All depends how fussy you are on how good the fake tortoise shell looks. Cheap ones can almost look like a poor print whereas expensive can be worth it is they look a lot nicer. And as the change is for looks then worth considering.
This... I have seen a few cheaper prints and they didn't work at all. I paid £70 for mine and I have no compunction saying that it was worth it, IMO. It was a custom fit, tho.. Some of the prints are very nasty looking..you get what you pay for. I don't say you have to pay what I did...but you REALLY need to see them, IMV..so you can work out what is worth what to you. IMV.
Forget the pups. Get the J-Retro first and see how you go. The J-Retro should deliver on all but the shittest pups. Do NOT sell your Jazz if you already love its playability. That is MUCH harder to replicate with a new bass.
This... the Retro is a very powerful pre ... If you are unhappy with the pups, then the pre will only enhance better pups anyway... but be careful as the pre with 12-15db sweeps can be overdone.. I use mine to enhance the basic pup sound..not to change it completely
That means I'm going to 'have to' pop over to yours sometime soon... the chance to A/B the same cab design but with Neo and non-Neo in each is just too tempting, though I accept that your non-Neo SWR might be on it's last legs as well!
The point about how long do speakers last is pertinent, IMV. I have often rubbished Ampeg cabs..for example..as hired-in cabs get a solid beating and I've often thought they were crap when I have used them, but they may have a shelf life which we are less aware of and just literally degrade. But... then the whole problem of replacement cones comes into play and old speakers just aren't that available..plus cab makers might not be that forthcoming about exacty what their bespoke speakers are..or are very close to. Swapping out a single cab speaker is one thing, but multiple chassis can be a real game of chance AND expensive. I couldn't find PAS speakers for love nor money over here..the U.S said they could hardly get the cones either. And when I did evenetually send them off to be repaired the cone-repair told me I would be lucky to get 100w per speaker. This, on the face of it, was the deal breaker but then who is to believe whose watts? So..we don't know what the speaker is, we don't know whether they rate it properly and a cone repairer can't give you back that spec...so where do you go..? This could affect..potentially..a lot of cabs when models move on. It is good that some people can use programs to get a close match... but the problem remains on whether you have to swap out one or many chassis. I am glad you got a result with the 2510's...but if you have quite a few spare PAS speakers that are ok...don't throw them away..you could save a good few people problems buy selling your spares.. As I said, I couldn't get PAS speakers for love nor money over here and they were decent in the cabs. There may be better spec'd speakers out there and they may be NEO but those PAS speakers worked in the Golaith series, IMO.

I don't use e-bay.. The truth is I have agonised over this sale for months..probably 2 years or more.. but I just don't use it now..and it is too nice to be boxed up. It needs a good home. I understand I can't track it and have no say over where it goes so it is here or the Gallery.

I know a guy not too far from you...Whitstable..PM me.
For your budget, Thurbs is your man: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=134736&hl= A lot of bass for you and for the money.
hard to argue with that...

Thanks for that..will check them out. Faves atm is a Martin rig with a controller. I think it all comes down to what we can all carry and if we need to split it for small gigs I favour F12's as they would handle small places on their own vocally.. and add S12 subs for bigger places. Martin don't suggest this..they suggest F10 but there is only about 5lb difference if using top hats/stands.

Time to stop using Rotosounds. Need some advice!

I've had a recent bad set of DR's... but that was the only one in years of buying them. I am still trying to clean them up as we speak. -

I've seen the HK in action..personally I like the idea of small high end and adding subs for the main weight of sound. I don't see much point..for example, of F12's plus bins if carry is an issue. Will check out NEXO..thanks. I think we have our hearts set on Martin atm... but like all these things..what you start out thinking and end up with, may be two different things. Ebay and SH is the way we are going atm .. EV isn't out of the frame either.
If you plan to get more do so yesterday, that's a silly low price considering what's happened to the price of neo drivers in the last 6 weeks.
That does sound a very good price.. As for more low end... the Goliath with PAS never lacked low end, IME. Far from it.. especially the rear ported Goliath ll.
We've picked up a regular bar gig for which we're using DB, slide electric gtr, acoustic guitar and congas*. Although he's tried hard, our current drummer isn't really a percussion kinda guy, so we're looking for a percussionist to fill those gigs (all paying), and ideally to play alongside the drummer at bigger venues. Sound-wise we sit in an awkward place between Little Feet, Tom Waits and Neil Young, although we're hoping a good percussionist will take us more towards the former. We have our own percussion so own gear and transport aren't necessarily an issue (although you'd kinda hope a decent played would have his own gear, I guess we might find one who doesn't or tempt someone out of retirement)? Assuming the chances of me finding a percussionist on a bass forum are , can anyone recommend any good forums on which I could advertise the post also? Cheers C *PS congas really mess with the DB sound, anyone else found that?
Don't talk to me about Congas...once had a 2 hour sound check almost, on those along.. If it is on a quite night for muso's, I would think most drummers would do this.. let me have a think..!!!

