Well - the replacement strings came...a 4 string set and a seperate B string so a bit cobbled together then. Undaunted, I took a chance and put them on and shazzam, my Shuker is singing to me once again. No intonation problems and the strings look, feel and sound like Sunbeams. The ones I sent back must have been a Friday afternoon set I guess
I strill think DR's suit me best all things considered but wasn't impressed to get a duff set recently. I suppose I could explain it away by saying not bad for nigh on 20 years and numerous sets, but they aren't cheap so this does not want to become a patttern. Looked into Newtone, I can't see any tapered so maybe custom..?? also what is a diamond and platimun.. nickel and stainless..? Prices seem ok and worth a punt

I must admit I read the thread as vintage 5st maple board so I thought we were talking about a MM maple board for £50. I wasn't sure MM did 5 strings early enough to quality as vintage though.
I have the chance of first refusal on a Vintage Stringray 5-stringer maple board for £50. Are these any cop? For £50 is this a no-brainer? PS. I don't wish to start a cheap 'Sue Ryder' bass flame war though. JTUK take note!
Do you have pics..?

The point about B strings. I have a 5 on which I know the B is very good.. I wouldn't have brought it otherwise, but I have been through a few brands of strings more as an experiment on what is available, rather that the usual DR's..and I have a current set of Daddario XL's on and these are the least convincing B. I am prepared to accept this may be an indifferent batch bu was attracted by the tapered B in a certain gauge. Maybe this experiment is over, now. But, if you are considering 5's now..there is an glorious looking Overwater in FS and also a Sadowsky recently. Both looked the business
Do you chaps all abandon the existing kit for the new bass? How long before you return to the others? Blademan
No, I have my 2 main basses that do different things but I am getting a favourite out of the 2 but I do need both on gigs, I think, especially as I have only had both around a year. My 3rd is now not used, and I can't see me using it soon, tbh so I am coming to terms with selling it.

If you are buying from the States... which courier?

Hearing your rig played by another bass player
JTUK replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Amps and Cabs
My early 80's MM was one the best basses I've ever had but the pre can be very harsh. IIRC, the sweep is +-15db and that is a lot to abuse. Of course, you don't have to use all that Rock solid neck, lovely bass. To the OP. there is only so much you can get from listening to someone else on your set-up..and I think you may be clutching at straws if you hope that you sound so much better out front that you do close up. What are we talking here...20 mtrs..? Large sound stages..?? whole new ball game. -
Can't help with the dating, but that looks a very good example. I seem to recall I was offered a 135 for £350 a while back.
I would never buy a KSD, read some of the old threads on talkbass before you do. They tend to be junk and Ken Smith refuses to take any responsibility even though he sold them and his name is on it. They are cheap Asian imports with a big markup.
Sounds a familar sort of theme.... although I am not allowed to say such a thing.... It's ok..an in-joke on another thread, sorry.
-
I think I get it. Some people want their new bass to be a bargain and comparable to a few name brands and aren't too happy when people doubt that. Others just want a project. All fine by me

Good for me, always liked Haslip even with his wacky style.
-
No, no help. Can't sing well enough to have to crack it either. A few la la's and that is it fior me.
That's hardly fair...none of my Fenders have had all the original parts on 6 months after getting them!
It seems like these basses are getting quite a few mods straight off..have already seen neck shims and pup threads. You'll find plenty of un-modded Fenders out there, of course...even if I have always thought the plate bridges to be a weak point, myself.
-
I thought I wouldn't be able to check into this thread until tomorrow. Bassassin I don't have any Fenders, sorry. mcnach It may have helped if I hadn't trashed people's new toys but there is no new science here. But if it makes you feel better that I go and find one and then come back to tell you it has confirmed my posts, that will be ok? Deal..!!
No pick here either cool looking bass
I would say that is a pretty dull old recording in terms of the presense of the bass sound. I certainly don't recall it being that muted and it is lacking in attack. Maybe he should have used the pick

