Tune a tone higher? No chance. The original is in Eb minor if I remember correctly.
Agree. It's a synth line but pretty achievable on bass eitherway
Good evening, Nostromo... A simple solution perhaps would be to obtain a Fender Bassman 2 x 15 cab..? They came with (optional...) K140s, and, imho, sound top. I have such a cab, but, for lack of funds to equip with K140s, I've installed Beyma equivalents. If I get the opportunity, I shan't hesitate to swap out for the real JBLs (anyone got a pair spare, affordable..?). There's certainly not much scientific hocus pocus in the Fender 'design' (it's basically just a biggish box...), but it fits the bill for me as far as '60s/'70s sound goes (Hofner Verithin bass, Hiwatt DR203 amp; can't get much more vintage than that, but then, I'm old...) Hope this helps.
I have a K140 and a D140... both may need a recone. One certainly would.

I used to have an old JBL brochure which specced cabs and chassis in great depth..but it is long gone now. Mostly though, IIRC, it concentrated on reflex bins like the 4550 I still have the speakers looking for a new hom..and I think both are D140 or K series. I am not sure if the Fender cabs used D140's.... but JBL should surely have some stuff on the i-net for this sort of thing.. being as they were pretty much the benchmark chassis for so long..???

I guess it depends on how you view old designs doing a modern job. A freind of mine has an old Vincent 1200 thingey which drop jaws everywhere he takes it... but he has restored it with stainless steel parts..which he made himself. The thing looks the DB's even to someone like me who knows nothing about bikes..but he took it up the road on old design crossply tyres and said it was lethal..he was gutted, it rode so badly. So modern tyres and he is happy..but certain people think the stainless steel mods plus the electric starter and new tyres is against the grain..??? But by the same token, I was offered an E-type fully restored for £25k...and I know that would have driven worse than my current car and been slower to boot. And how authentic was it anyway..?? I guess what I am trying to say is..given the disposable money I'd have vintage if I bought into the idea totally..and so therefore do it properly.. but since I don't have the money for that sort of weekend ride.....or a vintage bass that I would use.. it isn't something I don't have to ponder over. Not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing... but I do think bikes and basses should be used, so that might direct my thinking

Interesting... I used DR's faithfully for nigh on 20 years and was very happy with them. I'd get quite a few cleans out of them as well..which helps when you are in for nigh on £40 per pack. Since I changed basses..and peg config..I needed a new set or sets..and decided to see what else was out there I'd had a duff pack of DR ..not one string, which I NEVER had all that time before, but a whole pack. I favour Tapered B's so that cut my choices down..I also like no silk winds as that just gets messing when cleaning them... I would like to stick with DR's but they aren't cheap. Best, I have had recently have been XL pro steels..although a tad bass heavy in sound, but they stay the same sounding for a decent while. DR are livelier initially but you notice the degrade more than XL pros.... Ken Smith are good and reasonable money so I'll buy more of them and La bella Super steps are my faves at the moment but I have only ahd the one set. It would be a shanme to write off DR strings but there latest batches have been iffy.. and causing me to look elsewhere. I definitely think something has changed in the steel that these winders use..and I am pretty sure that winders make strings for all sorts of brands..correct me if I am too wide of the makr here... so I would welcome a source that supplies a lot of string in a lot of gauges. I need this 40-125 with a T B str. I can go for La Bellas Super Steps at Thomann for the best price EVEN with £10 post but I end up shopping around to get the sets I want..if I deviate from brands. So if anyone knows who does a tapered B in 125 or less..then let me know. I would try Warwicks as I hear good things but most websites on strings aren't forthcoming on this.. hence why I use D'addario, DR and Ken Smith ..so far. Am thinking about using U.S sites for a bulk buy.
So if you weren't interested in it and wanted to sell it on and you took the neck off to validate your age claims only to inflict that damage you wouldn't be interested in it? I would be bothered from both a financial point of view and as someone who has an interest in basses in general whatever type of bass it was, Its not like picking up a dink or a nice bit of mojo finish checking.
No..I mean I wouldn't be interested is buying it if someone had looked after it like that..of not, as it appears. It would be a shame, of course. I rate my MM circa 80-82 as one of the best basses I've had, but some people don't have much of a clue..I knew a guy who stripped down a 62 P-bass to bare wood... and tha cost him a LOT of money.
Hmm I wish I had a way of trying the two options out. I'm guessing then by the sounds of it then that if I wire the cabs up in series then I won't have issues with the 10's and 12's getting different amounts of power per cab?
If both cabs are 8 ohms then the power split is equal. The bias of the 12's might make it sound as though more bass is coming from them but I'd have no worries running 2x410's, or 212/410 maybe even a 210...but I probably wouldn't do the latter as one cab would be half the pwoer handing of the other... It wouldn't be my ideal..but then again..to make nonsense of my statement.. I probably would run 212/210, so..?? If the amp produces 300w into 4 or even 500w..you still should have 350w from a 210..but GS210 are hard to come by in this country, I think..!! If you don't mind lugging round 2 large cabs...then a 2x410 will be thunderrous as well.. I had to decide on a 115 over 210 as a partner for another 210..and I went with 2x210..and that was a great choice. I didn't miss the 115 at all..if fact, I suspect it would have been too bass heavy. Ball park spec GS212 600watts GS410 700watts GS210 350watts....if you can source one

I like the Lakland DJ take on a Jazz..but retro isn't their thing and it doesn't work..IMO. It ends up looking like a gash PV/Ibanez thing...and you should want to avoid that at all costs..if I were Lakland.
-
I had one just like that..and very good it was too.... but I wouldn't be upset about the flaws/damage..I just wouldn't be interested in it.

