Hey folks, Finally, after two week wait, I got an annoucement from local post office, that my box has arrived. The problem is, when I really turn my amp (Genz Benz) up, (and I have to, in a band situation), when I try to switch between instruments using that AB switch, at the moment of pushing the switch knob, there's a noticeable, semi-loud 'tick'. It also happens even with instruments' volume knobs completely off. I'm not expecting something major from a 15 pound-thing, but hey, it's an AB box, it cannot be simpler in wiring such a thing, but I'm doing pop shows on TV where such stuff (side 'ticks' and other unwanted noises) just cant happen, period. I mean, are those unwanted noises during switch are common in these AB boxes? I'll be contacting seller, I'll let you know. Any advice appreciated, Laimis

Nah, not really. Well, their email SHOULD be working, or if it's broke they'd spot it I think - in the end, I'm the only customer in the world emailing them, am I? Laimis

Thanks man, but I'm not up to chasing him in some guitar forum - there was an email given for contacting the shop, and they have to answer to them. I'll just wait and see how it goes. Thanks Laimis

bump, anyone? I've written an email to those guys at VisionGuitars on Thursday, but got no response up to this moment.. I'm writing them once again, but if this silence continues, I'll have to open a dispute in Paypal I think.. Any experiences with this? Laimis

Looks nice, although I wouldnt want to do a solo on this tune on a gig without bass not being 'underneath' everything...
-
Hey guys, Anyone had previous experience with these guys - http://www.visionguitars.co.uk/ ? I've ordered a small A/B switch box some two weeks ago, and usually stuff from UK to LTU comes no longer than a week. I thought that it was our local courriers' fault, because they usually do a poor job handling packages, but I've emailed those guys at VisionGuitars yesterday asking about what courrier did they use, so that I can get a better idea, who's handling my package down here, in Lithuania, but they don't seem to be too quick with responding. I wouldnt be complaining, but I have my TV record sessions coming up next week, and I have to use both synth and electric basses, which means too much fiddling around without that damn AB Box.. any input appreciated, Laimis

Cheers, Jake, that would be highly appreciated, man!! What are you shedding on your synth at the moment anyway? easy Laimis

Hey guys, This one seems the be one of the best known Jamiroquais tunes, and one of most popular between bassists, but I had a hard time finding a transcription of this tune.. I looked at Bassement but couldnt find it also. Anyone has this? Want to shed it on my Microkorg synth.. easy Laimis

Found this by accident, it's taken from Kylie's "On A Night Like This Tour": Band Drums: Andrew Small Percussion: James Mack Keyboards: Steve Turner Guitar: James Hayton Bass: Chris Brown Seems to be the same band, but probably with percussion out, as I couldnt hear any throughout the gig. And, yeah, it's a bit distracting to watch Kylie's videos that's why you want to get MP3 and stick with that, guys And check out "Spinning Around" from this very gig - some crazy fast 16th note stuff!! Killin!

Hey guys, Yesterday I've came across this spectacular Kylie's live performance in London, and I couldnt help myself stop listening to the whole gig, and bass-playing wise it was something else - full of tasty pop lines played on electric (Jazz Bass stands out most) and some wicked synth stuff ("Secret", "Slow") too. Then there's "In Your Eyes", where verse is played on synth, and chorus on electric, so it's good for practice to switch between two. And check out that pre-chorus reharmonization!!!!! I was trying to find out who played bass on this show, but I couldnt find anything particular other than her usual bassplayers' name like Steve Lewison (Simply Red), Jenni Tarma and Phil Spalding). In addition, during the last tune Kylie asks audience to thank the 'guys in the band' and mentions "James, Andrew, Chris and Steve". I've checked Steve Lewison's credits, but he didnt seem to play on this. Any thoughts?

All good advice, but make sure you have a thorough understanding of harmony and that you can really walk the line well harmonic-wise, BEFORE you dip into any sort of rhythmic bits. It's just one big mistake to start playing triplets, six'es against fours and using pedal technique or anything like that before you know your harmonic stuff, man. easy Laimis

Musicals [Fame, Grease, what have you]
Faithless replied to nobodysprefect's topic in General Discussion
WOw, thanks for the link, Garry, that Brecker solo is just out of control... And, is that Johnny P on bass? Really cool eitherway... Laimis -
Rob, you should check out how Hawkins plays the real thing (trad jazz) with Gerald Clayton... He's a complete monster.

