I would be very very wary of buying cabs with bespoke NEO drivers now. If a line has been discontinued and you have a problem with that chassis, then getting repair kits could be a problem.. particuarly in the UK. It can be a pain to source a current speaker from the cab maker as it is, but if that cab line has stopped production and the bespoke speaker/chassis is no longer made for that manufacturer, you could have trouble sourcing a replacement speaker...and have to buy an off-the-shelf one and hope it is close. Now certain makers aren't very forth-coming of their speaker specs anyway so good luck with that one. And if the cab has multiple chassis', then you might be in for quite a bill replacing them all if only one speaker goes. That is without getting into any remodelling of the cab to accomodate a different spec. I had this problem with PAS speakers which SWR stopped using..and I can see the same problem cropping up again with discontinued lines. The U.S said they could source a cone repair kit but if you ask UK repairers, they couldn't make the speaker with that same spec after repair. I tried more than a few repairers in the U.K and they all said the same thing.
When buying the head I was expecting paying 200 US for the delivery, suddenly it became 500 US what it was way too much, I checked some UK sites and Parcel Network quote me £100 so I booked it, a long story short they didnt have any idea about my delivery so after a week a cancelled it and we arrange a new delivery from an US company for 350 US. The good thing is that for some reason I wasnt charged any vat or customs duty. Ive decided to go for a db750 because I was attracted by its good reviews and liked its eq simplicity and power. I would have considered a db751 but the classic tag of the 750 was more attractive.
Ok, thanks. Not good for the postage. I thought there were a few issues with U.S DB750's swapping to UK voltage...? I guess a UK amp will run to about £1000 SH here so if you can get one over from the U.S for there or thereabouts inc post etc etc , I wouldn't rule it out.

Sounds great. I thought it was a very good model..shame they had to discontinue.
-
Great looking rig... What sort of problems did you have importing a DB750..and would you have considered a DB751?

I see a few of the AE's series have gone up already in £'s... Hmmmmm

I had a Headhunters album which introduced a few players but mainly I got a jazz gig and had all these standards thrown at me, so I thought I better do some research.

Would you trust your bass in the hold on a plane?
JTUK replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Full flight-case in the hold and never had any problems. Never had a prorblem with excess either but haven't been over recently. As long as the bass was within baggage limits, there was no problem at all. We tended to use the better airlines like BA or Luthansa who had..at the time.. decent limits and a decent handling policy. My case isn't moulded for anything specific so if I can find the keys to lock it ..if that is allowed... and you want to use it, then no problem if you handle the collection etc etc ..but I am in Kent, so hopefully there is someone closer. I have Hiscox cases and they are ok but NOT the same IMV..and I wouldn't put one of them in a hold if you can't trust the handlers. -
Well, there's Fe16N2..... and you heard it first on Basschat.
I can't be bothered with such an idiotic post.

I used to like the Starlicks setries which would feature 8 or so players and you could pick out a few things from each. I agree that most are better at demoing than they are at teaching tho'

ooohh maybe not a bad time. They prices are good....i

It seems to me that China are seeing how far they can run with this IF they have a virtual monopoloy at this time... If the price gets too silly then other minerla producing ountries, might see a hole in the market and produce..and then in time we could end up with a glut, so forcing the price down...China will hardly want that I agree, this is a temporary marketing ploy. As for the speaker industry..it will prompt alternatives and R&D, IMO.

Might not be the right time to put my Flam5 up in the Gallery then..?
-
Another point..if you have a CD..make it live..what is the point of a studio CD when you are selling a live-act..? and agents tend to only earn their money for the better paid gigs...don't bother in pubs, IME.
-
The legalities aside.... venues might ask for a demo but whether they listen to it is another thing. It might just be an excuse to not go through a booking process at that time. IME, you can either be in demand or well known enough and this will trump any type of audition type process, or you can go in with a cheaper deal or any manner of things. It boils down to this, IMO..why does that venue need to book YOUR band as opposed to the many many others? You may find decent venues inundated with hundreds of bands and a website and CD are expenses that can be a waste of time. If a venue is hard to get into..I'll do a personal meet and see how we get on face to face but the fact remains that most places are oversubscribed massivley and you have to hard sell to a degree to get past that. I'd be interested to know who thinks their websites are worth the money. Ours isn't expensive for a dedicated non-myspace website but is still a cost For gigs, we do a mixture or personal contacts, cold calls backed up by CD/website with a pop-up media player, but if I am chatting to a manager, I make sure I have everything I need at that time to accept a date on the spot..as soon as you walk away from the meet, you tend to lose momentum. You could always just be full of it..and tell them you'll blow away their best band...but you have to be good on your word...and the best band, musically isn't necessarily the best draw..and the manager will love the best draw the most.

