I was thinking of attending this event (flying all over from Lithuania), but, Bailey, Sheehan and Hamm? Sorry, those three doesn't grab me at all...
-
Err, well, you're probably right about me going away from playing, but it somehow caught me,sorry.. But, wattabout McLaughin thing, he was fired in a proper sense.. McLaughin complained a lot about his volume on-stage, but it didn't make sense for Hadrien, and Gary Husband was dissapointed about his, let's say, approach to bass playing/comping, saying that Hadrien lacks 'thinking of bass player'.. Something like that, there was a whole thread about that accident on TB, and there are letters from John and Gary, you can google it, if you want..

What are you transcribing at the moment?
To me,learning by ear and transcribing to manuscript are two very different things.
+1... And this is what this thread is about.. Or should I change the name of it to 'What are you writing out to manuscript right now'? -
While I really don't underrate Hadrien and his amazing technique, I have to agree with Doddy - in a long run, I can't listen to him for the same reasons - a great player should have something more to say, than non-stop tirade of notes and symmetrical scales.. And, even more, I've seen him live, but, interestingly, not being a front-man - he was comping for Billy Cobham band - and while he soloed like mad, his 'regular bass' playing, or comping, was far from memorable.. And, if you want to compare him with Janek, well then.. I think their credits/positions in the industry speak for themselves - Janek hits NY, has some major jazz gigs there (Mike Stern, Bob Reynolds, Brecker(?), so on.. ), leads his on band with two very good live records so far (the third, studio one, is coming this year maybe..) does varies studio work, works as an MD for a few pop acts, not forgetting that right now he's doing a major USA tour with VV for the whole year.. And, Hadrien? Ghhhm... I can't tell anything major he does apart his solo stuff, maybe a temporary Chick Korea gig. Billy Cobham gig? I don't know.. Oh, and he was fired from McLaughlin's band, right.

Not writing it out doesn't count as transcribing, bro.. Anyway, I'm thinking of transcribing whole Dynamite - I dig most of the songs on that one.. -
I'd die for seeing him singing along to his lines.. As technical as it is, after hearing cats like Janek, Hadrien's stuff doesn't smell very much music..

Tom and lanark.. If you ever get to transcribe cats like Pino, I advise to you the following (well, some can take it as a bit of 'cheating', but then, go try transcribe Pino, buddies!!!) I use Transcribe program, and, in the Tuning section you can change the tuning in octaves, rather than semitones.. So, hook the recording up one octave (the tuning of song actually will remain the same, dig it?) and you're in bass heaven - 10 times clearer, bass will be 'in your face', vocalists become cats, though When I transcribed Pino, at some places I even needed to hook the recording up two octaves (it's possible to do on Transcribe program..) - Tom, you can try it, you don't need to suffer for the old man's tone.. -

Just finished transcribing Pino's line on John Mayer's 'Good Love is On The Way", from 'Where the Light Is' live recording.. The man is very busy with his playing.. BTW, how does he get away with such a crap tone? He's a nightmare to transcribe properly, very undefined tone (and phrasing?), I had to use all possible tricks I know to bring those notes to the surface.. I'll make an PDF of it, and bring it here.. easy Faith -
saw Miles' "A Different Kind of Blue" on sky arts the other week. spine chilling yet soul healing stuff.
Continuing that, what would be the movies, that every jazz-cat should see? Bilbo?

I'll be definetly taking one of those PS5110's combos, when I get the money together..
Hi F, Usually the chords are just my best guess. The main thing I usually aim to find is what 4-part chord the player is thinking. If you can sing the chord type in your head or out loud and it 'fits' you should be right. I've always played piano as well as bass which helps. Obviously in some music there are more complex chords on top, but from what i've learned from many good gtr and keys players is that it's usually the basic 4part chord they are focused on first before worrying about anything else like 9ths 11ths etc. Gary Willis' book on ear-training is a good starting point for recognising chords by ear too - worth a look if you haven't already. cheers, Johnny
Well, I also play some keys, and yeah, it helps, so I just hook a chord on top and see if it fits.. Basically, all I can 'detect' is if it's major or minor, well, and then I try to add some 9ths or something if chord sounds 'thick'.. But my knowledge (and ear) is waay too poor to properly detect chords.. I was thinking about some ear-training material, so I'll give Willis book a go, although shouts like 'ear training for guitarists/bassists/whatever' puts me off a lil - how can be ear-training different to a bassist or pianist, for example, eh.. cheers, Johnny Faith

Just curious.. Any chance that your arpeggio approach/method has something to do with what Jeff Berlin says about arpeggios?
-
Sorry for the OT, but did it happen from playing bass? Tension and pain in left hand hand is why I gave up using extended position (streching for 5 frets at one time, if that makes sense..) Now I only use 1finger-per-fret, kinda J Gwizdala's approach, and it makes a lot more sense..
-
Nice work, dude.. I've spotted that your work out the harmony within the tune.. Just curious, how did you get it going, I mean, working it out - I suppose, you use piano to determine chords? Why I am asking is that I have no problem transcribing separate parts, but harmony behind notes is sometimes a bit of a mistery to me..

Gotta admit, Garry never got any serious attention from me, but maybe I should give his music a go..
-
Could I suggest using some sort of looper (or something like that..) in your vids, when you're soloing/showing examples? I believe, for a beginner's ear, it is a bit confusing, when he doesn't know, 'where you're at', if that makes sense... Just some food for thought, mate, easy Faith

Can't tell about the hiss, but, ff anyone's after letting that Ibby PS combo go, I'd be tempted to buy it.. really struggling to find a used one.. easy Faith
VV Brown got a load of airplay and publicity this time last year and did some of the Festivals but seems to have disappeared since then.
Dissapppeared? Bro, she's doing a major USA tour from the beginning to the end of this year.. Just look at Janek's schedule in Myspace..
-
Well, while I like her 'behind the beat' thing, which kinda gives that live feeling, her album isn't very strong - there are a few nice tunes, but there's also some weak stuff. But this isn't surprise to me, as she considers herself as a 'songwriter', so maybe it's her 'input', that didn't make the album a top one.. Wattabout VV not being 'massive'.. Well, she's a new artist to the industry, and having a major USA tour isn't too bad for a new artist, is it.. I think, you won't become 'massive' in a moment, it takes time, and a few albums
-
Do you? Here you go.. Well, can't say it sounds worse with P, just different.. Fodera's more defined. And, it seems, that, in Letterman show, Janek needed to count it for those bloody horns, hehe..
-
You probably know this tune, but there's a horn section added and Janek is playing his Fodera, which sounds very nice to my ears.. (he always plays this tune on P bass, but there were issues with delivering backline to that very show..) Check out those nice horn arrangements by Janek, and some real pro playing.. easy Faith
