Have you seen/heard what Martin Sims does with his Multi pickup. I am not sure what it is called but it sounds great and you get all the classic sounds from the pickup block as the sound is picked-up from the right position on the bass. Sounds great..but too many options for me..and therefore very confusing what sound is what and where on the selector switches. But it does sound the BIZ..IMO.
However good the bass gear, it's unlikely to make a very good PA. If occasionally put music through a bass amp and, although making it louder, it's rarely very pretty. More significant are the completely different dispersion patterns that you'll get with good PA kit, helping reduce feedback, and improve audience coverage. I use RCF ART 700 series active speakers for PA. My monitors are ART 710As which also double as quite a capable mini FOH system if required - 10" + 1" horn, 750W, can deliver 129 dB - and all for only 11kg a unit. Using the right kit for the job will almost always give you a way better result!
This ^ gets my vote. Must admit, the OP sounds an odd way of going about things.... Having done the rounds with reasonable tops, we then bought something that really puts the vocals on another level sound-wise and hey presto, the first gig with them, the vocals came across beautifully and went down a storm. Playing-wise it was as rough as we had been for along time..but wont go into that..and we think the main difference was in the PA. So, there is a reason why Mackie is a decent benchmark..nowhere near the best, IMV, but perfectly ok...so I would use the stuff that was built for the job. I agree the sub is less important and just adds depth for the most part but crystal clear tops are an absolute must.

They might well make some up for you..or give you some ideas of options. But if you are going for POWER in a pickup, I frankly think this is the worse thing you can do. I have played around with quite a few winds at Kent's workshop when it was local and a balls to the floor wind is a huge let-down. So much bass/power it chokes the character and life out of the sound, IMO/IME. It is so much easier to add bass if required than to get rid of unwanted bass... I start from the former. I have some great KA pickups on a bass, but learnt from his lessons winding for Smith that a thicker gauge and less winds gives a more pleasing sound..so IIUI, I'd be careful what you wish for. just my 2p.....

Electrovoice SB121 Lightweight Subs - no longer for sale

I couldn't do this... I am not prepared to have to work that hard making someone else sound good. It is a two way street, IMO. You compliment and compromise I know that is our job to be the glue..but there is a limit. There is nothing worse than missing the '1'...it just shouldn't happen.

2 of my friends started to play and I fancied it as well. They were much more advanced than me so I took parts they didn't play...but at the same time I was attracted to the low notes. I joined a function band at 16 and and joined another bigger better unit at 17. As far as I know my friends never ever got out of the bedroom. I think I would have made a decent fist at drums and keys... the gtr itself never really appealed once I got started
I have to confess that as a Thunderfunk user it is just as confusing for me! The 550 produces (unsurprisingly) 550w into 4 ohms and isn't recommended to 2ohms... exactly the same as the amp for sale. The last TFB550B amps have/had a red push button switch located next to the power switch and labelled SS/Tube. However, the earlier TFB550(A) is equipped with an unmarked regular flick switch to the top right of the front facing... exactly like the amp for sale. One has to assume that as the buyer is selling a nearly new amp that Dave produced this amp after the production of 550's stopped and used an early face plate, hence 'the switch' being of the early variety.
Agree that this is confusing. The 550-A generally came with the flick switch as a an add-on mod..ie it went back to TF for this to be incorporated..so the face plate looks like a 550-A. It is also only named a 550..and the later models were marked 550-B. So from a cosmetic POV..the amp looks like a 550-A and maybe people think it is exactly that. I think TF stopped making 550 models when they ran out of chassis'..and maybe could only cannabilise what they had left over...which is what WH is saying.

Possible dep opportunity - Sat 25th June, near Fleet Hants
JTUK replied to molan's topic in Musicians Wanted
Sorry, should have been clearer... I know you named the date, it is just that the dep might not actually end up doing it if you are well enough so it could well be a lot of work and no date at the end of it. I'd be tempted to offer to cover the date..but I can't make it and it is too far. Have you chatted to chris b..? I expect he is pretty busy though. -
Looking at the list of bands below - I rest my case! I wouldn't put any of them in the same league as Queen. Don't ever recall The Smiths selling out Wembley!!
But Queen in 1975 were competing with Led Zep, Deep Purple etc..and they were never in that league either. IIRC, they were regarded as very lightweight by comparison...and it wasn't until those types of bands died, that Queen came to the fore...plus they were a pop band I am not sure in what period Queen started selling out everywhere, but I doubt it was in the 70's