Well, yeah it's an eBook, but nonetheless good. The good thing about it is that you don't need to wait for postman and you may bring it with yourself everywhere in your laptop. There was a discount offer, but it's ended by Dec 1, anyway if I were you I'd still save a few bucks (it's 15 pounds total) and get it as fast as I could - you can't really learn this sort of stuff just by catching random advice (even if it's good) or getting some random book, because there's loads of sh*t out there - there must be a systematic approach to this, from A to Z. easy Laimis

Don't know if you've spotted that, but on Tuesday fellow BC member and a fabulous teacher Joe Hubbard presented his new book on "Walking Basslines:Demistyfing the Creative Process". It's a very sophiscicated book, focusing on primarily harmonic outlines of walking lines, where you can really hear the changes in your lines, and imposing different lines creation devices. If you want to really deepen your knowledge in this subject, I highly recommend getting that book - it's pretty much all you really need to get solid in this, of course, unless you want to pick a lesson with the man himself...

I was looking after some Dean Brown Band live footage from his Europe tour (he started yesterday in Germany); he's having Hadrien Feraud on bass; and while I havent found any Euro footage, I found one of Dean's latest gig footage from Baked Potato in LA, and guess what, Feraud is playing Jazz bass... The sound is not really the best, as the input was overloaded, but you can get the idea.. Oh and Had finally started playing root notes.. Thanks Jake, will take your advice, the only problem with shedding both hands at the same time is that Microkorg's keyboard range is pretty narrow, so I can only do two octaves/each hand, not to mention small keys (and they're REALLY small, man..!!) Eh, somehow.... As for previous experience, I've played classical piano for 8 years or something, so I'm quite familiar with this (though I've lost my chops over 5-6 year gap), but those lil' Korg keys are making all the difference.. I have to find some time to start transcribing Justin Timberlake's "Right For Me", which has a wicked synth line. Will post up the dots later on in coming few days time, if anyone's interested in shedding that. PS Oh my,oh my that synth line on Jay-z's tune is out of control, man!!!! Is that you Jake playing your Gaia??)

Bill Evans Trio - Live at Village Vanguard?

Question for you synth players - do you find lots of situations where you have to play parts with two hands, I mean use the left hand too? Or is left hand more 'dedicated' to just switching octaves and messing with pitch most of the times? In other words is it ok to do the shedding on synth with just right hand, or do I want to shed the left hand as well? easy Laimis

Well that's pretty obvious that those top guys have something in common. THough, I think that music-wise all these guys are doing quite different stuff, I mean you cant really compare Janek's music to Had's because it's just different stuff, isn't it. The nearest similarity music-wise I can find is Marien to Grey maybe. I've heard some of stuff of that Eli Marcus' (as a coincidence, my friend studied with him in Berklee, and recorded his album in NYC with Eli's help) and I thought it was pretty killin', I need to check out his album, and maybe buy it. As for Evan's stuff, I could only stand it for like first 30seconds, but that's my problem, not his - he's truly a monster player. As for Dana Hawkins - I've seen him with Gerald Clayton Trio, which was one of the best seen jazz gigs in my life, and that guy can really play jazz, I mean he was killin' with his sense of swing... PS Due to its tricky name and being very far from the stage at that gig, I literally thought that it was a woman playing, not a guy... PPS Feraud doesnt use E-C (to my big surprise, actually, as he's far more a successive soloist, rather than a sideman..) easy guys Laimis

I think it's actually his signature Ken Smith, though it's probably not too much difference between regular Burners. He has another one, up there in the video, which is truly his signature. But then I wouldnt get too hung up on the basses he's playing - its the practice hours that define such chops and fluidity not axes Had's a monster... Enjoy Teen Town, man

But it's the player that plays the darned thing, not the keyboard itself, isn't it I mean, I can't deny the musicality and fluidity of Kern Barntley, for instance - in fact, I'm years behind him with this stuff, which means that the human-factor is still important at this particular genre. I'll check out that Terry Lewis, thanks. And, yes, Phillinganes is one of the leading cats in this sort of thing. Laimis

Having just got my first lil' synth bass keyboard,Microkorg, for doing pop gigs, I've been listening to some Pop/RnB synth bass playing lately, cats like Usher, Mary J Blige, Brian McNight, Jessie J, and I've been really inspired by some of that stuff... What's yours? This guy is a monster, Kern Brantley (Usher, Lady Gaga, Destiny's Child, Ne-yo) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JyuC7-0KEo easy Laimis

Video Killed The Radio - First Few Seconds?
Faithless replied to faceman's topic in Theory and Technique
Yeah sorry, i wrote that in 30 seconds. If you want it with tab, i'd play it like this. The notes in brackets not being played.
Oh crap, that fill seems really complicated...... And, yeah, I'm now getting my coat, easy. Laimis
