The best soul funk band ever IMHO.. with a fantastic vid... always puts me a good mood... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waSM0rXDLys
Good call..!!

I think these sounds can also be played with most dull strings with attack...so either a thumb nail or pick with a subtle mute will be getting there the rest can be brought on by EQ'ing the attack.

I wouldn't but that is because all the Ibanez basses I have seen recently have been ones to put straight back in the rack. It is very hard for any brand that makes the cheaper product to suddenly be taken seriously charging a lot more. They would have to work very hard to convince that the product is worth the difference without people thing where they cut costs in their cheaper lines.. It works both ways as well... if you are a bespoke maker and all of a sudden you put out a cheaper line, people might think..what is wrong with it..?? As a one off..then maybe you can sell it.. But this idea does not work for me...

They have written a lot of songs that have been covered by so many others..that is the most impressive thing for me.

we need to bulk buy

I like a light 118 or 120 on my basses at times and I have no problem but maybe look for a balanced set of upwards or 125. I think D'addarios XL pros are 125 tapered and are a decent mid priced set, IMV
A Kent consortium, that'd be interesting.
I could do with a bigger rig occasionally..but it could be a lot of money put aside for little useage...if you could offset this with a rig share...hmmm..might be an idea. FWIW..I need a 6x10... but have been thinking about getting a Aguilar 115 and 2x10 as that would still fit in my car... and do the same sort of job... Expensive for a secondary backup rig though, just for me. sorry for the hijack..but it is a bump

My main worry would be WHY had it blown..?
-
KD Lang was very good, IMV...and what is the problem with Hugh Laurie..? he can certainly play. So, he has something to plug...that is the whole point of the show..!!!!

You would play for the horrible little geek as he is as hot as anything right now, AIUI, which means the gig is right up there. With that on your CV you'd get invited to play other gigs on par in stature. The money would surely be good also, so it is an endorsement of his level and the fact that you are on the same playing-wise.

Whats the hardest bassline you've learnt and why?

I recall the slap part in 5-G ( J Berlin) being a pig at the time. And he says he can't slap !!!!!!!!! Anything the guy does is very very clean http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47aYmY0QLLc -
I think new strings are critical on a B St... and if the bass has sounded good before then that is good news and you may just have a duff batch....but you8 should hear this across the set There have been a few threads on this recently and I am currently trying to get a new set of DR's to sound good, but it isn't working so I'll have to write them off. Any new set should work well enough
Basically, I've got a mate who plays piano to an amazing standard. We've had a couple of mess abouts, him on piano, me on bass before, but we've decided over Easter a group of us are going to meet up. Now we're just trying to think up songs that we can play. Ideally we want to keep into popular music that we all know and enjoy, rather than going into obscure stuff for the sake of finding a piano part. We're all to a pretty high standard of playing, although I have to admit I'm a bit worried about what the singer will be able to handle, and theres a couple on the suggestions we've made I'm not sure he'll be able to sing, but he can give it a go! Just to get an idea, these are our suggestions so far- Your Song, Elton John Infatuation, Maroon 5 It Ends Tonight, All American Rejects (I don't actually know this one, so I'll have to give it a listen) This Aint A Love Song, Scouting for Girls Lovecats, The Cure (admittedly, this was my selfish choice. I wanted to give my double bass abilities a bit of a test, I've not been playing long) So you get an idea of the sort of stuff. Coldplay, Oasis, anything like that really. I figured this is the place to ask, anyway! Thanks!
I think you are looking at this too intently and specifically...he should be able to make up his parts to most decent songs.. Chain Gang. Chrissie Hynde... our keys plays a great piano part on that, IMO If he can handle Honky Tonk and you want an easy song.. Sweat Home Alabama. Oliver's Army, but to get it off close, it is NO easy busk, IMO. Sympathy for the Devil But I go with the approach that most songs can handle a piano part..so blast away. As long as the band makes room for him, it isn't a problem, IMO

Sounds great, Pete Good fun..... if Bootsy can't make it funky, then there is no hope.
IME quality of build is far more important for getting a good sounding B than simply adding another inch to the scale length.
Again...gotta agree. The arguments of 20 years ago of scale V bolt-on V neck-thru etc etc ...have largely been sorted now and I don't believe there is one defintive element in that equation that is any better than the other.
2. Has the B string ever sounded good?
I'd start from here. It is not a given, IME, for all B's to sound good.. I always say it defines the 5st bass and have heard more poor B's than good ones.
Just as an aside,I know that Yamahas official line now is that the BB stands for 'broad bass',but I seem to remember that the bass was originally designed in conjunction with Bunny Brunel, hence the name. Am I alone in thinking this?
No..I would have said the same thing. Also, being seeing the attraction of a PJ config these days.
Yeah, there has been talk for years that Verdine doesn't play everything live. You can't knock their recordings though.
You know what started me thinking this....it was Lenny White's fist solo album which had a few guest slots on it...as they all did. Must have been around 1977 and Marcus M was on it as an 18 yr old..??? and played a slap line ..as he does. Verdine's featured track was a rather mundane offering and I recall thinking that only made the final cut for his name as EWF were huge at the time. IIRC, they even had a another bass player play a line underneath it. Anyway, not wanting to go over old ground as this sentiment has been aired before and not wanting to detract from the thread..too much.

The JO5 for me...as I like Jazzes. I'd probably add a JE pre to make things easier when the passive struggles. It is a fave trick of mine that I can get the JE to be a spunkier version of the passive tone of my jazzes. I prefer the pretty J styling as well and am less a MM humbucker type person these days so JO5 all round. As a bass demo, the 55-02 is more than decent though.

I'd give the girl a chance to shine, if you can find some songs that work for her. If you can't then you have a decision to make. I would guess you are all feeliing a little frustrated by the feedback you get but well done for putting the vids up for appraisal Myself, I don't care what it takes behind closed doors to make something work live and no one needs to know... as long as the end result is good. Getting the band as a whole to reconcile with that critique takes a bit of maturity and a few diplomatic moves though as no one likes to be taken apart.