hmmm food for thought then..thanks. We are looking at Martin F15's but they weigh a bit. Quite like the F8 with subs and there are some on here. Mackie get decent reviews. Don't know what it is about JBL...but they don't seem to have the reputation they used to have
-
or best bang for buck. We are thinking about going to a full range P.A to handle the band. I think tops and subs would be ok but space might be an issue. I fancy Martin F series from the little research I have done. Other stuff in the frame... is Mackie or JBL...we have a bit of a downer on JBL atm, though. Also EV. Passive not powered. Opinions please?

DR for me..but D'addarios aren't too bad at keeping their brightness. I am not such a fan of the overall sound..too bassy for me in a string. Don't get me wrong, I want lows..I just don't need this help from a string so that is why I use them less.. but they are mid priced and last ok. FWIW, I think 2 weeks is about right for a 'live' sound. The other thing about DR is that they don't have any silk winds so if you are careful winding them on they clean up well and often, IME. I'd get at least 5 runs out of them, I'd think, if the strings didn't flatten for any reason. Expensive..but the best I have used, IMO. La Bella super steps are nice but I doubt you'll like the exposed core.. and you need to protect that core over the bridge to avoid breakage.. which might be hard if you clean them out.. so all in all..back to DR. -
Stored in a garage..??? hmmmmm, you will want to hear that fired up as any damp could have ruined it internally... and the speaker cones might not have fared too well there either. Not really sure of TE prices but the combo £250 tops, IMO, and the cab £100. That is in VGC, just my 2p....... It needs to be run back in a good few times to see if any damage lurks.. I'd suggest
Funnily enough, I really like that! You can really build up a picture of something's worth, and it's good and bad points when you read the reasons for a number of people selling it on... Also, if you sell something and then decide you want it back months or even years later, there's a much higher chance of being able to do that if you sell on here. As others have said though, it's definitely not a seller's market at the moment. Not the end of the world as long as you don't need a quick sale.
The point about history is valid, agree. Maybe I am just being too precious about this one thing. This is a great place to buy/sell in general, IME,..not that I have done loads but it definitely feeds the GAS..and promotes it. I am trawling the FS for stuff I don't need and can't afford, but even so... even a P.A..!!!
I have loads on my low B, but you can't hear it in a live situation. I find it bothers beginners, but that seems to be down to technique. Does it bother you?
A lot is technique, but then there is no point if it doesn't work. My basses are quite low and someone who digs in could make it sound wretched but loud..but then I couldn't/wouldn't even play their bass. I've always tended to be clean after hearing muself tracked solo in the studio for the first time when I was young. I was horrified and worked on it. I didn't realise that some players got away with this in the mix.
-
I agree, I would offer it here first, but prices can be keen and there is no garauntee it will sell. I don't use e-bay and I have a bass for sale which will probably go to the Gallery. The point about it going to a nice bass player here who 'deserves' it is ok but some kit also goes through quite a lot of hands as well. One of the things that puts me off here, is how some stuff goes through a lot of people pretty quickly. There may be reasons for it, but I wouldn't happy if a bass I had built and had had for 17 plus years got passed around very quickly. Maybe not rational, but I wouldn't like to see that.
.... Neo will evolve, inspite of the Chinese, and ceramic speakers will ultimately be filed away with propellers, radiograms, steam trains and yards, feet and inches.
possibly..and I DID say fad was maybe too strong a word in my original post but as for ceramics and their longevity..?? maybe, but then they said that about valves.. If I heard a NEO cab I liked and the price was good... I didn't say I wouldn't ever buy one. All cabs have compromises, IMO...depends what you want or have to live with.
