I like him.... always going looking for his stuff when I feel like a little inspiration

I tend to work off recommendations and people I know of, so I can ask a few questions before it gets too far. I wouldn't expect too much from randoms...tbh.

Our gigs cancelled at request of 'name' tribute act
JTUK replied to DaytonaRik's topic in General Discussion
Even for the same band, I think 4-6 weeks between a pub 'free' and a ticketed event is about right but sales will really tell the the real story anyway. What that has got to do with another band I'm not sure... but you can look at it as a sort of compliment from the other band but not so much that the venues chooses to pull your gigs.. Sometimes these go to the Brewery if they are both supplied by the same...but you may also find Breweries don't or can't dictate to such a level and it is all about keeping the venues happy. -
2x 1hrs max. We would do what we do. ..and they've seen us so that is what they get. Extras incude late finishes, taped music, early starts and travel. After all that the price is the price.
I still object to this notion that, because it's different to a supposed 'original', it's only down to laziness or bad musicianship.............
I'd agree.............. the copy band maybe, play it or deliver it better, within context. I'm only concerned it works and I'd say the songs generally do or we need to sensible enough to drop the song. I think it depends who you have on the gig... and what they can bring to the party.
-
You tend to want to refine it and be a featured band...ie, not want to carry the whole evening as that means getting there early and leaving late and working longer sets. I think it is important to come to terms with how long you are on the gig and how much you want to get paid.
that way to band is kicking. I usually start with a note-for-note transcription from the original, but inevitably I end up departing from this. What really annoys me is when people clearly haven't paid any proper attention to the original and just play 'what they think'.
What I'd do is pick people who bring something along with them... and then If I've got it, then they need to build on that..if they've got it. I need to get 'it'.. That way the band is kicking and the song is moving. The original becomes a reference and we should be looking to moving the song on or at least do something with it. I don't enjoy bands who play by numbers in general and certainly wouldn't want to play in one..

You tend to only get pulled up if it doesn't work. IMO.

When did they go to a passive option on the active Deluxe?
I think it all stemmed from when Nathan East was playing while he was dancing. He certainly played on pretty much all the studio stuff. And when someone was playing for him, wasn't it because he had some illness? The gig with Nate East on.
That is a great clip..and a great series as well. It goes back well before that tho... I don't wish to labour the point but I'm sure there is plenty of stuff should you be interested enough to look.. But yes, someone had great groove in that band at the recorded stage..
Im a little confused JT.?
B5 ...check out any live concert footage and you'll see he dances very well..... but he isn't playing a lot of it... and since a move he'll pull isn't choeographed to that degree..he can't be playing the song at all. It is either tracked or has a background player. I'd guess the former otherwise stories would have come out by now. The first time I wondered was when I heard a 1977 album track by Lenny White..can't recall which one. Then I had a stars licks video which was very poor... So now, I wonder how much he ever played.. Just try and find a live concert footage and see if you agree... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlxMxQWnDxw

