1. IIRC the MM has 12 or 15db of bass boost and that will wipe out your top strings on a lot of amps and cabs... you just can't run that sort of boost without a lot of hi end on the cabs and you'll need newish strings etc etc .. to get the top to cut through Basically you have flooded the sound with too much bass.
2. I'll PM you both if you'd like.
3. You might be too late... I see one retail outlet has already jumped on this and put up prices even though they say the kit is in stock and not a new order... Not naming names at this time....
4.
Because it's honestly rated. 9 out of 10 drivers with ratings higher than 200 watts can't actually make use of more than half their power rating before running out of excursion, and any more power added gets no additional output. Ampeg rates its drivers closer to the actual power the can make use of, not what it takes to cook the voice coils.
This... either Ampeg use really poor drivers or there is quite a bit of nonsense in some speakers ratings. Even to this day, I still never run an amp at the same rating as the cab and expect to get away with it for long. Quiet jazzer excepted.
5. Go with the Epi and look to change the amp soonest..as the Epi kit is in a different class, IMO.
6. FWIW, I think a 2x10 as a standalone is not the best cab. It would be far too easy to drive it too hard. Unless you really do mean you are doing quiet gigs If you must have a 210..get a beefy Eden XLT SH. If you must only have one cab, then the NEO 212 looks interesting and in budget.
7. hmmm... I agree that it would have been nice if the OP had updated this thread and thanked a few people who were able to help. In the spirit of things ect ect ...
8.
We suspect (although have no proof) that it was our former guitarist who was fired last year!!
Thought it might be something like that.. If you can be bothered, call that number sometime down the line just to say hullo..and then you'll know.
9.
Strange one last night! Played a new club (for us) in High Wycombe. When we got there, they had a sign up saying "sorry no live music tonight due to band illness!!" We spoke to the promoter who showed us a text message he had recieved from someone alledging they were from our band saying we had to cancel as one of of us is ill! No body has any idea who sent it!! On another note, I struggled with the sound of the Ray, as the G string was inaudible! no amount of EQ twiddling could sort it out.
hmmmm..sounds dodgy. Who would cancel by text anyway...?? not sure I would want to be notified of such a thing like that.
10. Since you don't want to go to the cost of a new set of DR's you could ring up one of the shops and ask them if they have singles. I did this with a LA Bella super step, but it broke after 1 day so the rest of the set was pretty lively...and a shop supplied me with the one...but you are getting into fraught ground, IMV. You don't say how old the set is..but 'if not too bad'..I'd suggest a good couple of weeks, a new string will stick out like a sore thumb so you are going to have to clean the others up anyway which involves taking them off the bass and cleansing and then putting back on again. This is, in itself, a gamble as those strings could be weakened if you aren't very careful. I can't believe you are going to a gig without a spare set anyway. Buy a cheap spare set of Elites or something. I am not sure how discerning you are but you don't have a spare set and the strings sound not too bad... sounds like you don't really need to stick at the DR brand, especially if you think they are too expensive. You could alway try to get a a SH DR Hi Beam G string here, but again, I'd be wary of putting on a string that has been used on anything other than the bass or model it is going to go back on.
11. Hmm.. this is a common problem IMV..but am not sure how bespoke that speaker is...but since you say it is out of production the problem is the same. You might be in a better position getting info from the maker..and also sorcing a recone kit as it does indeed sound like the coil has given up. You can try the usual speaker/cone repairers but they will need to have the cone kit from somewhere. I had this problem with PAS which was a great speaker rated at 175watts for 10" but no one could get the cone..and if they used their own assemblies, could not garauntee anymore than 100 watts..if that. I have no idea how PAS squeezed 175watt out of it then, but make of that, what you can..!!!!!!! If you are techical..you might consider a swap out speaker from a current line but you may need to remodel the cab somewhat..and then that still seems little like trial and error to me. Gone are the days of just bunging a replacement speaker in the box..but since you have only a single you could match up the porting size and see how that works. At least you don't have another speaker in the cab to have to balance with and that could have complicated things. It seems you have no choice..I recently tracked down a replacement speaker and my chassis is still current and available via import..and that is the best solution but not an option here. I will be interested in how this experiment turns out The deltalite 2510 was the speaker I ended up using..and I wasn't convinced, but others say it worked great as a replacement PAS.
12. I think Ashdown is ok..but if you have abit of money you might be able to get stuff from GK and Hartke if you consider them up a level. I'd put them on the same sort of par, myself...along with PV. Second hand quality gear..? You can get very good cabs from Eden SH. TE always is about for a good price. It is likely to have been around for a long time, and the days when it was top notch gear have long gone, IMO, but TE still does a job and goes for very little money for what it can do. People use the term bombproof and it is deffo sturdy, IMO. For the better gear, £600 could get you a very good amp second hand and you'd probably need another 5 for a cab outside of the brands I have mentioned above. Weightier gear is not so desirable with a lot of fogeys with bad backs and small cars so there is quite a lot of bang for the money if you can shift the weight. Just my 2p..and others will swear by certain names for their own reasons.
