My outlook on amps has just been thrown in the bin!!
bartelby replied to longtimefred's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've always used pedals to get the sound(s) I want out of mediocre amps. You might tell the difference between your valve rig and a pedal when you're playing alone, but int he context of a band with distorted guitars - who's going to hear those nuances?
As I recently discovered not many people could hear much of my bass, once guitar and drums kicked in, when I used a BDDI. The sound guy who owns the rehearsal room we use was amazed by the sound of my VT2 compared to the Sansamp. -
I was sort of leaning towards the Orange........ I will have to try them both out.
Same here. Narrowed my options down to the Orange Terror bass and the Ampeg. I'm more inclined to get the ampeg as it sounds more versatile. Cheers for the review lozz196

I haven't seen them since the No Prayer For The Dying tour. Saw them on the Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son tours (there's a brief shot of me on the Maiden England video from the Brum NEC ) too. As much as I'd like to see them again, large venues do my head in these days...
Would you be prepared to sell it and, if so, what would you be asking? Regards Pete
Selling is beginning to look like a possibility. oldslapper has first refusal and I've already had another PM about this. I'm going to give it until Wednesday to see if there's any trades. (it's not looking good on that front though) Haven't really decided on a price yet.
I'm not keen on my sr16, the programming steps are very clumsy and although you can set up Lots of drumkits, you can't associate them with specific patterns so you need to manually select the right kit each time.
That's why I program my R-8 and use the SR-16 as a sound module. Not sure what you mean by having to select the kit each time. The preset patterns have fixed drum kits but the user patterns can have any drumkit at all. from the SR-16 Manual: "1. Press the PRESET/USER button to choose the desired bank of Drum Sets. 2. Enter the desired Drum Set number (from 00 to 49) with the number or INC/DEC buttons. With the number buttons, enter a leading zero if necessary. 3. User Patterns will remember the selected Drum Set assignments (Preset Patterns have fixed Drum Set assignments; if you exit from the Preset Pattern, the SR-16 will forget any assignment you made)." But I do agree that programing the SR-16 is pretty tedious.
When researching the painting, it was such an eye opener looking paint types and how they can react with each other if you get it wrong. T
Research? I did buy some spray paint from a specialist company and even their stuff clogged and the flakes were tiny.
<DEEP SIGH> I was thinking the same thing. Shoulda stuck to my guns and done it but I bottled it, thinking it was a bit too tricky to get a large enough flake spray in a can. Hey ho.
I'm currently refinishing an old Dean bass. Hoping for it to be purple sparkle in the end. It's been a bit of a pain in the arse, with the metal flake layer reacting with the base coats. So I have to sand it back a bit and redo the base coats. But I have found out that one of my mates has recently acquired a proper spray booth and a proper metal flake spray gun. He told me to get the bass ready and give him a bell and I can use his stuff to do the flake properly. As I now have access to proper equipment I may sand back to the wood do a decent job.

Very nice. But I still think you shold have gone sparkly...

I'd say round ball park figure would be max £300.
Off the top of my head, just to be a pedant: U-Retro gold - £215 Nordstrand NJ5S pair - £210 Hipshot A style Bridge gold - £110 Hipshot Ultralites - (£27 each) - £135 total - £670
The only pro-level perspex bass I can think of is the Oliver Riedel sig that Sandberg (used to - I think) make. Very cool looking thing, check it out on their website (note it might be in the custom shop section), not a clue on the sound though.
Does the Ampeg Dan Armstrong not count as pro-level?

Although I use a Roland R-8 for sequencing it's midi'd to an Alesis SR-16 for the sounds. You can pick SR-16 for around £50 off ebay or get a SR-18 for about £100.

I need to shift my Ibanez BTB405 as I don't really use it, 4 strings are enough for me. Specs: 35" scale length 18v 3 band EQ with sweepable mind. 18-19 mm string spacing Black transparent finish with quilted maple facing. Despite it's string spacing it's really comfortable to play. The neck is quite a flat profile. The back does have quite a few marks on it (one of the photos shows this) and the bridges have some marks. It would make a great first 5 string for someone. Interested in a sale or a trade for interesting effects pedal. Don't really need another bass though. Cheers for looking

What's your favourite live song/performance?
Red Sparowes -
I've only ever seen 2 bands live where the audience have been silent during the songs. Red Sparowes and Earth. Here's another Red Sparowes performance:
Look mom, no bass.... And with bass, possible the most...ahem...interestingly dressed YouTube bass player ever posted on here. Fur Dixon, I salute you...
How I miss Lux... They were such an amazing band to see live... -
Basically what we have here is a Mark Bass LMII, but yellow and with the words "Combo Head" on it. Same as the LMII it's 300w into 8 Ohm and 500w into 4. It's in good condition, with a few marks (visible on photos), and comes with a padded bag (laptop bag) I'm looking for something similar in output and preferably similar in size. anyone interested? Cheers
And what would a thread about obscure Japanese bands be without the mightily insane Melt-Banana
I love Melt-Banana!! anyone mentioned Boris or Zeni-Geva yet? I saw ruins, but the version with only a drummer, last year in Bristol. Hugely entertining.
Well, that's not very helpful, is it? In fact, it's bordering on being downright rude. Can't we focus on helping each other, please? If I had tabs, chords, sheet music, whatever, for a song requested by a fellow muso, I'd gladly share it.
It reminds of a response I once got back from Alternative Tentacles. Back when I first started to play bass I wrote to them asking if they knew any sources of written basslines for Dead Kennedys songs. The reply was: "If you can't work out DK basslines, then I suggest giving up the bass. Thanks Jello" He did send me a free AT courier bag though...
