Well... If you ask me, I don't think that "Rhythm Changes" is a good tune to kick off with. Why? Because two changes per bar may be a little too confusing at the beginning. And, moreoever, at least in my experience, the most common, if not the only one, version of Changes called is "Oleo", which, most of the times, is called at high tempos, which makes it even worse - lots of changes at a fast tempo.. I think that "Autumn Leaves' is probably the best one to kick it off with. One change per bar (at least in first section), four most common chord qualities (Major, Dominant, minor, half-diminished), and that II V I language, which is foundation of not only jazz, but most modern music. I don't say that those "Rhythm Changes" don't have all that stuff I mentioned, but, to my mind, they're "second level" of common changes.

Last night, during a hang with friends, we've turned on Mezzo TV, and it was no-one else but Roy Hargrove's Big Band feat. Roberta Gambarini @ Vienne Jazz festival... It was killin' by all means - wicked solos, wicked singing from Mrs. Gambarini, wicked arrangements... I don't usually rate bass solos , but Ameen Saleem, who seems to have bass' chair at Roy's band, gave an astounding solo..

Ok, so there's a little video I spotted on Tube: I saw Hadrien doing his thing on this bass at NAMM, but, does this mean he's now a Fodera guy, rather than Ken Smith? For those who don't know, Had got his signature Ken Smith back in 2009.. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=583392 Just googled out this: http://www.fclefbasses.com/Article60.html PS Ooops pooops, that fclef announcement was made back in 2007.. But this Fodera is way better than his KS, IMHO - well, maybe that's because I'm a sucker for single-cut basses myself.. Faith

Thanks for your input, guys, much appreciated.. I think it's sorted right now.. In the line, where I plugged Shuttle's mains lead, there's also connected computers monitor (CRT one) and HP printer. It's the monitor that gave that terrible fart, and printer also 'added' some.. Though, monitor's mains lead is grounded, and, even with monitor turned off, fart was still there. Printer's lead isn't grounded.. I've even managed to lug my laptop, USB card, Shuttle head and bass into bathroom, to plug it into separate line, and DI the amphead, and signal was silent and smooth as a smooth thing.. cheers Laimis

Oh, and I've found an interesting quote in Genz Benz manual: "Don't plug anything but Headphones into Headphone socket"...
-
Well, I don't know if it's actually a hum, or more like loud non-stop fart, if that makes sense.. I think I've tried messing with ground switch on amp, it didn't make difference.. I'll try one more time to be sure..
-
So, I wanted to get Shuttle's signal to my USB Soundcard (Lexicon Lambda). No, matter which amp's output I try, let it be Headphones jack-in output (it's still a 'line out', right..), or Balanced XLR output, when put to Soundcard, there appears a terrible hum in the line. That hum is sort of independant - You can still hear bass signal behind it. The interesting thing is that if I plug actual headphones into Shuttle's Headphone socket, it's all cool - nice sound, no hum or anything... I've plugged varies other pieces of kit into the same USB card, like Line6 processor, Tascam Trainer and have never met such problems.. I'm not much of a tech, but is it something to do with grounding/resistance and Shuttle? any help would be much appreciated Faith

Crap, just checked my Internet speed, and it's indeed low (for abroad connections at least..) But with flights that cheap to London these days, maybe that's would be the way..

I'd really like to go for those Skype lessons, but I think you have to have very fast Internet for smooth going? BTW, for the Miles thing, I think I read it on Banaco's site, that Miles actually asked Stern for Banaco's phone number to get lessons from the man?