Alternative Active PA Speaker for The Mackie Srm350 or RCF's
JTUK replied to algmusic's topic in Accessories and Misc
LOuder, more efficient, IMO... but tbh, I take little notice of published SPL's... and all the marketing stuff means not a lot until you hear them. We have looked at them ourselves but haven't pulled the trigger yet..I still fancy the EV's passive ( more bang for buck and less carry..?? ) and that seems to be our main decision..active or passive. If you have your heart set on Mackies, I am sure they are a cut above, and e-bay is full of them so let me know what you end up with and your thoughts. -
I would start flat and centred..most people say they want mids when they can't really handle them style/sound-wise. That is why the smiley position is used..and maybe even constitue a pre-set..depending on the TE model. Starting with an open string is a good idea... and just tweak a slider to hear what is happening. Don't use the extreme max or cut as you have nowhere else to go with it.. IMO...and depending how close the next Freq point is ( fader/slider) that will impact on the other freq as well.. So slowly and with logic..so you don't get all confused. These thinsg can be a powerful tone shaping tool and you can tie yourself up in knots. Tweak slowly and a little at a time.. Of course, the best idea... is not to have to do any of all this..and just plug in with the EQ switched off of flat to that amp...ie, centred. Don't get carried away with 'flat'..some amps and cabs are tuned to anything but..just consider it as a return /starter point on your kit.
-
Haven't used TE for while..but at one point it was pretty much the standard in the UK, IMO. I think your point about mismatched cabs would have more meaning if you were mixing makers, which you aren't so I would run a 115 under a 210 or 410..no question. The fact that this cab ( Trace Elliot 1015H) comes combined would not bother me at all..bar the weight. I think it could do with a tilt-back system with wheels though. I think Ziggy is selling a TE stack in the FS section... how does that compare..? being seperates you could take a small cab to a quite rehearsal. I'd rate a TE amp ahead of PV and Hartke myself... but someone more current may have another opinion.
I think that John Deacon had the right idea and bowed out after the Freddie tribute gig I never understood why Brian and Roger tried to carry on with the name Queen what was the point?
That can go both ways, I guess. Altho you couldn't replace Mercury's stage personna or Deacon's part in the band history, you end up with a better band still playing songs that are loved by many. For a start you aren't confined by a 4 piece anymore. I understand Deacon's POV...but he has done the gig and doesn't fancy it anymore, apparently ...but the other two have a back catalogue and can insert new guys and still do a show...which people want to see. Depending on your POV..this can seem crass or ok, but the other guys aren't to blame because 1 died and the other doesn't want to cary on. Personally, I like to see people step out of their comfort zone/gig..and May isn't bad at it. Altho they were never my cup of tea, they seem genuine enough to want to play..and if they are still wanting to do that..and don't we all...people are going to DEMAND a few old hits.

Can anyone point out a good example of fuzz/distorted bass?
JTUK replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Effects
The thing about most units is that you can EQ one string to sound decent but it doesn't work across strings. Try Starlight by Muse....but I would guess there is a lot of a split signal there..and that isn't practical for most people. The compromise is to play a simple line along the string that you EQ the best...so a simple line like Starlight can work with quite a basic set-up. -
Can't watch them at all. I did enjoy Paul Rogers and an augmented band cover some of their songs with May and Taylor otherwise it is just too weak for me. ..again IMHO.

Difficult..as there appears not to be an actual confirmed date at the end of this. A friend of mine was asked to dep a date..possibly..and was given a list of 44 numbers in the set..!!!!!! He is not used to depping, tho... He asked what to do..I said get a definitive set ( down to 22 ) and a confirmed date and then decide if the work is worth it. If I was Barrie..and I am sure he has thought of this.. he will need to decide whether he needs to put someone through this as soon as he can. I hope the finger is looking better..must be a bad accident if it is looking dodgy healing on time Hope all is well. -
Alternative Active PA Speaker for The Mackie Srm350 or RCF's
JTUK replied to algmusic's topic in Accessories and Misc
Going to have the same problem ourselves..but I think there might be more value and less weight in passives. EV do a nice line of small passive subs with 12"..and I am thinking we could rather carry these and bi-amp them from a controller than get a single that is much bigger and heavier. LD do a series which we might look at..and we have put our money into quality tops ..the sub is less so important. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LD-Systems-DAVE-SUB1...=item20b8b3c35a HK 18 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HK-AUDIO-PRO18SA-ACT...R-/150365408158 L2 Audio http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/15-800W-MAX-Active-P...532143445033538 We would like an ICS500...but they aren't many around and it might be a little heavy. Depends on what you can carry I favour the EV 120 type series... or Ramsa but both are passive, IIRC. -
Yes... basically someone hired them out to idiots..when I was abroad and I have two chassis in various states. One coil is fried, I am sure....the other may be ok.. they have been boxed up every since I took them out of the 4550 bins No idea about recone jobs on these and maybe the chassis are outclassed now. I do have to make use of a sub..so might play around with that idea...
June the 18th is our bands first festival, in swindon, england. Cant wait, not sure how many people are attending the festival but its just the buzz of performing on a big stage,
Well done. Do you know what P.A spec they have..mon mixes, and are you PAT tested for any gear you'll use..? Probably the next 3 questions you should ask after how much..??
-
The K140 needs a recone. The D series is in better nick, but knowing how the t$$$$$$ treated the bins they were in, I couldn't vouch for either
-
I don't know much about these amps, I am assuming that you can't get these from a dealer in Auz..?? Otherwise the warranty thing is understandable. Check that your source amp runs at your local voltage as the Yanks use 110v so you'll need the amp to be switchable..assuming Auz runs 230V..??? They are plenty of guys here who rate them and I am sure they will be along in a mo.
-
Personally, I don't buy the polarity issue..and I'd try and borrow another amp and see if that is any better. If you run 2 GS112's against a VERY loud drummer/band, you'll blow your ears before you run out of steam on the cabs, IMO.
-
Don't understand this at all. I run with a 400w amp and volume and bottom end is NOT the issue with GS112's at all, IME.
-
Martin Audio ICT500 with controller... and we will add a sub/subs as and when
-
I have a couple of JBL 15"'s which can go to a good home. One needs recone. K and D series 140/150 types, IIRC.
