleasure to deal with and has a decent taste in music too. He messaged me about the bass and had paid for it within a few hours or so. I love when transactions go this smoothly! Thanks mate Stevie
Steve, I hope you have a Roadie!
Haha no. I just have my band mates who do all the lugging for me

Hey guys I've recently bought myself a Yamaha SPX 90 MK2 effects unit for getting a nice Chorus, Flanger and Phaser effect from but whenever it's plugged in to the effects loop of my Trace Elliot AH250 SMX pre amp, there's a really loud hissing noise even when the effects loop dial on the pre amp is turned off and when the output from the amp is turned off. As soon as you take the cables out of the Yamaha that go out to it from the Trace, the hissing stops. Is this a grounding issue? If so, how do I stop it as there's no ground lift switch on the Yamaha and the ground lift switch on my Trace does nothing. I really don't know what to do. I should note, everything is in a 20u rack mount set up with plastic gromits on the bolts and all is being powered by a Samson PB10 Pro power conditioner. Cheers Stevie
