I'm probably the second mate in this "topic", who accepted for a band, when he didn't even have the bass So, I wasn't serious about the bass at the very beggining, though, I've made a call to "some" bass player-teacher in my music school, who's been playing "jazz", and I've asked to teach me some basic technique things( In fact, when he asked, what I'm gonna play, I said - "Metal!!!", he answered: "Ooh, rock, you say.." - when I remember this now, after playing Amerika's and Teen Town's, I feel sooo embarassed, but we got a good laugh of "those" times with teacher now ). But even when i started to go to the lessons, I still didn't take the thing seriously. One problem was - I didn't have a practice amp, the other - the "playing", that interested me, interested only when playing by teacher's eye.. I took bass more seriously just after picking practice amp, so I'm playing for Real about 8 months. Got a rock/metal band, but I'm not Very satisfied with that whole music, though, it satisfies me enough for now. The problem is, I can't pay a lotta attention to technique things, different styles of music, cuz I got a lot stuff to learn in band.. Well, it's " a lot of stuff with comparison with free-time", of course.. But playing with other people is the Key. You'll simply get a lot things, that will help in future life. Cheers

I got some problems with fingers last winter - I was playing just for few months then, and got blisters on two fingers, and when it mixed up with 'very cold and hot air' thing, my god, those "pumped up" about 1cm... Btw, if it's hard to go with 3finger tech at first, maybe you should go with two for now, as it's your first rehearsal, as I understand, and 3-ger technique should come with time. Though, I don't think it's good think at all, cuz what you can do with three fingers, you can do it on two as well. I've tried 3finger technique, but I've lacked of... um, hand control

Huh, I've started traditionally, from 4string, and few months ago I took 5 string with low B. I don't think, for now, at least, I'll take any "more" strings, due to no need - more work with muting and I've got BIIIG question on myself about slap - do I really need even that 5th string... What about chords and 6ers,7ers and so on's - I don't see direct point on those.
FWIW, I also find it practically impossible to slap on a 5. In fairness, I'm no great shakes on a 4 either, but at least that doesn't have the low B that just keeps rinnging away - just can't damp it properly. Mark
That's the thing that interests me now. I'm slapping on my 5 string, and I'm interested if the B string is really necessary - ringing is "mutable" question, but won't it be a fifth leg for a dog? So how do you do with it, guys?? Use it or mute it? In fact, solution on B still exists - there's sort of "seal" on string, I think, which prevents it from ringing.

Somethin' Wooten said - about traveling, loosing your "way", going through "other ways" and looking for the main, and, OF COURSE, finding it! ( It was about developing your music and technique things). Problem is, he forgot to mention, that sometimes you won't "find" the way.

How much's Ibazy ATK? It ain't expensive, as far as i remember. Last night I've heard a band, whose bassist used that thing( in fact, at the beggining I thought- damn, I see the very first MusicMan in Lithuania but I realised the "truth" after some time) - and that was great! Tone's good, slap's good.

Well, I got SR1005. Sound's good, a lot of variety, Bartie's ok here. Neck's good too. Eq's no good - when i'm switching Treble, sound's gone sometimes( very weak signal, and it comes back to normal after while), and it's about Prestige model.. So, I dunno, what to even think here. All in all, you shouldn't loose, if you'd take, but I'd recommend to think about SR1000 Prestige.

Damn, can't find that sound - Rob Trujillo's solo
He seems a little desperate to show off. The solo is actually rather sloppy, especially considering he even has a beat to play to.
Well, basically solo's good, I think it's one of the best, as many For Whom the Bell Tolls live versions I've heard. Simply, he muffs on the beat when goes to the "upper" section - you'd hear it perfectly if you'd just take down tempo. It was because of "fast drive", you know. And it took a bit to "take" whole solo from record, and now I'm not bad with it, but not that good - first "climbing-up" is hell The only problem left is to find the damn sound. -
Cliff Burton and Jason Newstead used a distortion pedal with a wah pedal after it for that song- sounds like Trujilo's doing the same.
Maybe it looks, but it is not -

Don't put a lot attention to his face - he's all in music Truly, I didn't understand it fully, Ped, but it's clearer a bit, let's say. -
http://youtube.com/watch?v=AetZXksLdJk First 45 seconds of song. What effect could that be? I'll try to go through my GT-6 to find it, then..