13. I personally think Ampeg have been living off their reputation for way too long...and that reputation, I agree, was formed mainly on the back of limted competition anyway. Now there is so much more better stuff about in every respect and the only foothold they still retain is high power valve amps. Personally I prefer Boogie soundwise, but only soundwise..!!! They (Ampeg) are still very active in placing their product on high profile stages but even that position is tenuous and I'd reckon they would loose most of that IF the player had to buy that kit. You might say that about a lot of endorsees though, but Ampeg is all about the big valve amp sound. The rest of their product line is average, IMO. If you had a poll of what backline kit would be supplied for bass players if budget and availability was not the issue, you might see a very diferent pciture. Ampeg used to be the first choice on the kit rider as it was the most widely available and a known choice. The Ampeg amps I have used relatively recently have woeful EQ stages, ...esp anything involving the SVT pro type pre amp, IMO. The valve amps still have that big hump though... Still iconic but its star has faded. If they stop with the big valve amps, I'd say game over
14. They hardly want the volume and the potential bleed in a live room so an 8x10 is overkill most of the time. I'd go with the 2x10..although Ampeg never used to have decent power ratings on their 10"'s and a 200w 2x10 isn't so great, IMO. You could use a power soak, I guess.
15. i agree it is good, and it is also good to realise how out of your depth you might be...or can cope, whichever is the case. I touched on this in another thread and I guess it can come across as a kind of "I played with so and so" which might not be such an attractive post, but the only point I meant to put across is that talent is everything and the name doesn't mean a thing. It is interesting how these seriously good people that you may encounter end up doing what sort or gig.
16.
You used to audition bands after hearing a CD? Weird! Playing an audition to get a gig, haha.
I talked to a pub about gigs, told him we were looking to play in the area and he said he holds audition nights on a thursday which we could play and he would give us a few quid or beers for doing so. If we passed that, he might offer us gigs.. After I stopped laughing, I told him a few things and we ended up with 4 gigs for the year. You have to think that they get many many enquiries so you just have to deliver your sell in a way that makes them realise you are worth booking. But it is their business so humour them as well.... There is cocky, arrogant and confident. Make sure you are the right sort of confident, but as I said, if you go for the big sell and greatest thing since sliced bread, you are going to look pretty stupid if you can't deliver.
17.
are you thinking about getting one?
I have a nice little compact rig which will do most of my gigs. I am thinking about a larger one and my thinking was this. My possible wishlist SWR900 plus Goli snr 6x10 or another 6x10 cabs DB750/751 with AG DB cabs. and a few other ideas. The thing that is causing me to deliberate ( aprt from the money ) is that this will likely not be cheap and also isn't a rig I would cart around often enough. I'd get more mileage out of a heavier amp than heavier bulkier speakers though. A 38lb amp plus flighcase isn't THAT bad and I wouldn't get rid of my current amp anyway.
18. I did think that the design was pretty good and that they had to discontinue as DJ left...but after a suitable period of time, they could and should resurrect it with a subtle change here and there so as to avoid any squabbles about it being the same bass ect ect ..

20. Really..??? With the best will in the world, these drivers might not be produced anymore..if that is the case, and the whole point of any given cab may be that they are dedicated drivers for a specific cab, then getting a replacement might be hard for any cab maker simply because the manufacturered batch has been discontinued. I suppose a few cabs makers might have some lying around for this type of contingency but then again, they may not. In the past, I have wanted recones on a a few speakers and the only ones that were widely available and therefore easy to get reconed were JBL's. In the U.S, they tend to have replacement kits on popular lines but whether any given type of bespoke speaker falls into that catergory, I might doubt. And in some cases it is cheaper to get a new speaker than get it repaired. If as BFM says, this is a temporary blip with NEO speakers, then the problem may lessen. But it would be an issue for me, just IME.!!!!
21.
BA has a very clear policy. Quote: "Small musical instruments may be carried as hand baggage if they are under 126cm (50in), as part of your free hand baggage allowance." Don't know about other carriers. BA is my airline of choice If in doubt check with the the airline.
This..and get it in writing, if you are using a gig bag. Personally, this is why you keep a full flight case though.
22.
So I finally got a chance to use my DB750 & one of my DB112's at rehearsals with some decent volume last night. ............ Anyway, just wanted to share. . .
I have to say, this rig DB750/751 plus 2 BD112's would be my desired main rig with maybe a DB212/DB115 and DB210 for larger gigs that I would have help with
23. I don't know how this company goes about things, but I talked in GREAT detail to my luthier about the extras I wanted so the first thng I would do, if you are not sure, is e-mail the maker directly and get them to suggest a route to go down. The thing is, you don't know how this will turn out until you get it, so you need to make sure you have specced everything...Everything, in writing.
