Brighter Flatwound string recommendations?
hooky_lowdown replied to TorturedSaints's topic in Accessories and Misc
The coating on D'Addario chrome's wears off in a few weeks, once this happens they sound awesome. But the coating does make the strings sound poop to begin with. -
Well, it's gonna be awesome. 👍

It will be if you rub it enough. 😀
-
Rub your neck with the rough green side of a washing up scourer, it'll remove whatever is making it sticky, and won't do any damage to the neck, just don't rub too hard. 😎
-
Does it have the edges of the neck rolled? I don't know if Mark does this as default, and if you didn't ask then it won't feel vintage/worn-in. Rolled edges really make necks feel and play so nice. 👍

Doh, let down with a blue lead. 😉

I have no idea why you wish to hijack this thread, but to answer your question, eBay is NO barometer for the whole bass market. You have no idea how long "new" basses on eBay have been there unsold, so will obviously build up over time. If you measure how many used basses were sold over the same time period, you may get your answer. Not to mention all the other websites etc which sell used basses. I'd guess there's 30+ years of cheap basses (i.e sub £100 used) against all the new basses made sub £200 in the last year or so. You do the maths. If you wish to discuss this further, pm me. 😀

Ok, so who buys all the used sub £100 basses? Seeing as there is far more of them than new cheap basses.

Used is best bang for buck. But I've already said in this thread, the best new sub £100 bass is a HB pb50, hands down.

I didn't mean the brand (vintage)! I've had Squier affinity which was far better than any pre 2014 MIM fender I've played.

I think you're jumping the gun, the average beginner or their parents won't want to spend more than £100 on a bass. The £200 bracket would be the second or third bass.

This was the case years ago, but in the last decade there are so many solid starter basses on the market, all can be picked up used for sub £100. They are well made and have good necks for better playability. Yes, they won't be the best sounding bass, but they will make the right noises. Avoid all the "vintage" overpriced junk, and pick up a Yamaha, Peavey, Squier, Ibanez, SX, Harley Benton, J&D.

I've never found D'Addario or Fender flats muddy, I've always gotten articulation across the board with them. Labella and old school flats yes, but not hybrid flats. Does you tone knob work? -
Shame. The necks on these basses are the best part, but at least it was free. 👍

US Foundations were also made in popular, so lots for different woods. The ash ones like your are very highly regarded. 😄 Can you find another link to back up your find (link), as I'm guessing that is an error by Guitar Center. I've had a look myself, and other links say basswood.

Couldn't agree with everyone more. There seems to be a weird "soft" alt rock thing going on (for the past few years), where bands all pretty much sound the same and boring. For me, it's totally uninspiring.
