I've never really liked Precisions. They just felt too clunky, sloppy and meh!
I've used old and new Fenders and for the last 13 years had an 80s Squire '62 reissue, but I could never get on with any of them.
Until very recently!
Over the years, with the Squire, I've tried changing brands/types of strings, changing the action and such.
Then last week I ordered a set of Steve Harris Rotosounds. Stuck the strings on, reset the action and suddenly the bass was lovely!
There was decent tension on the strings and they rang nicely, without the harsh highs I'd heard for years.
I took it to the first practice of a band I've just joined and was in disbelief at how good it sounded and played!
There are still a couple of issues, like the bridge is knackered (the strings are misaligned) and the pickup is falling apart. But I've decided to invest in a new bridge and pickup next month and see how we go from there.
Of course, I know where this is heading. Despite not liking Precisions I've wanted a Steve Harris sig. bass for a couple of years...
