Janelle Monae is the first thing I have enjoyed so far incredibly funky. Stingray BTW
Jesse J for me..with the little girl How a 'new' performer had the bottle and the ability to pull that off at her biggest gig as yet (IIRC) was something else..IMO.
I met Mark King backstage after a Level 42 gig in Cardiff in 1981. I was a young tongue-tied kid who'd just discovered his playing after growing up listening to pretty much exclusively old school rock music (Purple, Sabbath, ELP etc.) The rest of the band were great & spent ages talking to me & signing my programme. Mark actually went & got his basses that had been packed away by the road crew so I could play his red Jaydee & the legendary white "Starchild" Jaydee. He was absolutely bloody fantastic & to this day I don't think I've ever met a nicer person. I won't hear a bad word said against him - he's a f***ing gem.
Nice anecdote. Good to hear.

Really really missing the point if you think it is just a matter of taste... but I shouldn't be surprised.
For somebody who doesnt care (Twice), you seem to have alot to say about them, all of which is negative. If you've ever seen U2, you'll know that they rarely play the tracks as they were on the albums. They did Glastonbury by popular demand. Its a gig with a wide audience, not their fans, from age 8 to 80. At that type of gig, the audience expects exactly what they delivered. Same thing for 25 years, you clearly havent listened to any of their many albums, granted there are some poor ones, which is inevitable after 35 years, but every 3 or 4 years they produce a classic album, none more so tha their atom bomb lp of 2009, which has some great work on it. I'm not their biggest fan, but think they need to be defended from such ignorant views, as an earlier response, i just dont get the negativity. Especially when you talk about Peter Gabriel??? I guess its all a matter of taste though, and even if i dont like a particular band or artist, i would certainly respect them for what they do, and if, like U2, they have producing top selling albums, and tours for over 30 years, i'd have to accept, that the majority are probably right, and i may be missing something.
Not worth replying to this post...
It appears that your own personal preferences are blinding you to what most people want to see. The point of going to see them is the atmosphere, to be part of the event, and to actually see the real band play the songs they wrote. Most people who aren't musos could care less if they did a samba version of I Will Follow, a garage version of Pride or a 20-minute improv around One. They've never claimed to be virtuosos or to be particularly left-field, and of course they do what they do. What's wrong with a (more or less) greatest hits show at a gig like that? What's wrong with a greatest hits show anyway? FWIW, "milked the same thing for 25 years" sound like you rather do care. If you really didn't care then why bother posting at all?
I wasn't going to bother posting about them again..but just to say, I'd go to see and band to be wowed... to see something special..neither of which would apply to the act concened the way they go about things...which is shame but there you go. I just thought it a poor show to be rehashing the same thing since day one....and that is the theme of my post. It could be a any number of acts, possibly, but it is certainly true of this one. Now Jesse J...that girl is a star. Very impressed for a first major festival
Hey Jack, I've just started using a P bass again after about 12 years away and I'm surprised at how different it sounds. My memory was definitely playing up! I'm not sure that you'll get a J to sound like a P; the J pickups are in the wrong place. I think you're right to not route the body. If the P pickups use the J slot already there the P pickups will still not be in the right place for a "proper" Precicion sound anyway. You might get close (but no cigar) with a good off board preamp, but the only way is a P bass with a J bridge pickup. There's a Lakland PJ currently in the FS section. I reckon it would do the job perfectly, but I know that wasn't the question!
Correct, IMV... you can get close.but if that is not close enough, you are stuffed, IMV The J pickup is in the wrong place...that is all there is to it.
Have you heard their albums? Stood still? Hardly. As for the pub band thing, er, this is the original band. You could say that about anyone. And the Gabriel/Bowie comment is a bit weird; they're considered/expected to be fairly eclectic anyway. Not everyone needs to chop and change as much as they do. If I go and see Bowie, yes I might want/expect a few left turns, but if I go and see AC/DC I (and most fans) most definitely don't want any left turns. If the songs are strong enough (always a matter of opinion) why change them? If it ain't broke etc...I just don't get your argument at all, other than arguably from a muso perspective. Which strangely enough, most punters aren't.....
If what you get is a the CD version why go and see them? No point at all...you know every turn they will make. The Edge does his thing and the other guys do their thing...same as, everytime. A 4 piece such as they is pretty limting, the style they use on every song, even more so... what was once ground-breaking is now hammered to death.. why make it blantantly obvious the limitations of the format and the band and the fact they have run out of ideas... If their fans want that, then fine, carry on. But I can't believe they can't be arsed to ask where they want this or that version to go.. I expect that from decent cover bands. Financially they are sorted, but artistically, they sound shot..and I doubt that is the legacy they would want..or maybe they do..and if so, they deserve the stick. As I said..I don't care...but I expected more from these guys. But, hey, they have milked the same thing for 25 years..they got a very good run out of it.
-
I'm sorry, but the band has stood still for years... same format of ALL songs. They have some classics and a few belters but they are like a faithful tribute band. Now, I don't really care one way or another..but artistcally, they are as stale as ...... !!!!!!!!!! As a tribute band, that is to be expected..but this is supposed to be one of the top bands in the world..and they put no effort at all into freshening songs up. For that they get a canning and drop down in anyone's estimation, IMO.. They are an original act for chrissakes..even pubs bands realise that flogging the same song/format to death without trying to freshen them up is soul-destroying and massively limiting. They have no choice as to what classic they can draw on... but at least give the songs a swerve here and there. You can see that set played up and down the country by a zillion pub bands.. I would expect waaaaay better... it is either lazy, complacent and downright stagnant ..any of which does not befit a major major band of the last 25 years. You wouldn't get it from Bowie or Gabriel and that is the sort of level they are at.. I really can't see any band doing it. Even the Foo's who have toured massively these last few years freshen up a gtr chord song.