I use 2x GS112's and they are great........but, I've said this before, do not judge them by using a single GS as it frankly isn't worth it for anything but a quiet jazzer or low key rehearsal. For anyone who is only used to one...you don't know what you are missing. As much as I am a fan of 2 ...I would trash the single use of... it is chalk and cheese, IMV. A single can keep up with a loudish set-up but you lose so much as I discovered on a recent gig when a cab didn't work. I was chasing a sound all night whereas a pr will put away a medium size venue with a very very powerful drummer easily with a LOT of low end. Just IME and my 2p
Hasn't Jim just scrapped the ceramic range? Does that mean he's selling nowt now?
yes, I recall a that. Personally, I wasn't that bothered about NEO..but did think the AE212 concept had legs at 55lbs. What that will do now with ceramics, I don't know, weightwise....but a single 212 cab in ceramics hasn't been attractive from a weight POV, IMO hmmmm

Go to the audition, get the job and then worry about anything else....money, gigs, etc etc etc Having said that... if they can't be specific about the audition times, that is a black mark. But I'd keep an open mind about it all until you get to see concrete details, have played with them etc etc ..
-
Two single 12"'s..?? might be a more expensive way to buy new though.. The GB NEOX212 is rated ...if you can get past its looks. What about the Uber series.... a 212 with a twist?

Big envy Glad it worked out, sounds a dream rig
He's one of the guitarists. They always used to swap around for that number. Don't know why. Maybe GAD doesn't slap?
Indeed. She is pretty capable but never does this number as far as I know. It is a pretty basic part but what works in the confines of the line-up works. -
I seriously need to stop looking at the for sale section! I keep seeing awesome basses for awesome prices and I'm slowly convincing myself that I NEED them. I don't! I must be loosing my head. I've got a brand new Shuker Jazz which plays sounds and looks the business and I'm thinking of trading it in. Why? Thyere must be some help group or medication I can take
Indeed. I only have one thing to sell..and am having a hard time coming to terms with that...maybe I don't want to do it enough but I could easy buy another 2 cabs ( one is in a shop, though ).... neither of which I need, another amp, ditto, which I am hoping will not crop up in the too near future..and another pair of cabs if they appear here. I was mighty glad the pre amp I was interested was withdrawn, but I can't stop looking..and I would say I am 99% happy with my sound and gear.

You'll get plenty of opnions and you either luck out and find a brand that works or you might have to do the hard slog and go through a good few sets. I have done that over the past year and am now back of DR's. I've used DR's for years but got a new bass with strings on that I quite liked so I thought I'd try out a few. D'addario XL pro steel are ok..and I like the Taper B La Bella Super steps..again tapered. La Bella ..something Rocking...ok Elites were ok and cheap DR long necks Ken Smith..have these to put on I like a taper on the B string so that governs my choice but after all this past years work, I am back to DR and might try Newtone is I can find what I want. DR's feel better for me in tension and tone..but for 2 weeks of use..or a tad longer, all the above will work for me. I clean them up and use them over and over so haven't felt the need to bin any set yet...if I really don't like them, they come off pretty quickly though.
Thanks for the comments so far. I've had a pair of Agi 112's in the past and loved them (can't remember why I got rid of them really), so I'd wondered about going back down that track, but then I do like the Epi so I'm wondering if actually the LMII is just a bit too clean and whether I'm really after something a bit more 'coloured'; dare I say it, but maybe even Ashdown, Ampeg type?? As for the band set up, it's in a church so is pretty small and we're not playing at any great volume either.
If you like Epifanis..which for my taste are just a bit too wallowy out front, then I can't see a MarkBass being the problem. Both is good kit, IME. I think the biggest single factor is the voice of the bass and then all the rest. In general, I think people can ask too much from the amp and cab when the bass isn't in the same ballpark as the sound they have in their head. That makes the task impossible to really fix from an amp/cab POV, IMO.
The legends didn't sound like that either.... unless they were going through a room full of recording equipment! I've heard Duck Dunn sound very ordinary on a gig.
ha ha ...you want to hear Iron Maiden then without FOH
