If I could have afforded, in my youth, one I'd have put a trem on my SB Elite. -
When do you open your bass rig museum?
It's just a shame that a few folks (not many mind) can't accept that effects and pedals can be an instrument of their own, that many forms of electronic music are based upon the sounds that these things create.
Very true. I did like your comment about you bass being oscillators and the fx being the rest of a synth. Fantastic way of viewing things! I have a very broad view of musical instruments. To me, if you can get a noise out of it you can use as a musical instrument. I just wish I have the time, and a tad more money, to experiment further.
If only there was an EHX contest like that.. or even better, a Zvex one.. *drool*
EHX one would be awesome!! Zvex I can leave.
I bet that was the guy who won the Boss competition last year. The prize was the entire pedal range.

How do I get JJ's tone on Nice 'n' Sleazy?
bartelby replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
A while back, after many months of arseing around with newer posher gear, I discovered my old rig, a Peavey MkIII Standard and old Laney 4x10, can get pretty close to JJ's sound when I use my Fender P, It can't do much else mind. I was about to get rid of them too... -
Thought I'd bump this to say that ANTA are playing The Croft in Bristol this coming Saturday 28th http://www.the-croft.com/whats-on/eventdetails/28-jan-12-anta-the-croft/ Everyone should get to hear them live!!

I haven't read any of the comments yet. But I can imagine. And as for someone winning 2 TC prizes, all I can say is FIX!! (but no, congrats again. With your board I'd have thought you'd have won all 10!)
-
Buy a drum machine and program them? That way you have full control of them. Plus doing that will almost certainly guarantee a decent and reliable drummer will join the band just after you finish programming the bloody thing (has happened in 2 bands I've been in)!
Wow - I didn't realise I'd won one!!! Cheers for the heads up!! That's the 2nd thin I've won on TC's give away's!
They posted winners on FB and your board was the 3rd on. Unless someone else has a shed load of Moogs and 2 OC-2s... ... now feeling nervous...

Feb/March? Oh good. Chance to raise the funds then...
I am pretty interactive when it comes to my set up. I have the pedals set up in 'defaut' position, which is effectively a position that offers sounds/tones which I love and would be happy treating it at a simple on/off effect like anyone else. A fair portion of my set up stays this way. I'd say 12 units stay like this. Set up for specific parts of tracks or improv. The other 8 however get tweaked an awful lot. Some by expression pedal, some by hand, some by both (at the same time). A number of the pedals I use a lot (Low Pass Filter, Ring Mod, Cluster Flux... In fact all the Moog stuff!) use very different tones for different tracks to I totally reset and tweak while playing between track. This takes some doing and I treat the board as part of the instrument. To me the bass is a set of oscillators and the board is the rest of the synth, so tweaking stuff does not seem a chore, it's part of playing. I try and spend at least one day a week (but generally two) with the set up playing with textures and layers and how things interact with every tiny turn of every knob, so yes, I'd say I interact with it a fair bit. A few Basschatters have seen me use the set up live (Phil.I.Stein, mcgraham, Dan Owens) so they'd be better to ask if the time and effort has paid off...!
Well done on the Polytune Mini!

In an old band we had the guys from Dirty Sanchez, some of Skindred and some of Dub War at various gigs.
Not a cover band, though we are planning on doing a few Depeche Mode covers. I'm singing Gahan's parts and the usual singer is singing Gore's parts and playing synths. I'm covering various synth parts and melodies with my bass. It's quite a cool way of doing things. We don't have enough synths or triggers to play everything like it was (nor do we have access to Depeche Mode's massive bank of sounds and samples) but we're piecing things together. Can't do much today until I've got my Streamer restrung though. The best part is, there is nothing for the drummer to do! He can keep his 'sloppy' human time and we'll rely on the perfection of drum machines!
Sounds interesting. A lot of the DM stuff is written on guitar then reworked into synth parts. Sounds like you're sort of going for somewhere in between their demo and studio versions.

Not using effects suits you, using effects suits others. I find it a little strange people find it strange that some bassists use fxs...

The band is punk-ish. When I'm on my own I'll generally noodle away. If I'm bored I'll play along to TOOL, Rage Against the Machine, Fugazi, Iron Maiden, REM, Nick Cave or whatever else happens to be played when iTunes is on shuffle.

Must see places for musicians visiting UK
bartelby replied to phobucket's topic in General Discussion
Lots of beautiful places in Wales but there's nothing I would say was a musical "must-see", historically or otherwise.
How about the knackered closed up Legendary TJs in Newport! Where Kurt proposed to Cortney... once he'd paid the £5 to get in.. Oh and the Cherub on Newport bridge, as featured on the Stone Roses' Second Coming album cover!
