Yeah, 'Le Band' is great. I really like Alain's slap playing and tone. It's incredible the way that he can play those complex melodies (like 'Freedom Jazz Dance') with such precision and clarity. I wish I knew how he did it!!
Practice. As for his stuff, ok guys, I'll check "Le Band" (whole album this time) and his new album, but I can't promise anything.. easy Laimis
-
You can't deny his chops and credits, but I was never fan of his playing.
-
I'd also like to check out this guy's work, and so (please don't get me wrong with my question) - is there an album/DVD with him playing something else than cheesy 90's fusion? I've listened to some stuff from 'Le Band" and it just wasnt happening for me.. Maybe I should be looking at later stuff (2000-present , or something like that..) ? easy Laimis
Yep, I had a Roadster with P+J, fretless, bloody heavy. Sold it about a year ago for about £250.
Oh crap, weight is another serious issue for me - are all those Roadster's heavy? How much approximately then? I'll compare that to my ACG's weight, as its not featherlight too (singlecut, though..) easy Laimis
-
I won't probably be going for this, because I'd like different pup combination (I know there are Roadsters with two pups - P + J), although thanks for your input, guys... easy Laimis

It will get your ass kicked for quite some time: http://www.joehubbardbass.com/wp-content/u...er-Exercise.pdf

Sit down, while gigging, and don't lift any serious weight - you're not a solo artist, as I suppose, so there can be someone else in the band to load/unload the gear for a few nights, or if they're still such twats to force you to help with gear, get a friend to sub for you for a pint or something.... You don't wanna do driving too, if you can avoid it. Maybe you can borrow a really lightweight bass from someone or a shop (you're working in one, aint you?) Good luck, mate, Faith
I saw one on gumtree last year for £80,that may have been the bargain of the century for some,if it had been the model with the P pickup i would have had it.I would have thought £150 -250 was more like it.
What's the pickup there then? I havent seen ones like that before.. Does sound more like a P bass or something? I'm looking for something cheap and decent to use on pop gigs, because my ACG is a lil' bit too funky for that sort of thing

Hey peeps, I need advice - I spotted this baby in local music forum up for sale: http://cache0.skelbiu.lt/pictures/muzikos-...je-82166811.jpg Seller asks ~320 pounds for that. Is it worth that? I'm total noob when it comes to gear like that... easy Laimis

John Patitucci "Tone Poem" Transcription
Faithless replied to funkypenguin's topic in Theory and Technique
Penguin, are you writing out the transcription on paper by hand first of all, or straight 'to the computer' (Finale, Sibelius, etc)? The thing why I don't go crazy with ledger lines is just the amount of time it takes to mess with those ledger lines (think, count, write out in a way that's 'readable'), because most of the stuff I write down, I do it by hand first of all, and, to be honest, it's very rare to meet tunes notated that up high - it's way simpler to go to Treble Clef (once again, if you're doing it by hand..) easy Laimis -
Wow congratulations man! When did that happen?
Thanks, mate - well, audition happened in the end of April, I think, but I got the call only in the mid of July (when I broke my arm through over-pracitising... ) - on Monday we pulled TV season opening (and European Basketball Championship too - Great Britain team is playing there too).. You can check it out there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGjdw_2PZ6c You will unlikely see the band (at 3:26 at the best), but we were there.. easy Laimis
What band are you in, tiger?
Me? I'm currently working for country's biggest commercial TV, sitting in its house-band and playing for the biggest pop acts in the country. Anyway, how does your question relate to what I said in my previous post?
Over the past couple of months, I have hardly played bass at home, but I play guitar every day. And when I go to rehearsals as a bassist and play songs we know, and work on new songs, I am a much better bassist. I am more fluid, more imaginative, more dynamic, more expressive and more comfortable. I am also playing more with a pick and right hand damping more. I am a much better player through not playing at home. I am finally happy not being a reader, I got fed up of feeling guilty about it and shed that stupid burden.

I'd go back and read it all again, lah. I don't think you've got what he was saying, at all. "Better" reads a number of ways - either just technically better, as in some improvement in skill; or better in an emotional sense. I have no doubt Nige has come back in the latter space. He knows his limits; he knows what he wants; he's able to compartmentalise that from some of the guff and judgement on here; and yes, I absolutely believe he's better for it
I think that my English is good enough to understand what he's talking about, and while I understand where he's coming from, he also clearly stated that he became better in number of ways (leaving emotional sense and such aside) that are developed through practising your axe by NOT doing it. If you don't know where I'm coming from, please read the article I provided in previous post.
Laimis. A quick question. If I was an up and coming bassist and I said to you, "I love pop and rock music, and I want to play the bass guitar in a rock band, but I don't know where to start, what do I do?" What would you say to me?
Pretty much exactly what Doddy says. Listen, learn, get the band together. What about 'scientific' side of that - scales, theory, etc - if player would really dig what he's doing, he would sooner or later come up with questions, when answers to them would involve all that mentioned stuff.
-
Oh my.. It's just not funny. The thing is - you don't become better at something by not doing it. If you needed a break, and now feel fresh coming back, then that's fine, but stating that you got better is just wrong. Not wrong for you, Sildx, but wrong for those upcoming players who read this and catch on this. I probably wouldnt be arsed to go into this, but stuff like this reminds me of hundreds of young players catching Jaco's quote on "Being able to do it without practising" the wrong way. If there are any upcoming players, who need info on practising and getting better through working, then there is some material for you to check out: http://www.joehubbardbass.com/332/bass-gui...nciples-part-1/ All questions are welcome via PM. If swing, if latin, if RnB and all other forms of music with specific time and phrasing nuances can be taught, how do you explain that funk cannot, excluding 'feel', 'groove', 'time' and other attributes that contribute to every music form anyway, rather than one specific genre (that is pointlessly mistified )? The thing is that listening is a huge part of tuition process itself - music is about listening first of all, so what interests me is why people try to separate listening and tuition, when they're integral parts, no matter how you look at it.

Hit me, if this rendition of Leaves is tired.. Anyway, what's this thing called - errr, changing tempo rapidly back and forth?? Sounds really interesting. Laimis

Well, I'm a bit of W Marsalis follower, speaking about what I take for Jazz and what not. Anyway, my point (to the OP) was that you have to learn to play bop FIRST for two reasons - learning to improvise is the quickest way to become a good player; secondly - knowing the tradition well will help you with your own music (doesnt matter what you're into - modern jazz, funk, latin.. call it what you want) no end, because Jazz is the basis of most contemporary music forms.
-
Well then, who said that you have to go from King Oliver up to Glasper(who do you think he learned from, if not from Herbie, Dizzy and other greats?) to 'get it down'? If we're looking that way, I don't really think one needs to go more than after 1965~ - everything we hear today was already invented by that time.
