Has anyone ever been asked to pay to get into their own gig?
woodster replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
The ska band I used to be in were 'invited' to play Guilfest in 2007 but only on the condition that we sell £1700 worth of tickets. We had a big following AND Madness were headlining along with The Beat and Terry Hall so it wasn't a problem shifting tickets to ska fans. We were invited back the following year but there were no other ska bands on the bill so we would never have sold tickets and turned down the offer. -
I use them too.... Here's some on EvilBay.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/10-NEW-rubber-washer...22297f2ffe7de4d

Loved trawling through this thread!!! Mine.... * Denotes current arsenal Kay 3/4 size - cheap, nasty but fuelled my interest. Squier Jazz - White with tort pickguard and EMG's - My first gigging bass when I was 13!! Jaydee Mark King in black - Hey, it was the 80's! Hated it though, gutless as fook but I guess it had THE sound Status S2000 - see above.... Fender P Fretless 1979, in natural - Should've kept it but wasn't really into fretless at the time. TE T bass - in green! Loved it but couldn't live with the colour...... Should've just re-painted it! Yamaha TRB6 - Had soundmen all over the world commenting on it's great tone... Not the most expensive or most exotic bass i've owned but one of the best. Chapman Stick 10 String - Seemed like a good idea at the time but just couldn't give it the time and patience it needed. Conklin Sidewinder 7 - As Public Enemy once said.... "Don't believe the hype" ..... rubbish! Overwater Progress Elite 7 - Everything the Conklin wasn't... and more!! Played itself. Fender Marcus Miller Jazz 4* - Does exactly what it says on the tin, awesome slap sound Overwater Deluxe J5* - Without doubt, the greatest all-round bass I've ever played.... Just perfect. EB Stingray 5 2006 ltd - Black/gold - The 'John Player Special' Hairy-aresed roadie at the O2 stood on it and broke it's neck!! EB Stingray 5 3EQ *- Black w/ matching headstock - Replaced the JPS bass. Squier Vintage Jazz Fretless* - For those Pino moments.

I spend most of my Working life doing sessions and I can't remember the last time I was given anything in advance. Most of the time, the producer and/or client will gave a vague idea of what they're looking for but it's usually a case of improvising a line over a chord chart and drum track. This will be met in one of 3 ways..... "what the f... Was that?!" "that's kinda it but......" or "that's it!" Know your genres coz you'll often be told the track's in a certain style or a certain artist's style. As long as you're good with making up basslines, willing to take criticism and direction and able to communicate and listen, you'll be fine.

I must admit, my reply after Taylor says "you wouldn't even carry your own bass" would've been..... "and your point is....?".
-
I was emailed it from a guitard friend. Apparently, Taylor's gig rider also requests... "A life size cut-out of Eddie Gomez, to remind me how lucky i am to be performing solo."

Need a great jazz bassist.....? Don't hire Eddie Gomez.... Note: adult content...
It all depends on what you want out of life. I know a load of people who went to Uni,who now have office jobs and are earning quite nicely and have a 'comfortable' routine of work, pub at weekend, holiday once a year. I may have a less consistent wage, but I've travelled all over the country as well as Europe and America, met some great people and basically had a lot of fun,all from playing music. Most of all,I'm happy and enjoying myself. I wouldn't want it any other way.
Couldn't have put it better myself.....

Mark 'bedders' Bedford's black/black/maple precision from the 1979 Top of the pops performance of The Prince. I had a poster of it on my wall!!!

Oh yeah! I supported RS in Sheffield in, ooh, '95 or '96. They were awesome live. Drizabone's Conspiricy album still sounds great today, classic groovy soul!

To the Pros - How Often Do You **** Up?
For me it's all about focus and discipline, and of course confidence. Focus for when you are depping,or recording. and discipline if you are in the pit on a long running show, its easy to get bored playing the same thing 8 times a week. [ so when you get the chance to dep it out and do some other gig - do it!] If you are depping for the first time or two, you will get away with the odd clam. If on the other hand you are on a regular show/gig and you keep droping clams, you will start to p**s of MD's and other muso's, Its the same in any profession - keep f**ing up and that equals the P45... I teach rockschool grades so I've got all the books, sample questions and stuff. Learning the set pieces is fairly straightforward, they're all in 4/4 and are pop, metal, funk, rock and roll and blues styles. The scales you need to learn are major, minor pentatonic, Dorian and mixolydian. The arpeggios are major, maj7, min7b5, dominant 9 and diminished 7. There is also EITHER a sight Reading test or improvisation test as well as general questions. The questions are theory, such as musical terms, note values and key signitures and there are also questions on the bass about mechanical components of the bass, tone adjustment and tuning methods. Hope that helps.
I was doing a gig last August at an outdoor festival nr. Durham. There was a T.Rex tribute band on with us,and I got talking to a guy who was with them - turned out to be Tim Gentle! I once bought a Les Paul from his shop (which I think was just outside Southend, maybe Rayleigh or Benfleet?-in Essex).
That's the one.... It was in Hadleigh, kinda halfway between Southend and Benfleet!! Good to hear Tim's still 'out there' .

I've had the same Paddy's gig, in the same venue, for the same landlord for 10 years running and we basically stick songs in the set from anyone with even a slight Irish link... As well as diddly-diddly favourites like Dirty Old Town, Lord of the dance and Mursheen Durkin, we do stuff by Saw Doctors, Van Morrison, Boomtown Rats, Thin Lizzy, U2 and The Pogues. We've also been known to slot in some Bobby O'Marley!!! Wear something green, say "to be sure" a lot and have fun!!

Is there a problem with Overwater at the moment?
woodster replied to Finbar's topic in General Discussion
Give Laurence a call, rather than an email, and explain the situation. He'll sort it.
