Principle involved here or am I over reacting?
JTUK replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
If the band are a cut-above in terms of takings... then agree the standard fee, agree the terms of a bonus if you hit that target and then you have made your money. The LL can then take the pot ... but he can't say it is for THE band...but he can say it is to keep music live. Punters will then decide whether they contribute. It is all about how he sold that collection... I think you have to know how the guy operates to judge which side of the fence the deal sits. Calling it the band pot is tacky...and dodgy. IMO. -
More threads revivals...so we can see what we've been missing. Not the same anymore.. IMO.
Had this happen to my band at one venue. We played there again ... but WE put the jar around before he could.
I hate pots and would hate to ask anyone to do one... apart from the special cases, -
I don't know. How many decent venues are there in the wet bit of France..?
I'm assuming the band is a draw for people to travel and the venue to be full... I'd say it is the venue's loss... But sure, it depends how much you get upset over perceived things. I back my judgement of people, so I think I'd know if this was a dodgy guy or a misunderstanding..? I suspect the latter in this case- not many people I know, tie up the entire deal tightly... and the booker forgot to mention it. But we shall see when the OP comes back with more info. -
Heads up for this Dublin 2014 concert.
Doesn't the fact that some people did a 150km round trip to see you mean anything? It could be argued that you're letting these people down. I'd be a bit more pragmatic about it. Principles are a luxury for most - and you're lucky to be in a position where you can apply them in a case like this - but I can't help feeling you're being a little egocentric about it. What do your bandmates think?
Nope, dodgy is dodgy. If people are willing to travel that distance, they'll travel to see that band again at another venue. He 'specifically' held a pot for the band and it didn't go to the band. If I'd put money in for reason and it didn't make it to the band... I'd be thinking I wouldn't be doing that again. -

If this wasn't normal for him to take round a pot...AND also sold it to the punters as a collection for the band, then I'm fully with you. I'd not play it again. If he normally does this to make up the fee, then you've set a precedent for accepting theses 'rules previously so I wouldn't see why this has suddenly upset you. But...you see it the way you see it. Generally I don't like pots, but then bands and audiences are used to free music now if there isn't a ticket policy. -
Yep.... all bets are off with the cheap tat..

Tort... classic

Nope... spent a lifetime getting away from it. However, of late, it is is there, I'll deal with it. Never a pedal tho..

All of them. I wouldn't keep them otherwise
I'm sure Newtone would make them.
Yes, e-mail them. I think a Custom set of strings might be a wait of around 3-4 weeks so I order them in batches..
-
The early chassis' were PAS and then possibly Eminence...I'd stick with the JBL myself. Plenty of people know they are doing recone-wise VtypeV4 will be able to advise...
-
Depends when they made the cab... SWR used to use PAS speakers which were pretty good... but hard to source parts for...so that might be why you have a JBL..which is likely to be a better chassis. Which JBL..?

Do you notice a lot of difference in your string gauge and tone.?
JTUK replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I agree totally...from a feel POV you can't beat a lighter string. Any loss of tone can be dealt with by a slight twist on a knob or slider...
But by the same token... raising the action with add more that a bigger gauge, IMO. And I say that as someone who has always used lighter strings and a very low action and the main benefit of that was that you saved your hands a beating over the years... -
I'd go for the Mklll as I think the active element would be better... The good/bad thing about RCF 1" horn is that it can be pretty harsh... which means it is going to cut thru and benefit the vox... but you don't want to be standing right in line at a short distance. That is what I meant by harsh... I'd say RCF are right up there for bang for buck... The 2" is a lot smooher... and the larger horn..(not 2") from QSC tends to make them the cab to measure against...along with the warranty. But QSC and RCF would be my shoot-out

Wow.... not want I'd do at all.... but.... I'm not there to hear the final result. I do hear quite a few wierd EQ stories though and the approach I'd start with is that you aren't cancelling out another EQ set-up... This is why I tend to set my basses up to sound 'neutral' as not contradictory to any other settings. My amp is all around 12..and my active pre is a tad above the passive sound. This way, I'm not getting into any EQ fights with extremes and I only have a to dial back/forward a pot or two at most. Drastic changes just confuse where you are and where you started from...IMO. The slight downside is all my basses sound the ball park same... but then I accept that as my 'sound' or thing.
-
Two other great albums for bass...IMO.. Jaco on Michel Colombier and Anthony Jackson on Chaka's Naughty. AJ did say he had never been indulged so much which is why he came up with such monster parts.

Depends on your options... I think reading between the lines of Ads and sorting thru delusions takes a lot of time and a lot of it is wasted. But... it gets you out there meeting people. I'd take a recommendation from people i know and respected over randoms but the best way is to have seen them play and even better, know or have met them. Not saying the option in the OP are hopeless... but it is the long way round. IMO.

Gauge, string and action all can produce big changes... Play around with them all... -
Is the market for older instruments in decline?
JTUK replied to karlfer's topic in General Discussion
I always thought 70's Fender prices were optimistic, bordering on outright chancer prices as I didn't think the era was that good for Fender, generally. So,.. I'm not surprised if prices have dropped. Anything from that era seems silly money...and whilst some might be great basses... that isn't a given. But as a seller, you'll be putting a '77 J with original bits up for £1500.. -
Has anyone compared a BF BB2 with a Vanderkley 115MN6?
JTUK replied to dave_bass5's topic in Amps and Cabs
.................. what works well in isolation doesn't always work well in a live mix. When I got my Darkglass VMT I was horrified at the loss of top end (compared to my VTBass) and the middy tone It produced, but it a band context this actually helped me with getting heard and the tone became more focused. .............
Don't subscribe to this point of view at all, Dave. I get a tone I want to use and use it.. I spend all my time working on the tone for the style I'm using and once I get it that is the sound I use at a gig. The sound..to me, is pleasing solo'd and works in the mix and band context. I'd also say the sound is pretty full range as I like to hear what I do up top as well as have a good...not massive..low end. Why would I spend so much time on a tone that is techique dependent and then have to change it because the stage sound doesn't work..Sounds complete nonsense to me. I am quite bemused people have so many problems hearing themselves and being heard. If that happens..something is drastically wrong, IMO. -
Yup. I'm very wary about anything - cab, amp or bass - until it's been gigged a few times.
Ideally, but my latest cabs were bought when given them the beans in the shop. From then on, I knew they'd work as the core tone was there. Rehearsals and gigs has further enhanced that.. To be honest, wasn't surprised.

I have a friend who use Fanes in his 210 builds. He complains that he doesn't get the top he likes and we are going to work right thru his tone stack....which involves racked compressor, power amp and Music man strung with flats. So, it may not be the cabs/chassis' at all, but I'll try and get the models he is using and also comeback when/if we find the culprit. If we used my gear, I'd know in an instant if it was the cabs/chassis. I also think I recall he used a 'plan' to build from. I really need to find out more
So your own personal experience of them is from the older generation stuff, not the Gen 3 gear which IMO is a significant step up? (Asking for clarity not an argument - it appears that way from your statement but I may be reading incorrectly!)
I'm not sure, tbh. Late 2014, silver front, shelved porting on the side of the cab. Not sure of the other.