Overheads are overheads..which is why people get builds in China and Korea

Know what you mean about the audio...hopefully you can get the better feed on the DVD It sounds like you have to fly in stuff to augment the sound? (not got a problem with that as I have suggested a little project do the same as it saves so much hassle etc etc and no less costs..) Sounds a very nice gig to get.
On top of this, you then have the issue of the speaker sensitivity. Every cab with have a dB @1W rating thing that I don't really understand or pay attention to, although I think the barefaced cabs aremeant to be super good for this.
Not sure about this. If you have to use a very hi powered amp to make any noise with a 300-400 watt speaker, that hardly suggests efficiency IMO. If you tune the cab to produce low-end at the expense of volume..therefore needing lots more of it..that is the trade-off which is not much good to you if you have to buy another amp. A very expensive way of doing things..???

Yes.. thanks for sharing. As a plug..I am currently liking Ken Smith strings..reasonable price in the UK and a tapered B at a decent...for me..gauge. I think BC should set up a string shop outlet as well... it is a right bugger to get what I want without going all over the place.

For a Premium job, then I'd go for Sims..having seen their work close up...but expect to pay..and probably start at £270 or so...and that is without getting back to wood prep..which is very labour intensive. If you use the same colours..then you don't need to go back to bare wood and that will be a saving on the extra costs
Thanks guys... Unfortunately GenzBenz is a bit hard to find in the Netherlands. The Orange Terror could be an option, but it doesn't have a headphone out (which is a must when you have three small kids), and I think it is plain ugly. As for preamp tubes.... In my experience (mostly with guitar amps) 12AX7's don't add a nice overdriven sound (For that you need power tubes), nor do they add warmth to clean tones. And since I'm going mostly for clean anyway I don't really need having a preamp tube somewhere in the amp.
Try a Markbass then. I personally like a little tube in the pre amp stage to stop the sound getting sterile when you turn it up. On that basis, I would add an SWR Headlite..but if you don't want a valve, then don't. Mids are very tricky..everyone thinks they want them and then can't get a playable sound as they can be harsh and un-flattering when a tad off... In this sense, Ampeg's typical pre amp stage with the graphic and the switch is hideous and also so bland..altho if it is to your taste, then the switch makes things pretty simple..which is not to be sneezed at. My personal way of dealing with this is to have a good nice bass signal into the amp ( read one that you are happy with ) ..and the the amp becomes less critical. People seem to want/need a lot of EQ to get a sound..when the sound is pretty much already determined by the input signal. Plug'n'play..... saves so much hassle. You just then need an amp with core sounds.

I'd go the GS212 at 8ohm route as you would get thunderous low-end from that cab..if using 2 GS112's is anything to go by..
I've just bought a Bartolini mm pickup from Tony. Great comms, great transaction, great delivery, great guy. Highly recommended to deal with. Steve
Agree with all the above. I just bought a DTR tuner and I sent the money yesterday and it arrived this morning perfectly packaged. Excellent all round.

I saw a Aguilar GS112..with horn, I think, on here the other day for £160....STEAL..!!! That will do for starters and paired up - at a later date - you have a cab set-up that could cope with a very loud band, IME.
I always use 2 cabs if a drummer is involved!
Yes..tends to be my maxin as well. 2x210 and 2x112. I don't currently have anything else. I have a weird desire for a 610 though... ?????? no idea how I'll carry it though..or if I want to
More years ago than I care to remember I was looking for some pups for something or other- I phoned around & spoke with Kent who was incredibly helpful, he was just about to start a new business "Rainbow Pickups", which was where I eventually went. Since I haven't seen anyone mention Rainbow in this thread so far I guess this is old news? Kent Armstrong Rainbow Pickups. Hazeldene House, Nickley Wood Road, Shadoxhurst, Kent TN26 1LZ England Tel: +44 1223 732527 I also had an old KA P90 dogear in a guitar & sold it on along with a guitar sale. I still kick myself to this day over letting that one go.
Yes..know it well. That is where he built my pickups...and where he was winding all-sorts for all-sorts I can't say who he was winding for at that time...in view of a few others threads here and that arrangement/business is/was between those parties.. ..but you'd know all the names.

Read the blown EA 10" speaker thread first..