I am most confident in my assessment and the pics on here and some of the posts confirm it to me. 'what do you want for £60?' seems to be a theme in more than a few. I have to say from the pics here alone... not in the least interested in finding out any more. I am glad some people are satisfied with their purchase, however.
JT.....Dont get so excited..... It's not a Status but it does the job, It's acceptable for Jamnights and rough gigs. Is it worth £60..........IMHO, yes. Now........take a deep breath and give it up. You are achieving precisely nothing and expanding energy in order to do so. Just my 2p.
ok I just keep coming back to this thread as I am stuck in the office waiting for a few things to complete Personally I wouldn't waste a set of strings on one myself. Yep, just read through the entire thread. I know all I need to know now.
-
Bitter, that I don't have one..?? ok.. I agree that I am lumping them in with a lot of other basses that would just not be worth even looking at either. What makes these so special..the £60:00 price tag..? The pics aren't bad but if I see one on a gig..I promise I will give it a good going over and report back. Very much doubt they'll see the light of day there though. Tell you what, I have a friend who has a car for sale...it has 4 wheels and goes, it is yours for £150..you like a bargain, don't you?
-
Ou7shined yeah, I know. LMAO I was just having fun and I, too, will be resurrecting this thread. I will also think of it when I see threads asking about this replacement pup or neck shims....just subjects off the top of my head, mind, that might end up being an issue in some distant future..or even sooner I understand the point of fads and fashions on here. Have seen them from time to time and then watch how many of these greatly lauded pieces of kit are quietly put up in FS, it does make you wonder what criteria people use to buy such things. It has been fun ..and an hey, £60 isn't bad. You'll get that back from all the work it gets you.

How many of you have more than one Bass...
JTUK replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
I am surprised so many regular posters don't gig. I can understand, maybe 20 plus gigging years on the trot, taking some time out and being undecided whether to continue, or needing to recharge batteries, or even if players are thin on the ground, otherwise, I don't know how people motivate themselves to keep playing without anything at the end of it. -
I made a concerted choice that this current band would be a rehearsed band. I really didn't want to do the standards this time round. If you put the time in at your homework then you can get a long way to limiting time that your don't or can't have, rehearsing, but I had had enough of jamming the songs at gigs. I get enough of that on deps and there is a place for it, but not for the regular band

Hearing your rig played by another bass player
JTUK replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in Amps and Cabs
Last night I played a club gig with 2 other bands and to save time and hassle I left my rig on stage for the other two bands bass players to use. Not sure what one of the bass players was using some 5 string thing which just sounded muddy and did not really do much for me but the other guy was using a Stingray and I have to say it sounded awesome!! I guess it was a modern Stingray as it had a 3 band EQ but through my rig it just sang and was exactly the sound that I hope I omit when playing my basses through the rig. Has this every happened to anyone else and do you think that it is human nature to always think that someone else's bass always sounds better through our rigs? Or did my ears tell me everything and a Stingray is really what I need to nail "my sound" through my rig?
or...he may have been dead chuffed with the sound you gave him..?? Generally, I think very good sounding basses can plug into anything and work...so it is your core sounds that need to be there rather than go chasing all sorts of amp EQ. Do you think your basses sounds really good ? -
Anyone else have trouble getting started after the break ?
No. Just pick the right paced song as far as we are concerned. We have a few that can do this but it needs some thought. Also, when we pick new songs..we know where they will work best and some songs work as starters and closers... We try to close the 1st set the way we will start the 2nd. In pubs, breaks are essential, IMV so everyone can mingle and chat and it gives all a break from that incessant racket in the corner If people want more... then they will let you know.

Is it fair to ask why..?
-
Fair enough, it's sound reasoning. I just disagree with your assumptions. Still, like I said earlier (and tom1946 gave evidence for), I feel like you might be looking at these the same way at these people looked at japcrap years ago. Even if they're still not your cup of tea, I think you'd be surprised.
ok, no problem. For me... I like a bass that I have a type of empathy with...any old block of wood doesn't work. I think you can tell if you are going to get this just by picking one up...most you wouldn't have to bother doing that. Things like the neck joint and the feel of the neck would be a cause for concern. even the finish on the neck would be an indicator. The paint job as well. That is without getting to the metalwork which will likely stain or flake after some use...that is if the pegs can hold them in tune. The metal itself will be poor. Not a problem for the bridge plate, but the saddles and grub screws..??? And the pickup..??? If someone is still using one in 2-3 years time, would probably say 6 months, even with original parts, then maybe I'll review my cheap and nasty post. In fact, post your experiences after that time.