I'm not really going to count them .... but in our local what's on type mag/fanzine, I'd guess there would be about 60-70 plus gigs per weeks all within about 45 min drive..and from recollection, that is probably quite a few more than in the heyday of say, 20 years ago. I know quite a few people today who try and make a living out of relatively low-key gigs. So, I wouldn't say the scene is dying
Its unlimited how much joy and influence i get from this band and Verdine…. 20 + years, and my ears are still finding something good. What a groove, this record has,. If there is anyone who plays for the music it is Verdine. No flash, (maybe a little) no slap, Just the music.
Sorry to burst your bubble but I think it unlikely you'll find live footage where he plays the bass.. these last 20-25 years.. The bass on the track live is great,..just don't know who is playing it. But, sure, got to love those songs.
Really, most of the important stuff that makes this a 68 bass is missing. You can buy so much more for £2000. Seriously good basses are well within your grasp. I'd be looking for a much better bass than this one for that money. I'd also be worried about selling it. I think you'll have trouble there.
This... top dollar for all original is one thing...this is none of those. I think you have to get it for a very keen price and the seller has to be realistic, Personally, I think it is too iffy all round and hard to price, so I'd be looking elsewhere...
Not read the thread but, for my money, the problem is that there are more and more musicians fighting for fewer and fewer gigs. I remember when I started going to see live bands, there were several choices every night of the week. Now it feels that there more genres I don't like, more bands I don't want to see and those that I do fancy having a look at are getting less and less exposure. It is also more and more expensive to see stuff that used to be free. That is why we put our Jazz East events on in Felixstowe for nothing; exposure of a vital art form to increase interest outside of the cogniscenti.
Far fewer people will go out and see bands these days..IMO and the group of today is the same people of 20 yrs ago...but they have less exposable money and more demands on thier time. I think people will go out once to see a band but not be regular.. A lot of towns music venues exist on two weekend days... and the mid week gig is tough. Most of the venues of 20 plus years ago have gone... the bands haven't.. ... but newer venues have taken their place. I think there are vibrant scenes but it is harder work getting an audience.. and bands have to work it more. The fact that pubs still pay the same sort of money is because there are fewer people going to see them. Bands are required to have a flollowing.. so this promotes same old bands, tbh. You could argue this makes those bands viable and venues might want them... but those same bands don't get to play the musicians pubs as they don't appeal to a discerning market..? You can't be a band anymore, you have to position yourself to a sector.. You play the 'popular' circuit of pubs or you play the muso pub/venue but I don't see many bands crossing over... The reason being that they don't appeal to some people who will pay for music...and one of the reasons for that... is that they play free pubs..what makes their gig worth paying to see when you can see them free virtually every other week within 20 miles of where you live. People will pay for something different or something good... but they wont pay too often for the same thing and especially if that exact same thing is free in a pub..

Yep, I'm bored too. But I think I'll go for a run.
So, You accept it. Shops accept it. Difficult to relate how many lost sales that has cost. The shops loss perhaps?
I wouldn't buy a bass if I didn't think I could 'fix' it... and two of my most recent buys are better for me since I've tweaked them. Why the shop didn't do them..??? altho to be fair, one shop tried, I just worked on it more.
-
If it plays well, and has no obvious big flaws, I'd say 'steal'...
-
Any senior assistant, manager or owner of a music shop should be confident and competent enough to tweak a truss rod.
But I know plenty of bass players who aren't... and don't/can't do their own set-ups so I'm not sure on the shops around here.
-
Depends how many gtrs they stock... and action is one thing... not sure tweaking the neck is something something they'd do lightly..
Thanks all, this rig will be set up in my man cave, I won't be gigging, may jam with a drummer occasionally
In that case, it doesn't matter, IMO. I used 2x210 for the load-in which I could do myself. Wasn't that keen to do that with a 410.
-
Depends how stable your bass is but I've put them in proper flight case and they travel well. I'd expect my basses to survive a knock or two and them falling over so a bit of 'rough' treatment by airport handlers should be ok... as long as the bass is a good and snug fit in the case.

Suitable backline for theatres and medium-sized venues
JTUK replied to The Twickerman's topic in Amps and Cabs
Several things will help. . . A louder amp. I'd classify what you have as a practice amp. If you want to cover all eventualities you need at least 500 watts and a 212 or 410 cab. I prefer 212's. ........................
This... A 410 and appropriate amp so you can hear the thing should you need to. If your monitoring is good and you have a mon mix then even better you can set the amp up to suit. Other varibles are how you play and what you want to hear. So a 410 is good as is 115+210 typically. -
An American Deluxe model of a the past few years will be block and bound witha 4+1 headstock. If it is jus a few years old, then £650 is a great price unless it is has been wrecked. It will be active only.... The pickups are ok..not so keen on the pre amp and the neck profile is what it is-which is not to my taste. I would say the model is over priced new... but I would say the price of a decent SH one should/may be around £900.. altho they have just discontinued this line so new ones are around £1000, iirc... down from £1500 6 months ago. If you like it as a player, then they are ok..
-
They are ok... But there are far better basses made by cloners. The reason they are called super-jazzes is because they tend to blow the Fender's out of the water, IMO. Not saying they aren't decent Fender Jazzes..but you need to search them out.
