1.
And by the way - there's no need to chastise me for breaking this cab. I'm gutted. It arose out of a set of circumstances that I really should have prevented - using it for too loud a gig, using a head that had the potential to overpower it, not wearing my earplugs and being deafened by the drummer to the point where I couldn't hear the sound breaking up until it was too late. Inshort, failing to obey Alex's rule. I'll be very upset if I can't get it working again.
I think this is pertinent... I see on here lots of examples of too much power potentially going through cabs that aren't going to have much of a safety margin especially as bass can be brutal on a chassis' Loud drummers and loud gtrs and by then it is too late. I'd always have 40% or so more cab power than amp..no question unless the gig had no drums. No one can really know on any given amp where the dial is capable of producing what....Marshall were very loud at 2 on volume..and never got much louder, but people assumed it had loads left in it.. There was never a reason everyone used to run at 11..it never made any difference it was just easier to flatten the pots.. Of course some people squeeze designs a bit and then need to run higher power to compensate..which kind of makes a mockery of efficiency stats, but who cares, it is all on the ears anyone and once a situation is there where the volume of the band has lost control, you've lost control of being able to save the speaker..or even being able to hear it. I may have used crap speakers in the past - and blown them - and they don't have anything like the ratings of today..but that is to assume you can believe those ratings. With my 400watt amp into 4ohms..I reckon I'd blow any single cab speaker if I was stupid enough to run it that way. that is assuming the cab didn't choke my amp to a silly degree. Bespoke speakers are a problem when things go wrong and it is an educated guess what to replace it with if the chassis is discontinued or the stats not forthcoming. I'd always always go with a recone if possible.
2.
My missus aint been to a gig in years. as with the O.P she used to come to all of em. I realised years ago that girls love guitarists, but hate guitars.
This.....
3.
What this really comes down to is...who is the hottest?
Since I can't think of a player I like...I'll go for this.
4. Good luck if you go for it.
5. Cones are paper/cardboard so need a degree of care as do electrical joints.. I may leave them in overnight on a limited basis..but I make sure they are kept in a decent temperature in the house 99% of the time. I certainly wouldn't keep them in a normal garage for any lenght of time so I wouldn't do that with a car either.
6. My experience of bi-amping was that the amp was 200/200 into 4 ohms..so 200 watts was the most I could squeeze out of the amp. The sounds was pretty decent and I ran 115 and 210, but not that much worse that 400 bridged into the same cabs. I maybe preferred the split sound but I wanted/needed the extra volume. The variable x-uver was a must though and provide the most flexibility of sound, IMO. Without a variable X-over, not worth doing.
7. I wouldn't bother... and to my knowledge the GK head isn't a proper bi-amp option anyway.. but in the interest of expeimentation..I wager this isn't worth the effort. Well..?? was it..? To me, for bi-amping to work.. you need 2 power sources and a varibale x-over..so you send to a sub unit and a top unit. Out of the quality cabs you have.....send the lows to the 115 and the higher end to the 410..but I'd think the 410 would sound pretty ugly with a passed signal...IMO.
8.
ken, im really enjoying you on here, you,ve got balls of steel!
me too..I'd almost buy a Smith bass on the basis of this thread and no nonsense approach...but only a proper one.
9. I hope the drummer has a decent reason for crying off...as this appears to have been arranged and then someone decides they can't do it..?? Not a good start on their behalf....would be my thinking, especially if no good excuse was offerred
10. I have a theory that some brands have changed things fundamentally and not for the good, either. I have always used clean rounds and the quality in steel and out of the pack performance is very varied now, IME. I have spent the last year swapping out strings and a few brands are showing problems in brand new packs that I never got from any multiple cleaned sets before.... So.. not at all good, IME. I can't talk about this particular model, but I think there is something in string production/material that is not that consistant. I have been playing way over 30 years and only ever broke 2 strings before.. and that was before I knew what I was doing. Now, I have broken 2 strings in the last year...!! To have to write off a set of strings that cost £40 for a 5st set is not good for that brand loyalty... I took the whole set off as soon as I put them on..duff, straight out of the pack. Other sets have kinked in a string... when going for a cleanse. Stuff like that. Never had these problems before...in nigh on 20 years with that brand. Others are questionable as well, IME.
11.
Some of the pages were also about being told there was a $300 minimum spend which Ken has told us was a mistake and Vibrating G String being told he was an idiot by Ken after Ken sent the wrong strings. Just Sayin'
I read some of it..... though I couldn't go to 15 pages and counting..!!! I generally do think that mistakes happen and if you want that mistake rectified..you don't go off on one too soon into the transaction....just don't compound that 'mistake' again...if you feel so strongly about it. I also think that dealing with the U.S brings pluses and minuses with the price breaks... I have a part being replaced by warranty, for example, from the U.S. It is taking its time but we will get there in the end...post is a cost to me..!! I would have gotten a local tech to sort this out..and if he couldn't then that tech isn't the right man for the job. I am not sure it was worth this trashing..IMO.
