+1. If the previous strings were fine, then doubt it's the bass. Sometimes you get duff strings - I've had a few!

Reducing headstock peg holes - help?
hooky_lowdown replied to hooky_lowdown's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sounds interesting, what sort of tape did you use? I think I have some electrical tape which might work. -
I'm putting (crudely) a p bass together from parts I have in my parts box for my nephew. However, at the moment there is bad neck dive, so to counter this I have some old Squier Bronco machine heads which are pretty lightweight I want to replace the stock (Chinese) elephant ear ones with. Now, the peg holes in the headstock are 14mm, and the Bronco ferrule's are a little bit smaller. So, is there a quick/cheat way to make the peg holes smaller without having to dowl the holes and redrill new one's?

Here's a bit of an oddball, I'm looking for some hot (we're talking 14k +) p bass pups for a project I'm working on to get a super aggressive rock/overdriven tone. Got a small budget of £35, so may have to buy used, but what pups are on the market within budget? The more nasty and dirty the better. 😁

I was in Sunderland last weekend, could have picked up the yammie then. I've never had good experiences with peeps on gumtree.

Lol, no strings. What are you thinking, flats?

Nice rig Cat, the Orange sound is by far my favourite dirty bass tone.

New SX (Definitely not a Warwick) Basses
hooky_lowdown replied to BassApprentice's topic in Bass Guitars
Recently picked up a SX short scale p bass and I'm impressed with the quality, as good as any Fender MIM I've played, slapped on some D'Addario half rounds and it's my goto bass. -
One of my favourite heads of all time, not in the best condition, but a decent price... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Acoustic-370-bass-amp-head-vintage/254204770984?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D41e0d75aa9f541af8c3fcd5d2c1b27e7%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D254204770984%26itm%3D254204770984&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3A770ea5d4-62b2-11e9-a052-74dbd18025a6|parentrq%3A3613c04a16a0a9e3ae844cfdffe90d4e|iid%3A1

Unbranded one piece solid maple precision bass neck ('57 style and would suit a '57 replica build) fully loaded with tuners, neck plate and screws. A nice straight neck, trussrod fully working, skunk stripe, satin finish, missing a dot inlay on third fret which has been filled with marker pen. This is a used neck and as a result has knocks, dings and some paint marks to top, none of which affect how the neck plays, but if you are looking for a mint condition neck this is not for you. The previous owner had removed logo/brand name from headstock when I aquired it, so don't know its origin and foolishly didn't ask seller, but sure it's not Fender licenced. Does have standard Fender p bass dimensions at nut and heel, would make an ideal upgrade to a Squier or even a '57 partcaster. Postage to UK only for £8.50 (inc tracking).

What sort of P bass sound are you wanting, vintage or modern? We can give better advice if we know a few specifics? Fender or Squier Japanese basses are resoundingly excellent. Like Lozz196 says, newer MIM fenders or Vintage V4 reissue's are very good basses. Also Squier CV or Matt Freeman basses are decent as well.

Will be interested in feedback as I have an eye on the ivory and black one.

Zombie thread. If your squier is from 86 then it's not Korean. Korean squires started in late 80s!

NBD Squier Precision Bass for restoration
hooky_lowdown replied to Grahambythesea's topic in Bass Guitars
+1 to replace pickups and electrics, these are the weakest points to the Squire P Specials imho. The necks on them are fantastic though, and if you shim the neck you can get a super low action, and they can play superbly. -
In which case it could be a loose connection.

The soapbars would be active, and I believe the 404 is passive. This would explain the sound level difference.