Thanks for your kind offer, Dave, but, guys.. I ain't lookin' for Ibanez again. I'm now far more to Fender's side, so could anyone say few words about this thing ?: http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0261000552

It still goes on... So, as I tought it could happen, I've started playing jazz and funk ( rock didn't go anywhere, still got it's band), I'm now thinking of changing instrument - sell Ibanez SR1005, and take more versalite instrument. As I'm looking for 5 string 24 fretted bass, it becomes sort of problem, when looking at Fender's Jazz Basses, buuut, things happen, and they released 2007 model: http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0261000552 It has passive/active switch, Duncan pickups and other interesting things. It looks, this model came for me, but I'm waiting for your opinions, guys, on this thing.
Do your ears ring after loud music - a sort of high pitched tone? It goes away after a while. That is hearing damage and one day it wont go away.
Nah, there's no such effect for me, but my guitarist complained about this... He must have understood it, but I'll remind him.
not so much about whether the boy has the time, more about the dads finances to pay for the lessons & dads time to get him to/from lessons thanks again.
Umm, yep, it came out of my mind... By the way, what "direct" music your boy is interested in, if he is?
The only problem I've found with using any sort of plug now my hearing is damaged, is that when using ER20s, I really do find it hard to hear much at all...
I'm also looking for plugs, because we play quite loud music, due to this I simply over-push strings, herewith damaging my finger technique. I see public likes those ER20s, but I'm interested if I could get "tricks" like this guy's. Simply, I dunno (yet..) if my hearing is damaged too, but due to fact, that I can lift loud, Real loud music with no problems, could this be a sign of it?

Piano's good thing about theory, it also has some similarities with bass ( such as finger development and so on), but why do you reject option - playing piano & bass together? I don't think 10 year-old boy could be that busy ( as I think, I'm busy, so I don't have time to sit by piano... I'm sure I'd need to do it, after playing it for 8 years). Or maybe young boy is too.. umm, young to undertake both instruments seriously, that's a strong option, truly. I don't know other possible options, so, warn me, if I'm wrong. In my case, I'd possibly give him bass to play. Due to distressing myself now, because I didn't start to play it in young days.
-
So, due to putting rock covers aside,we ( Me and drummer) thought of playing some funk. I'm totally New in funk( drummer's also), so question's simple - what songs/exercises/anything else would be useful in starting playing together?
-
When I had my sh*tty Vintage, I used soft bag, but when got my Ibazzy, I don't even think about choosing soft thing again - as someone mentioned - I don't "feel", my lil bass is safe There.. So I use only case now.
-
Huh, that guy is coming in Lithuania in October 21, so I'm gonna see him
-
Check out Rob Trujillo ( Infectious Grooves times...) Great, interesting bass parts.
-
I use Ibanez Soundgear 5 string, and i enjoy it very much. String spacing is ok for fingers, as i play them, though, it's just a matter of time, you'll become familiar with 1-more stringer.

I personally prefer only fingerstyle, because I find it sort of priority with the bass, and some links with Clifford Lee, I think...
Fingers, fingers, fingers, fingers and maybe thumb Has anyone ever seen that year and a half in the life of metallica, they can;t record Jason Newsteads bass properly beacuse of his heavy picking, so they build a wall of foam around his amp in order to try and muffle out some of the pick sound and just get the bass frequencies. How could he have not noticed that before! Thinking about it Billy Gould from Faith No More had a crazy heavy pick sound - but he used it to emulate slapping, which begs the question "why not just slap?"
Dah, that outsider pick's sound still remains and it reaaally sucks, it's especially noticeable in Garage Days and Black Album, isn't it?