I've just finished doing ear training thing using that program Funkle advised. I was in C, guessed only between major scale tones (C excluded) in wide range (a three or so octaves I believe..) and, out of 50 guesses I went for 47 right, which makes it 94% percent accuracy. It was relatively easy, I got to say.. I'll now go for other keys, we'll see if it's cool with those..
-
Ok, its the first evening I sat at the piano for the Banaco thing.. Now, while I wasn't not total deaf with guessing the notes, when I hit some 'awkward' notes (like Db or F#, I was in C tonality..) to the scale, I would instantly loose my tonality (C, that is..) Is this normal for beginner and I should just keep going? The other thing is that I have quite good grasp of piano, and, while I try as much to really hit the random note, I sometimes 'feel', where did the pencil sat on, which makes the game not completely fair, if that makes sense..
-
I was looking after some ear-training material for quite a while now, I definetly will have to give that Banacos exercise a go..
-
Wow, that's a bit of a setlist.. It's no chance I'd transcribe them all in a few weeks, but I could help with some..

I tried a few headphones, both open and closed type, Sennheiser HD465 and Beyerdynamic DTX900, and they all seemed to be uncomfortable after having them on for extended periods of time - ears get hot, and head is getting dizzy.. While open-ear Beyerdynamics were ok, Sennheisers were a total nightmare.. Anyone's know headphones comfortable for really long practice sessions?
-
Ella killin' it.. wait for her battle with horns.. Not actual jazz, but wait for that Eddie Harris solo.. wait for Redman/Marsalis conversation..
-
I see some rather good advice on a rather frequent question - so why not "sticky" this thread?

Yesterday I finally (after 2 week wait) got my Genz Benz Shuttle 310 combo.. I was also looking into Markbass, Ibanez Promethean combos, but Genz Benz won the race by far with its stupidly small weight (8kg when paired with amphead - MB and Ibanez were about 12kgs!). This combo is so small and portable that its just crazy.. Shuttle head fits perfectly into my iGig bag, and it feels like it weighs nothing ! Oh, and not mention that it combo thing is Loud and its sound is crisp and clean.. I'll give some more feedback when I'll get the chance to gig it. Anyway, it is a must to get if you're after a small lightweight and loud combo..
Why bother spending so much cash on a rig just for rehearsal? I use an old British made Trace Elliot Boxer 65, plenty loud enough, lightweight, good range of tones and it only cost me £50. I'd probably gig with it if it had a line out!
How about buying a DI box, mate?
-
While I just got Shuttle combo with Shuttle 3.0 amp, which is amazing by all means, just wanted to check about its bigger brother, Shuttle 6.0 - is the Tube Preamp a real one or more like an imitation of tube, if that makes sense? Judging from ridiculous amps weight, I thought it's just sort of imitation, but I'm not sure, when you're discussing valves here.. easy Faith
I am quite interested on the GSR, but the postage seems mental, not saying thats your fault, but considering its the same price as the bass, its putting my off. Is the price mentioned for postage on the front page a realistic estimate?
It was estimated including a hard-case (which ain't free of course..) as I'm not really up for sending bass 'alone', and some couriers reject to send it not being hard-cased.. Postage to UK should really be about 100 pounds. Laimis -

Well, there were no less than 5 potential buyers in half a year's time (most of them in month's or two time actually..) And as I'm writing this, I have another interest but your thoughts really make sense, so I'm thinking about Ebay thing - 400 isn't really the price I'm looking for this amazing bass.. Why I'm put off eBay is very high taxes for only posting and advert and keeping it.. Not to mention lots of scams.. Thanks for your thoughts once more, cheers Laimis
hi, i think from the amount of bumps and time and sheer lack of interest you can see no one is likely to buy on here. it only seems to be the older ibanez`s that get much interest. the prestige is a fantastic bass and you would probably get more than what you are asking on here from ebay if you give it a go. i tried selling a sr prestige myself here and didnt get a single bite so know the feeling. they are superb basses and worth every penny but i think you are flogging a dead horse on this forum. i kept mine in the end and highly modified so will probably never be able to sell it now but i have a fantastic bass with a neck like no other. i am not poking my nose in to be annoying but think you should give ebay a try as i am quite sure you will have a better chance at selling it. i dont really know why so many people are not keen on ebay? the best way is to put it on a 30 day fixed price sale with a best offer option and not take the chance of getting low bid prices. good luck and have a bump. cheers
-
