Very sad news... Only the good die young... RIP Nick
5. Hi... I'm on my 2nd Overwater. First was a Progress 7 that was fantastic and I now have a J Series which was built for me. The whole process was brilliant, Chris, Laurence and the boys really look after you and cater for your every need. I would highly recommend a chat with them to discuss your needs, you won't be disappointed.
6. My 35" OW jazz doesn't fit too well in either my Ritter or my Warwick Rockbag. I use an old Peavey bag which seems to have room to spare.
7.
I think your thread is very good Dan. Except the point above. If customs want to get into your case, they will. So take heed of this story: Double bassist Steve Berry was travelling with his bass and had it stored inside a Stevenson fibre glass case, I've borrowed his case many times and it is enormous, it attracts attention wherever you go, from security especially... Steve put a lock on the case thinking he would be safe not letting anyone open it. Customes took a dim view of this and smashed a hole through the front of the case and inserted a camera to find that it did indeed carry only a double bass, luckily they missed the bass by milimetres but given that Steve has a gorgeous old instrument well in excess of 10K you can imagine his anguish when the case came out with a big hole in it.. My advice, don't lock your case...
You can buy padlocks that customs can open but civilians can't. Customs see a locked case like a red rag to a bull....
8.
Another Pro here. *waves* Some of the things that I have found to be important for my career are......... -Good reading skills........for theatre work, sessions, big bands or bands with a large pad. -A quick ear..............to be able to learn songs on the fly, either in a studio or on a gig. -Decent knowledge of theory.........don't want to play a major 7 over a dominant chord. -Stylistic Diversity.........Rock,Pop,Jazz,Country,Funk,Big band etc - Versatility..........MD-"Can you play more/less notes?" Me-"No Problem". Transposing a tune, changing the groove etc. -Good technique.......No point being able to read a hard chart if my hands can't play it. -Doubling on Electric and Upright........doubled my work load. These are just some of the skills that have really helped me with being a Professional musician. Of course there are other, non musical things, like Personality,Image,Attitude,Having a Reliable car -I could go on.
Can't '+1' this enough... Some great points there
9. Oh gosh yes... It's called 'Cruising' for a reason lol
10. Maybe the Lotto comment refers to 'making it' as a well known, respected 'first-call' session bassist such as Guy Pratt, Nathan East etc. There are many jobbing players out there doing the things you mention. Myself, I do sessions, tours, cruises, theatre shows AND teaching both individuals and groups. I'll never be rich but I couldn't imagine being an office monkey now.
11. Apologies for blurry 'phone pics Deluxe J5 Progres Elite 7 now owned by Overwater#1
12.
There are over 6,000 members on basschat, probably fewer than 1% are full time professional musicians who make enough money to live in a house, have children and afford decent food and booze.
Pro... check House... check children... check food..... check booze...... bugger

16. It's also my 40th next year and the mrs has made me a similar suggestion... When I was a kid, I had a poster of Madness on my wall featuring a Top of The Pops performance from the early days. In the picture, Mark Bedford plays a blck and maple Precision and I always promised myself that one day I'd have one. I don't mind if it's MIM or MIJ or USA but that's gonna be my dream bass as it's the one I dreamed about all those years ago.
17. Hey Chris I use the Diago supply to power my Deep Impact, IQ and Multicomp in a daisy chain and I don't have any hum or noise problems at all.
18. Trying to push something out or keep something in....? You decide!!!
19.
Poor old Jerry Dammers. He's been keeping the Special's torch alight for how many years, playing all kinds of dives, and now when they're playing decent venues again where is he?
Jerry was always the engine room of the band and has always publicly voiced his inwillingness to take part in any kind of Specials reunion. Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan allegedly offered the band £1M to play his birthday party and it was Dammers who said no. He asked the rest of the band to drop the name Specials for the reunion tour but they refused and relationships are strained. At the height of the band's fame, Dammers was earning 4 times what the others were getting, based on the fact that he wrote the songs and bad feeling spiralled from there. I did a gig with Roddy Radiation recently and he told me that he showed his kids all the records, photos and press cuttings from the heyday of the band. The kid's reply was... "if you were so famous, why are we so poor?" Doing it for th money...? You decide.....
20. For tax purposes, any item claimed needs to be obviously related to the nature of the work, the HMRC call it necessary and ordinary. It could be argued that headphones for an Ipod kinda situation wouldn't be necessary but in-ear monitoring or ear protection WOULD be. Certainly my ear plugs ARE tax deductable and I would be inclined to claim for headphones as an business accessory. I have to add that I'm no expert as I have an accountant to do all that stuff for me.
21. A perfect 4th is the first line of the nursery rhyme 'London's Burning'
22. The conversation usually goes something like this.... Me: I've had a call... MrsW: You're not going on tour again unless I can come too... Me: See you in a month, love you... MrsW: Bring me back something nice...
23. I use both the fretboard wipes and the polishing wipes and I think they're great. Would recommend them.
24. I'll say Overwater!! Personally, I've never played anything better.