No swelling..?? might be a splinter or shard of metal/string. I'd soak it in TCP and also hot water..but you don't have much time. I'd do that overnight anyway.

Agree with Legend being a bit of a throwback .. I was watching a Sky Arts program about this very same thing..and Legend came up as a modern day great. I don't think they were trying to compare modern day to people like Marvin Gaye or Al Green though.
-
It would be easier to pick women for modern soul voices.. Er... Darryl Hall..?? hardly modern. Nope, I am struggling for a benchmark
The man on the telly has just called Cee Lo Green 'One of the great modern day soul voices'. Now, my knowledge of modern music isn't great, but Jesus... is he the best we can do? Tell me it ain't so... I like his outfit, though. Fair play to him for wearing that.
Actually...saw a version he did of Reet Petite on Later and it was pretty damn good. I think his material is pretty average ..from a song writing POV, but as an artist he is far from alone in that respect. but his voice is way better than his catalogue. IMO, of course. I am trying to think who would be one of the modern great soul voices to compare him with though... male, that is. Luther V..?? modern..?? ???

Hmmm..my basses don't go out of tune in a set... so that wouldn't be a reason to change them..but I guess it is quicker to have them re-tuned by the tech..than have to bother yourself The main reason they change basses would be sound or playability for that particular track..but anyway..the whim is theirs for whatever reason. I'd would be more concerned about a supposed headline act doing the same set that they have always done...forever and a day. Obviously song choices change but the treatemnet of the song never does or can..as they are still a basic 4 piece. It is quite unusual for a major act to not augment/change the empahsias on a song throughout the years..or even re-invent to freshen things up... In that respect U2 were dull..and the performance average. Even if major major acts..and U2 should be at that level, in term of stature..... have to play crowd faves/hits, they haven't botherered about the songs.. I can't think of any act that would be so lax and basic. That is why they deserve a panning, IMO.
Can't blame him for plugging his own gear!!
No, I meant the trainspotting element was a bit sad.. People use what they use...... sometimes I am not sure they use it for the sound...and their might be another agenda,...either way, I don't care much Have t say..so far, on another slant....haven't seen a very good set by anyone, U2 were average, for example.. The crowd seem to be into it all though.
-
No..it would be a bit sad, wouldn't it..?

I have used 15" on the bottom of other cabs but now I use 2x210's which is far better for me. You don't get the mud of a 15".....everything is clearer all round, IMO. Not saying you should do this....as you have your own ideas, but just that I wouldn't add a 15" to a stack. The last thing I want is more bass..I can add that anytime I like. It is getting rid of unwanted bass that is/can the problem.
I don't buy the vintage is better thing. I've played lots of old ones. I've played lots of new ones. There's not much in it for me, Some old ones are better than some new ones and vice versa.
Me too... My 77 Jazz was the biggest piece of crap ....and people want £1450 now because of its date. Fender are capable of making crap basses now just as they were then..decent ones survived.
-
The heel aspect is something that super Jazzes dealt with in the 1st instant... To have that block there on a Fender/bolt-on is a lack of design/thinking

Nick one from another band..musical chairs..!!
No willy-nilly or tossing going on here, mate, just an ongoing listening and evaluating exercise to find out what works for me. And a resistance to being told that I sound like x when I actually sound like y.
Agree. People don't have to be sheep, but they have to trust their ears. If they don't know any better, you can go round and round in circles reading latest opinions of what might work. Put the time in... check out people who have also done the same..and whose opinion you can relate to and you may get a frame of reference that amounts to something. Reminds me of a session I did when the engr told me I was out of tune...I didn't know at the time, so I went straight out and bought a tuner. You could ask why I didn't have one anyway..but I was young and my first time out. I now know and have the confidence to know when I am in tune or not..and I don't need a tuner to tell me. The same goes for my cabs...the amp and the bass, for that matter. IMO.