12. ok.... get someone else to fix it...the parts were never exclusive to KS were they..?? Big fuss about not a lot, IMO. If it were me... I might be unimpressed but just go elsewhere. I think someone posted that a UPS quote was ballpark correct..??? I really don't see it being worth x number of pages, though.
13. Am I right to think this is all about a user buying a discontinued Burner model privately and wanted KS to provide replacement parts that had been broken.....??? The parts amounted to about $10 but the post was deemed OTT and not to the OP's liking..? Ok..he might be a touch miffed that he couldn't source them directly for a price he wanted to pay...but these are generally available parts from elsewhere and a decent tech would sort it all..???
14. Thanks for the good work.
15. I have to say..I am getting more problems off new strings this past year than I ever have before. I have a couple of sets of a well known brand..and I used them for years.. that really aren't up to the same standard as before. The strings kink ( E and A string ) if you put them in for a clean-up, rolled-up...and I am not doing anything different than I have done for years
16.
Man these guys are good.. i so dig Abs playing.. never mind Lee.. great stuff.. Abraham has got a style like no other.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW567Pjp6hU...embedded#at=162
Saw these guys in 'Friendship' at Londons Victoria Venue...and I couldn't work out what AL was doing. Star of the show was Steve Thornton's perc sole..all 20 mins of it. Absolutely captivating..!
17. Always low for me. I had a friend round with a MM Sterling and I couldn't be bothered to play it with his action. He tried my basses..liked the idea..and we set about lowering his action..although I didn't do the neck as it had that MM rotary thruss rod end..and I wanted to check it out before proceeding..plus he had a rehearsal that night so we left it with my tinkering. He can back to say that it was much easier..and more pertinently, less tiring, so I'll do the neck next time as well.
18. All 3..depending on the gig and the transport. If I am flying, then flight case, no question. If we load up a van with other kit, I'll get out the hard cases. If I am driving myself and therefore I load everything....gig bags.
19. You can see the Markbass heads for around £350 plus on here of late..and if you like them, that is a lot of amp for the money. 500w potential into 4ohms. The tube version would be of particular interest to me..as I like tube pres..and also, because the SS models can be a little sterile for my tastes when pushed, IME,....as opposed to rehearsal volumes when they are great. Cabs..? less a fan, but I like the 102 combo so would look at those 2x210's if you want Markbass all the way.
20. Yes..a little fee and a whip-round. For the OP... to get him onside, ask him about his gear...and his thoughts on sound etc. If nothing else..you may have made a useful bass-playing contact. ha ha ..banned licks..!!! Red House, Sunshine etc ect ..!!!
21.
Thanks for the reply JT, but as i`m sure you`re aware, they don`t seem to be plentiful, and they arent cheap. Unless you came across a few you passed up on? I think 2x210 is my ideal, but till then, I need a temp cheap solution, or one I can move on when the time is right. MM
quick, quick, quick..?????? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Eden-D210-XLT-bass-s...id=239726578348 but I would add that I know nothing about e-bay myself...or the Dims of the cab and if it will stack
22. ok..since nobody has a good opinion...can anyone offer something of better value.... without a sales pitch? Might be more helpful
23. Go along to see how this particular jam night plans out. Some are lead by good players who put together a session on a quiet night for them..and they may pull in a few favours from mates so it could be quite good. It is normally an excuse for a pub and leader to occupy a quiet night when nothing is going on for both. For players, it is a good way of meeting people...but you have to take advantage of it..and be worth a call-back. Go along and have a go..and top marks for doing so...but after 4 months you might not be ready. Other nights are put together by people who can't get a gig...and it can be a case of the blind leading the blind. If this is a step up from your bedroom...know the lie of the land and what is expected, be in tune..know the notes on your bass and know the song you are going to play. If you can read gtr chord shapes, then that will get you out of a lot of trouble.. Good luck with it... if you are brave enough to drop in..you'll learn loads in a single session, I'd bet. Come back and report how it went...??
24. Kent had an opeartion near to where I live...WD still maintain a presense in the area.. and he was up for all sorts of winds as he was building for a lot of people at the time. I got to try out quite a few variations ...and you'll be surprised who uses his winds in certain model options..even if they aren't/weren't named as a KA pickup. I use a pair with a John East pre and they do a great job. If you are talking custom winds, then a chat to the maker will likely get you something very very good, IMO. I know Kent was very good but am not sure how hands-on he remains...but his knowledge/experince is massive, IMO..and I think Aaron is worth calling. If Wizard is along the same lines then they should be on your list. If you use their knowledge of winds and coils etc ..then I would think they could build you anything you want.
